Pierce Brown breaks vertebra in violent Tampa crash
Pierce Brown underwent surgery Sunday to repair a broken vertebra suffered in a Lap 6 crash in the Monster Energy 250 East Supercross opener. The timeline for his return has not yet been determined.
'I felt great all night leading my heat and main,' Brown posted on social media. 'Halfway through the main I crashed in the whoops. Unfortunately I broke my T5 vertebrae. I had surgery today to get it fixed so that I could get back to racing. I want to thank all my family, friends, fans, and Star Racing Yamaha for all the support. I will keep you guys updated on my recovery.'
Brown earned the holeshot and was leading the race over his teammate Max Anstie at the time of his accident.
Brown was considered one of the favorites to contend for the 250 East championship after scoring his first 250 win last year in the SuperMotocross World Championship finale. He moved from the independent Troy Lee Designs team to Star Racing during the offseason and this was expected to be his best chance at challenging for the title. Brown finished third in the 2022 250 East standings and was third last year in SuperMotocross points.

Sulphur's Jake Brown has gone from cheering for LSU to helping the Tigers chase down an eighth College World Series championship in Omaha, Neb. The sophomore, who leads LSU in hittin in the CWS, has played his role as a dependable pinch hitter or starting outfielder. (Mitchell Scaglione / Special to the American Press) OMAHA, Neb. — Sulphur's Jake Brown is LSU's leading hitter in the College World Series. The sophomore might start in right field tonight when the Tigers open the best-of-three championship series against Coastal Carolina. Doesn't really matter. The start will go to either him or Josh Pearson, a fifth-year senior, good friend and the guy he most looks up to on the team. Regardless, Brown knows at some point he'll be called on. It's more than possible — it's almost inevitable. And chances are he'll make the most of his opportunities. 'Coaches do a good job,' Brown said of games he doesn't start. 'Stay ready, knowing the second my name is called, it will be an opportunity to help my team win.' He went in as a pinch hitter (and was hit by a pitch) in LSU's opener against Arkansas. He started the two-day adventure against UCLA and went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run. But his finest moment probably came in the wild Arkansas game when it was his two-run, pinch-hit double that got the Tigers' offense going in the sixth inning. A .335 hitter for the season, he's 4-for-6 (.750) in Omaha, has reached base in six of eight plate appearances, with four RBIs. LSU head coach Jay Johnson said he doesn't consider it a platoon with Pearson, but you can only play three outfielders. Both are left-handed hitters, so that's not a factor. Brown has more starts, 44 to 39, and some of Pearson's have been in left field. 'It's literally been game by game,' Johnson said, adding that it's nice to know both will be available. Pearson was a key factor in LSU's 2023 CWS title, when Brown was winning Louisiana Mr. Baseball honors at Sulphur High. 'And Jake, in my opinion, is one of the best players on our team,' Johnson said. 'One of the main reasons we are here in this position.' Brown is also known as one of teh most confident players on the team, a key factor when looking for a pinch hitter on days he doesn't start. 'It was time to use him,' Johnson said of inserting Brown with the bases loaded in that sixth inning against Arkansas. 'We needed to score right there.' Actually, he stepped in for center fielder Chris Stanfield. One way or another, Brown is living large in Omaha, fulfilling the dream that began in his Sulphur backyard. 'Nobody dreams about playing in an empty ballpark,' Brown said. 'When you're taking swings in the backyard…you're dreaming about playing in the biggest spotlight.' It doesn't hurt that he is a lifelong LSU baseball fan who grew up watching the Tigers and was in Omaha as a spectator for the 2023 championship. 'I remember being a little kid coming to the games and watching on TV,' he said. 'Those guys were like superheroes to me growing up.' Now he's on the other side. It's why he loves tossing balls into the stands, mingling with kids at the ballpark. 'I was in those shoes before,' he said. 'I know what it is like to be a little kid and a fan of the LSU Tigers.'

Rookie OT Aireontae Ersery compared to former Texans Pro Bowl star
Houston Texans rookie offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery could be the next breakout star in the AFC South. He'll need to be one of the better linemen in H-Town if the Texans plan on competing for a Super Bowl title this fall behind Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud. The second-round pick was drafted higher than any offensive tackle since 2019, when the Texans used a first-round pick on Tytus Howard. Houston liked him so much that there were rumors that the Texans were willing to move up into the top 40 to select him right after Jayden Higgins. FOX Sports NFL Draft analyst Rob Rang compared the Minnesota All-American to another great Texans offensive tackle who became a Pro Bowl talent, and it's not Laremy Tunsil. Instead, Ersey could be the next Duane Brown. "In the 23-year history of the Houston Texans, Brown is the only offensive tackle selected by the club to ever make a Pro Bowl," Rang wrote. "I'm dating myself with this evaluation, but I remember Brown as a highly athletic but very raw blocker and a surprising first-round selection out of Virginia Tech. Ersery slipped to the second round but offers a similar blend of size and agility. I think he's going to become a rock up front for Houston. " Brown, a first-round pick out of Virginia Tech, was considered the top offensive tackle for several seasons during his prime with the Texans. He carried on that success when traded to the Seattle Seahawks, earning an All-Pro nod in 2018. The hope for Houston is that the rookie can be the best of both worlds as a great pass protector and run blocker for the Texans. The team had a Pro Bowl talent on the blind side for six years with Tunsil, and Ersey could carry on his own path as the franchise's longtime homegrown talent at left tackle in H-Town.
