DARYL WARD, PH.D., NAMED INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ASHLEY GIBSON BARNETT MUSEUM OF ART
LAKELAND, Fla., June 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art (The AGB) at Florida Southern College is pleased to announce the appointment of Daryl Ward, Ph.D., as interim executive director, effective Thursday, June 26.
A respected leader in the regional arts community, Ward brings decades of experience in education, nonprofit leadership, and arts advocacy to this transitional role. Ward will continue to serve as executive director of the Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance (PACA) — a position he has held for just over three years — while assuming interim oversight of The AGB.
'Dr. Ward's collaborative leadership and deep ties to the cultural fabric of Polk County make him an ideal steward for the Museum during this time,' said Dr. Jeremy Martin, president of Florida Southern College. 'We're grateful to Daryl for his willingness and PACA for its partnership as we continue to advance the Museum, the College and the arts in Lakeland, Polk County and beyond.'
Ward's appointment comes at a time of strong momentum for The AGB, following the successful opening of its expansion and the debut of the current Frank Lloyd Wright & the College of Tomorrow exhibition. The Museum continues to offer a robust slate of youth and adult programming and is actively preparing for an exciting lineup of exhibitions in 2026 and beyond. Among these is LIFE: Six Women Photographers, which will spotlight the work of six pioneering women who contributed to LIFE Magazine between the 1930s and 1970s, capturing powerful stories that shaped the cultural and political landscape of the 20th century.
'The work that Dr. Kerr and Dr. Rich have done to elevate the status and significance of The AGB is extraordinary. I'm grateful to be able to contribute even a small amount to the legacy of this amazing art institution,' said Ward.
This shared-leadership arrangement allows Ward to continue directing PACA's current initiatives — the ACI grants, the arts and culture economic impact study, the Art in Public Spaces program and the annual Hall of Fame Gala, scheduled for Oct. 14 — while also guiding The AGB through its leadership transition. During this time, he will maintain strategic leadership of PACA, with daily operations delegated to the organization's newly hired Arts Program and Marketing Coordinator.
'Dr. Ward is not only a champion of our local art organizations and artists through his leadership of PACA, but he is also dedicated to promoting the extraordinary value the arts contribute to our economy, our education system and our quality of life in Polk County. The AGB will continue to thrive as our premier arts institution under his interim leadership,' said Sara Roberts McCarley, PACA board member and Lakeland City Commissioner.
Ward began his career in public education, working for 32 years in Polk County Public Schools, including seven years as principal of Harrison School for the Arts. After retiring in 2020, he held a brief post at Southeastern University before stepping into the executive director position at PACA. He also serves as an adjunct professor in the education department at Florida Southern College and is an accomplished photographer.
'I'm humbled that Dr. Martin and The AGB board of trustees would consider me to assist them during this transitional phase. I'm grateful for the relationship between PACA and The AGB, and I believe this arrangement — albeit temporary — will strengthen that relationship. I also appreciate the support of the PACA board of directors for recognizing the importance of collaborating with our local arts and culture institutions,' Ward added.
A national search for The AGB's next permanent executive director will begin this summer.

Bob Myers shattered Stephen A. Smith's tiresome gimmick before Game 7
It's been a rough NBA Finals when it comes to whatever smoldering mess is now left of Stephen A. Smith's reputation. First, Smith was caught playing Solitaire during the pivotal fourth quarter of the Oklahoma City Thunder's win in Game 4. Smith responded to the controversy by laughing it off and saying he's capable of multitasking while still watching games he's ostensibly paid to pay attention to for ESPN. That, of course, was an obvious lie. Advertisement HE CAN'T HELP HIMSELF: Ja Morant ripped Stephen A. Smith's tasteless comments about Memphis With only the fourth NBA Finals Game 7 this century on tap for Sunday night, hoops fans were begging the famously brash and loud Smith to do a more responsible job of setting the stage for what should hopefully be an epic evening in Oklahoma City. They wanted him to respect the magnitude of the game more, rather than making his coverage as part of ESPN's in-game studio panel all about himself, like he always does. Unsurprisingly, Smith did not oblige. Early on ESPN's broadcast, what should've been a simple conversation about an over/under for Chet Holmgren's final Game 7 point total devolved into Smith totally veering off track so he could yell about his frustrations with Kendrick Perkins' analysis (which is normally a fair criticism, to be clear). That's right, dearest readers. Smith turned pregame coverage of a potentially legendary Game 7 into a manufactured First Take debate segment. His shamelessness boggles the mind. Advertisement During Smith's aimless (and needless) rant, you could actually see former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers growing frustrated when the camera panned over to his face. And after Smith finished bloviating about nothing, Myers said what we've been thinking about him for quite some time. You don't have to yell to make your points. You just don't: If ESPN has any self-respect about its live NBA coverage remaining, it's clear that this studio show needs to be blown up before the next NBA season begins. I'm talking torn down to the studs. I'll hold off on salting the earth because I think it could still be redeemed with enough earnest effort and creativity. Advertisement Anything else, and we risk further exposing ourselves to the Stephen A. Smith Show, er, I mean, the winner-take-all championship game. (Photo by Cris Esqueda/) Gilberto Ramirez (47-1 with 30 knockouts) opened his professional boxing career on a 44-0 run, going undefeated between 2009 and May 2022. He held the WBO super middleweight title between April 2016 and December 2018, defending the belt five times before moving up to light heavyweight in 2019. Ramirez won his first five fights at light heavyweight by knockout, earning him a shot at Dmitry Bivol and his WBA light heavyweight belt. Bivol bested Ramirez in that 2022 contest, winning via unanimous decision. Ramirez bounced back from that loss with three unanimous decision wins. In the seconds of those contests he bested Arsen Goulamirian for the WBA cruiserweight title, In his most recent outing he defeated Chris Billam-Smith to add the WBO cruiserweight belt to his collection. Yuniel Dorticos (27-2 with 25 KOs) also turned pro in 2009. He too began his career with an impressive unbeaten streak, going 22-0 between his debut and February 2018. During that run, Dorticos won the vacant WBO interim cruiserweight belt in 2016 with a TKO of Youri Kayembre. Later elevated to full champion status Dorticos defended that belt with a KO of Dmitry Kudryashov. He surrendered that title to Murat Gassiev in his next outing, losing by TKO in the 12th round. Dorticos later won the IBF cruiserweight belt, beating Andrew Tabiti for the vacant strap in 2019. He lost the title in his first defense, dropping a majority decision to Mairis Briedis in 2020. Since losing the IBF strap, Dorticos is 3-0 with three knockouts, most recently stopping Alan Campa in the first round of their June 2024 scrap. ESPN has Ramirez ranked as the No. 2 cruiserweight behind IBF champion Jai Opetaia. Dorticos is the No.1 ranked cruiserweight according to the WBA. The WBO has him at No. 9.
