Advertisement 'In 2024, bilateral trade hit a record USD 212.04 billion, with Malaysia's commodity exports to China exceeding RM20 billion, half of it from palm oil. Chinese tourist arrivals are also expected to double to 3.8 million, showing deepening people-to-people links. 'With strong leadership and continued collaboration, I am confident Malaysia-China ties, especially in Sabah, will grow stronger in the years ahead,' he said. Chan made the remarks during the 13th anniversary celebration and new office launch of the Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah (MCFAS) on Monday which was officiated by Head of State Tun Musa Aman. Chan said since 2012, the MCFAS had been vital in strengthening ties between the nations through trade, education and culture. 'Your efforts, especially under the Belt and Road Initiative, have brought meaningful economic benefits to Sabah in investment, tourism and agri-tech,' he said. Its President, Dr Oh Ei Sun meanwhile praised Tun Musa who encouraged the association to formalise efforts in 2012 after aiding with Chinese VVIP arrivals. 'Thirteen years later, we are deeply honoured to have Tun with us again, symbolising a new chapter in our journey. 'Today's launch of our new office is not just a physical upgrade, it marks a renewed commitment to expanding our role in Malaysia-China cooperation, especially in Sabah. Moving forward, we aim to strengthen ties with counterparts in China, promote youth and cultural exchanges, and transform our premises into a vibrant hub for collaboration,' he said. Dr Oh also announced the formation of the Borneo Alliance with Brunei, Sarawak and Kalimantan to deepen regional cooperation with China. US may target Samsung, Hynix, TSMC operations in China, sources say

WASHINGTON, June 21 — The US Department of Commerce is considering revoking authorisations granted in recent years to global chipmakers Samsung, SK Hynix and TSMC, making it more difficult for them to receive US goods and technology at their plants in China, according to people familiar with the matter. The chances of the United States withdrawing the authorisations are unclear. But with such a move, it would be harder for foreign chipmakers to operate in China, where they produce semiconductors used in a wide range of industries. A White House official said the United States was 'just laying the groundwork' in case the truce reached between the two countries fell apart. But the official expressed confidence that the trade agreement would go forward and that rare earths would flow from China, as agreed. 'There is currently no intention of deploying this tactic,' the official said. 'It's another tool we want in our toolbox in case either this agreement falls through or any other catalyst throws a wrench in bilateral relations.' Shares of US chip equipment makers that supply plants in China fell when the Wall Street Journal first reported the news earlier yesterday. KLA Corp dropped 2.4 per cent, Lam Research fell 1.9 per cent and Applied Materials sank 2 per cent. Shares of Micron, a major competitor to Samsung and SK Hynix in the memory chip sector, rose 1.5 per cent. A TSMC spokesman declined comment. Samsung and Hynix did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Lam Research, KLA and Applied Materials did not immediately respond, either. In October 2022, after the United States placed sweeping restrictions on US chipmaking equipment to China, it gave foreign manufacturers like Samsung and Hynix letters authorising them to receive goods. In 2023 and 2024, the companies received what is known as Validated End User status in order to continue the trade. A company with VEU status is able to receive designated goods from a US company without the supplier obtaining multiple export licenses to ship to them. VEU status enables entities to receive US-controlled products and technologies 'more easily, quickly and reliably,' as the Commerce Department website puts it. The VEU authorisations come with conditions, a person familiar with the matter said, including prohibitions on certain equipment and reporting requirements. 'Chipmakers will still be able to operate in China,' a Commerce Department spokesperson said in a statement when asked about the possible revocations. 'The new enforcement mechanisms on chips mirror licensing requirements that apply to other semiconductor companies that export to China and ensure the United States has an equal and reciprocal process.' Industry sources said that if it became more difficult for US semiconductor equipment companies to ship to foreign multinationals, it would only help domestic Chinese competitors. Anwar honours outgoing IGP and RMAF chief in farewell meetings

KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his appreciation to former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain for his service, contributions, and leadership during his tenure heading the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). In a Facebook post today, Anwar stated that he conveyed this during a farewell courtesy call from Razarudin this morning. 'I pray that Tan Sri Razarudin continues to be blessed with good health and the strength to continue contributing to the nation in any capacity. Thank you for your very meaningful service to the people and the country,' he said. Razarudin, who joined PDRM in 1982, was appointed as the 14th IGP for a two-year contract after his retirement, effective June 23, 2023, and will conclude his service this Sunday. Throughout his career, Razarudin held several important positions, including Head of Penang Criminal Investigation Department in 2016, Deputy Commissioner of Sabah Police (2016), Deputy Chief Police Officer of Perak (2018), Chief Police Officer of Perak (2019), Director of Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (2020), and Deputy Inspector-General of Police (2021). Earlier, Bukit Aman Special Branch Director Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail was appointed as the 15th IGP, replacing Razarudin, effective today. Meanwhile, in a separate post, Anwar also stated that he had received a farewell courtesy call from the Chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), General Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan, who will retire on June 26. 'My highest appreciation for all his sacrifices, services, and excellent leadership in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM). I pray that Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan will be blessed with prolonged good health and that the spirit of patriotism he displayed throughout his service will inspire the next generation to continue serving and defending our beloved homeland,' he said. Mohd Asghar Khan, who was appointed as the RMAF Chief on March 7, 2022, began his career in the Malaysian Armed Forces on July 18, 1983, as a cadet officer at the Royal Military College and started his career as an RMAF fighter pilot in 1985. Tesla to build first grid-scale power plant in China

NEW YORK: Tesla announced Friday that it signed an agreement to build its first grid-scale energy storage power station project in mainland China. The project will help with the flexible adjustment of grid resources, and 'effectively solve pressures relating to urban power supply,' Tesla said in a post to the Chinese social media platform Weibo. 'After completion, this project is expected to become the largest grid-side energy storage project in China,' Tesla added. Such energy storage systems help to enhance stability in the electricity grid at a time when there are greater supplies of solar and wind power. Chinese media outlet Yicai reported that Tesla Shanghai, Shanghai authorities and China Kangfu International Leasing Co. held a signing ceremony Friday for the project. It added that the deal involved investments of 4 billion yuan ($560 million). The contract comes at a moment of tension between Washington and Beijing, with the two sides yet to hash out a long-term trade agreement following tariffs announced by President Donald Trump. China and the United States negotiated a 'framework' agreement in London earlier this month following two days of marathon talks.
