IIT death: Cops summon boy's friend in suicide probe
Kolkata / Kharagpur: The police from Kharagpur Town Station have summoned the girl from Delhi, with whom third-year civil engineering student Mohammed Asif Qamar was on a video call moments before his death, for questioning.
The 22-year-old student was found hanging in his room in the Madan Mohan Malaviya (MMM) Hall on May 4.
"Since the girl has exams till the third week of June, she will be coming in the month-end," a police officer said.
The girl had reportedly informed the IIT security officer about Qamar's drastic step and after he killed himself while on video call. The security officer got scared and asked about her location, to which she reportedly said that she was in Delhi and Qamar was on the ground floor of the MMM Hall.
Qamar's death was the second in a fortnight after the death of fourth-year ocean engineering and naval architecture student Aniket Walkar on April 20. Aniket's brother, Sudeep Walkar, came down to Kharagpur and met the police officers on Friday. "There has been no progress in the case. The cops asked me about his academic record and if I suspected anyone. The cops have not been able to talk to any of his friends as the students are on summer vacation.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The anti-narcotics squad of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city police intercepted two mini trucks on Saturday carrying suspicious powder concealed within plastic scrap obtained from a pharmaceutical company by a scrap vendor. Police commissioner Pravin Pawar said, "The presence of white powder and small granule-like substances randomly placed in carry bags and stashed in plastic drums has heightened suspicions." Police officers said that no chemical, in any form, can leave the pharmaceutical company without prior clearance from the appropriate channels. Police authorities reported that the intercepted vehicles had left a global generic and speciality pharmaceutical company's manufacturing unit in the MIDC Waluj area. Anti-narcotics squad inspector Geeta Bagwade stated, "There were indications of smuggling and transporting suspicious drug-like substances from a pharmaceutical company located in the MIDC Waluj area. Accordingly, our teams set up a trap and seized the two mini trucks." The officer said the driver failed to provide details or satisfactory answers regarding the powder. Two Uzbek women arrestedfor illegal stay in Golf City
Lucknow: Two women from Uzbekistan were found residing illegally in a rented flat in Lucknow's posh Golf City area without valid visa or passport, triggering a multi-agency investigation into suspected human trafficking and tampering of identity through plastic surgery. Lodging an FIR, sub-inspector at Sushant Golf City police station Mahesh Kumar Singh said that acting on a confidential tip-off, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) conducted a raid in a flat where two Uzbek women were found living since June 18 without informing the local authorities or the police. "The women claimed that they lost their travel documents two years ago. However, they failed to produce the copy of the police complaint regarding the loss of documents," Singh said in the FIR. Upon further interrogation, the women disclosed that they came to India with the help of a woman, Lola Kayumova, who was reportedly residing in India for a long time. They claimed that Kayumova introduced them to a plastic surgeon who runs clinics in Patrakarpuram and Ahimamau areas of the city. Deputy commissioner of police, south zone, Nipun Agarwal, said that more evidence was being collected and other associates of the accused were under scrutiny. "We are also looking into the possibility of a wider trafficking network," Agarwal said. He added that the accused have been booked under sections 318(4) (cheating), and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Section 5 of the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939, Section 14A and 7(1) of the Foreigners Act, 1946, and under relevant sections of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. "Probe is being conducted into the role of the plastic surgeon and Arjun Rana," the DCP said, adding that the foreign nationals would be deported to their country after the investigation.
