On this day in 2024: Coat of Hopes to arrive at Bradford Cathedral

Yahoo07-06-2025

On this day in 2024, the Telegraph and Argus reported that a symbol of collective climate hopes was about to arrive in Bradford.
The Coat of Hopes, a patchwork pilgrim coat, was set to arrive on the night of Friday, June 7, 2024 at Bradford Cathedral, as part of its "perpetual pilgrimage" - of which 1,500km had so far been covered at the time of reporting.
The coat, made up of more than 600 blanket patches, began its journey in 2021 with a nine-week journey from the south coast to the gates of COP 26 in Glasgow.
The coat's arrival at Bradford Cathedral coincided with the start of the Tree of Life concert, and the coat was set to be on display for three weeks, as well as to be taken to local schools and community groups.
Barbara Keal, who instigated the coat, said: "The coat's work through this ongoing pilgrimage is to offer everyone the invitation to stop and, in wearing it, focus on the climate and ecological emergency, and our connection to all those others who face it with us.
"The Coat of Hopes carries forward, in its fabric, stories of people and places encountered on its way.
"It will be so good to meet, walk, sing, and sew with the people of West Yorkshire, and take them with us as we continue on our way - walking towards the end of this emergency."
The coat was set to stop next at Haworth Parish Church on June 29, 2024, with members of the public invited to join in the walk from Bradford Cathedral to the next destination.
The Coat of Hopes also has a song, which declares its aims, and which is sung each time a new person wears the coat.

NYT ‘Connections' Hints For Tuesday, June 24: Clues And Answers For Today's Game

Find the links between the words to win today's game of Connections. Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today's Connections hints and answers, here are Monday's: Hey there, Connectors! I hope your week is off to a fantastic start. I feel like you may not quite have enough daily word games in your rotation. So here's another one. It's called Gridogram, and it feels like a cross between Strands and Bracket City (though the creator says it's like Boggle). You have to connect letters on a grid to make words. The idea is to spell out words in a phrase related to that day in history. It might be something that was coined by a person born on that day many years ago, or a line from a famous speech made on that date. Each valid word you find (including those that aren't in the phrase) counts toward a hint. This allows you to guess any letter and if it's in the phrase, it's displayed – a bit like you're playing Wheel of Fortune. Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It's a fun hangout spot, and you're more than welcome to hang out with us. Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don't look at the comments or Twitter much. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes. Today's NYT Connections hints and answers for Tuesday, June 24 are coming right up. How To Play Connections Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT's website or Games app. You're presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part. There's only one solution for each puzzle, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay. Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you're incorrect, you'll lose a life. If you're close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you're one word away from getting it right, but you'll still need to figure out which one to swap. If you make four mistakes, it's game over. Let's make sure that doesn't happen with the help of some hints, and, if you're really struggling, today's Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication's Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed. Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find our hints Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query. What Are Today's Connections Hints? Scroll slowly! Just after the hints for each of today's Connections groups, I'll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words go into them. Today's 16 words are... And the hints for today's Connections groups are: One Word For Each Connections Group Need some extra help? Be warned: we're starting to get into spoiler territory. Let's take a look at one word for each group. Today's Connections word hints are… What Are Today's Connections Groups? Today's Connections groups are... What Are Today's Connections Answers? Spoiler alert! Don't scroll any further down the page until you're ready to find out today's Connections answers. This is your final warning! Today's Connections answers are... I slipped up right out of the gate with agues of SOLID, FIRM, TOUGH and RIGID. STERN was also an option there, and I was one away from a group. Boo. I decided to go elsewhere with what I thought were things you'd see on a movie poster. I was close enough for the blues. PLANE, LINE, POINT and FIRM all seemed like stationary or graph terms. But again, I was one away from a group. Ugh. The greens weren't too difficult though. So I had those taken care of next. After a few moments of chin-scratching, I realized that a SOLID aligned with the rest of the purples, and that would leave the four yellows to go neatly together. So I assembled those groups and claimed my 119th win on the spin. (The purples are out of order. A POINT is an object in a zero-dimensional space, then it goes LINE, PLANE – a completely flat thing, a bit like a sheet of paper – and OBJECT) Here's the grid: 🟪🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟨🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟨🟨🟨🟨 That's all there is to it for today's Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Wednesday's game if you need them. P.S. Today's recommendation isn't a song. Nor is it a movie, game or life suggestion. No, no, no. For what I believe is the first time I've been doing this, it's a book. Hey Kids, Watch This!: 100+ Movie Night Ideas for Every Kind of Kid (and Their Grown Ups, too) is pretty self-explanatory. Published by film distributor A24, it's an illustrated series of suggestions for movies to watch with kids at various ages. The authors chose films that would be relatively easy to find, and includes classics as well as some more titles that aren't as well-known. There are some activities too, including a wordsearch. This isn't an ad or affiliate thing (I'm not even linking to where you can buy it!), just something I picked up as a gift and found to be very cool. It's a great gift for a young (or slightly older) cinephile in your life. Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love! Please follow my blog for more coverage of NYT Connections and other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot! Sharing this column with other people who play Connections would be appreciated too. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes.

Beaches left with 'heartbreaking' amounts of litter after hottest day of the year

The UK's beaches were left covered with 'heartbreaking' levels of litter after thousands flocked to the seaside during the weekend heatwave. The hottest day of the year so far of 33.2C was recorded on Saturday afternoon in Charlwood, Surrey, and those kind of temperatures brought huge numbers to the country's beaches. Sadly, the sheer multitude of visitors brought the problem of littering, with many reports of rubbish strewn across the sands including broken bottles, discarded food, used nappies - and even a child's mattress. One of the worst affected was Brighton beach in East Sussex, where thousands flocked over the weekend. But one resident and litter picker, Sammie Alpin, 33, said she was left "heartbroken" by the rubbish left on the sea front on Saturday. She posted video and images on her @the_plastic_coast Instagram account showing the state of the beach. They showed bins overflowing with rubbish on to the beach and seagulls picking their way through litter and plastic bags. Plastic bottles, drinks cans, rubber dinghies, flip-flops and even an insulin pen were left abandoned along the pebbles. "What are we teaching the kids of today?" asked Alpin, who makes art from beach litter, in her video, saying that she was left "heartbroken and overwhelmed" by the rubbish. "I knew it would be bad today but it's still heartbreaking every time it happens," she said. "Brighton and Hove have hundreds of bins along the seafront, people just can't be bothered to carry back their rubbish." Her video received a number of comments from angry users, with one saying: "I used to think this was down to a lack of awareness, but it's not an excuse any more. "It's a lazy, selfish act of entitlement. People who just assume someone else will sort it out." Another said: "It's quite embarrassing actually, that this is how the British general public act when the sun comes out. "Every summer it gets like this and every summer I question my choice to live in this city." One user said the situation was similar at Bournemouth beach in Dorset. They said: "Same here in Bournemouth... tourists in their thousands come to our beaches and leave a complete mess behind." Pictures from Bournemouth showed rubbish all along the sea front and overflowing bins. Tom Hayes, the MP for Bournemouth East, posted on X: "Absolutely shocking. We all need to take responsibility for our own litter, but that means there should be more bins — and more frequent collections — during busy summer months. Retired Gill Nicholson, 70, said she saw used nappies, broken bottles, rubbish and even an abandoned cot mattress while walking her dog early in the morning near the beach in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. While she said local street cleaners did a good job in cleaning the mess up by the following day, workers nonetheless "have their work cut out". She told Yahoo News UK: "I feel so sorry for the street cleaners. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any enforcement of laws regarding littering throughout the UK. "We live in a wonderful place and we need to protect it." In Wales, visitors to Sandy Bay in Porthcawl on Friday were greeted with lots of litter across the beach, the Valley Times Facebook page reported. On Saturday evening, RNLI Lifeguards Lincolnshire said they were "disappointed" at the litter left on Skegness beach that day, and posted images of the rubbish. In Folkestone, Kent, Facebook user Kathie Peel posted images of litter in the water along the beach. She said: "People who have visited sunny sands today and 'forgotten' to take their rubbish home with them should be ashamed! All along the beach rubbish and dirty nappies in the sea. Absolutely disgusting." Andrea Butcher posted an image on Friday of a rug and other litter left on Formby beach near Liverpool, writing: Free carpet on the beach. I hope today's visitors enjoy sitting in the litter which was left by yesterday's visitors. Perhaps it'll highlight the need to take their rubbish home? Probably not." In March, a report by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) revealed that the amount of plastic rubbish found on UK beaches had increased by 9.5% from 2023 to 2024. It said more than 15,000 volunteers picked up a combine three quarters of a million pieces of litter last year, an average of 170 items per 100m of beach surveyed. It said the most common items were plastic fragments, followed by single-use plastic packaging such as crips packets and sandwich wrappers. The MSC said plastic pollution "remains a huge problem for our marine environment". Plastic items can take hundreds of years to break down and can choke marine animals, with contaminants making wildlife less resilient to the impacts of climate change. The MSC said plastic in the ocean has a "devastating effect" on marine wildlife, as fish, seabirds, sea turtles and mammals can ingest or become entangled in plastic, which causes suffocation, starvation and drowning. It said plastic kills about one million seabirds every year.

'They will never be forgotten': Armed forces flag raised above town hall

The armed forces flag was raised above the town hall to mark the beginning of Armed Forces Week. A short service was held this morning Monday (June 23) in Victoria Square to mark the occasion. Reverend Hannah Lane welcomed the crowd for coming to the short service to mark the start of Armed Forces Week. She said: "During the ceremony, the armed forces flag will be raised above the town hall where it will fly proudly until Saturday evening. "At the same time we will also remember those who have served in the armed services in years gone by with such distinction and sacrifice. "And we will think of our service men and women who are serving now, those currently committed overseas, especially those in active service." The gathered crowd was then invited to take part in a two minute silence to remember all those who have died in service. Bolton Mayor David Chadwick (third from left) said that Bolton takes great pride in the flag.
