Baruipur police dismiss Suvendu Adhikari's claim of ‘suspicious' device installation by alleged Kashmiris

The Hindu24-04-2025

Kolkata
The Baruipur police on Thursday (April 24, 2025) refuted allegations made by Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, regarding the presence of two alleged Kashmiri men in the Baruipur area and the installation of what he described as a 'high-performance wireless network bridge' on the rooftop of their residence.
Mr. Adhikari, in a social media post earlier in the day, claimed that the individuals had installed a NanoBeam 2AC device, a compact wireless bridge used for long-distance internet connectivity. He also shared their residential address and expressed concerns over the device, suggesting it could be of suspicious nature.
Mr. Palash Chandra Dhali (IPS); Superintendent Of Police; Baruipur Police District, firstly I appreciate that you were prompt enough to respond after my X Post regarding two individuals staying at Baruipur.
I listened to the Press Conference where you were providing updates… https://t.co/rtsfiOcztLpic.twitter.com/R85REHoN0U — Suvendu Adhikari (@SuvenduWB) April 24, 2025
The police, following verification, stated that the individuals in question were not from Jammu and Kashmir but from Madhya Pradesh and had been residing in a rented accommodation in Baruipur for the past year. The device in question, officials said, was a standard JioFiber internet router and no suspicious materials or activities were found during inspection.
'It is unfortunate that certain individuals choose to disseminate inaccurate and potentially inciteful information via social media, instead of alerting appropriate State or Central agencies,' the Baruipur police said in a statement posted online. The statement further urged citizens not to share unverified information on social media and warned that 'public insinuation against any individual without verifying the facts is legally punishable.'
Speaking to the media, Palash Chandra Dhali, Superintendent of Police, Baruipur, said that both individuals had come to Kolkata around a year ago. 'One is a civil engineer and the other a computer engineer. They are in the city to start a business. The device they installed was solely for internet access,' Mr. Dhali said.
The development comes at a time when several incidents of alleged harassment and targeting of Kashmiri residents have been reported across different parts of the country, following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22 that claimed the lives of over 26 tourists, including three from West Bengal.
Later in the day, Mr. Adhikari issued a counter-response on social media, stating that if the police were confident about the individuals' identities and intentions, their details should be made public. 'Since you are willing to give a clean chit to them, why didn't you make them attend the press conference and reveal their identities so that the public would be assured and suspicions could be laid to rest?' he wrote.
The police have not responded further to Mr. Adhikari's remarks at the time of publication.

All three Pahalgam attackers from Pakistan are different from those whose sketches were released initially by J&K Police, finds NIA probe

The arrest of two Kashmiri locals for allegedly harbouring terrorists who carried out the April 22 Pahalgam attack has led the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to conclude that all three attackers were from Pakistan. According to the agency, the terrorists visited the homes of Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar from Batkote, Pahalgam, and Bashir Ahmad Jothar from Hill Park, Pahalgam, and took food from them. 'During questioning, they have disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack, and have also confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated to the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba,' a NIA spokesperson said. The breakthrough is a departure from what was previously believed about the identities of the attackers. Two days after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, the Jammu and Kashmir police had released three sketches – Pakistan nationals Hashim Musa and Ali Bhai alias Talha, and Kashmir local Adil Hussain Thoker. NIA sources now say the three men in the sketches are not the Pahalgam attackers. Sources said one of the attackers is believed to be Suleiman Shah, who was involved in the killing of seven employees of a firm constructing the Z-Morh tunnel on the Srinagar-Sonamarg highway on October 20 last year. His co-accused from the attack, Junaid Ramzan Bhat, was killed on December 4 in a gunfight with the J&K police. From his phone, police had recovered a photo of Junaid along with three other militants. This photo went viral after the April 22 Pahalgam attack and, sources said, was used by the J&K as the basis for the sketches. During the investigation, the central agencies and the NIA showed different pictures recovered from Junaid's phone to the two arrested locals, who recognised the men who had visited them two days before the Pahalgam attack. 'The fresh pictures were also shown to several witnesses, and they too confirmed their presence at the crime scene. All three are Pakistani nationals, including the Z-Morh terror accused Suleman Shah,' said a source. 'Central agencies and the NIA are revisiting past cases and trying to tally ballistic reports so a strong case can be built against these attackers,' the source said. Investigators are also looking into whether Suleman was involved in the killing of three Army personnel in South Kashmir's Kulgam district in August 2023, and in another attack in Jammu's Poonch district in May last year, wherein an Air Force personnel was killed and four others injured. Before the NIA arrested the two locals for allegedly sheltering the attackers, the agency had questioned more than 200 people, including pony operators, shopkeepers and photographers. 'Parvaiz had a common friend with a pony operator, and their wives shared details of the visitor at their house,' said a source. The NIA believes the three attackers came to their homes late evening on April 20 and asked them to pack food. Before leaving, they gave them some money and threatened them not to tell anyone. 'As per the probe, Parvaiz and Bashir knowingly harboured the three armed terrorists at a seasonal dhok (hut) at Hill Park before the attack,' the spokesperson said, 'The two men had provided food, shelter and logistical support to the terrorists.' The two have been arrested under section 19 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

311 more Indian nationals return home, 1428 evacuated from war-hit Iran so far

The Indian government continues to bring back Indian nationals, including students stranded in the war-torn Iran, under the Operation Sindhu. The latest batch of 311 Indians arrived in the national capital via a special flight from Mashhad, even as the tensions escalated to a new high in the Middle East region following the bombing of key Iranian nuclear facilities by the US bomber planes. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal took to X on Sunday to share an update on India's evacuation drive from Iran under the Operation Sindhu, and also gave exact numbers of evacuees from the war-hit zone. 'Operation Sindhu continues. 311 Indian nationals arrived in New Delhi on a special flight from Mashhad at 16:30 hrs on 22nd June. 1428 Indian nationals have now been evacuated from Iran,' said Randhir Jaiswal, official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, in a tweet. Kashmiri students comprise a large portion of the contingent, being evacuated from the Gulf state. J&K Students Association also thanked the government for the sustained evacuation drive from the conflict-torn zone. 'The Mahan Air flight (W50071A) from Mashhad, Iran, carrying over 280 Indian students, including 200+ from Kashmir, has safely landed in Delhi. A moment of immense relief and joy for families who waited with anxious hearts,' said the J&K Students Association on X. It further said, 'We thank the Ministry of External Affairs, Government authorities and all those officials engaged in the operation for their swift response, tireless coordination, and support in ensuring the safe evacuation of our students from Mashhad, Iran. Your efforts brought our students home.' Meanwhile, the Indian government has taken up the task of evacuating the Nepalese and Sri Lankan nationals from the Gulf nation, being hit by Israeli and US strikes. The Embassy of India in Tehran announced on Saturday that citizens of Sri Lanka and Nepal would be evacuated by the Government of India, as per the requests from respective governments.

Major Breakthrough In Pahalgam Case, 2 Arrested For Sheltering Pak Terrorists

The three terrorists involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which left 26 innocent people dead, are Pakistani nationals and are affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has found. Announcing a big breakthrough in its probe into the heinous attack, the anti-terror agency has said it has arrested two men for harbouring the terrorists who carried out the attack at Pahalgam's Baisaran Valley, also known as 'Mini Switzerland'. "The two men - Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar from Batkote, Pahalgam and Bashir Ahmad Jothar of Hill Park, Pahalgam - have disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack, and have also confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated to the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)," the NIA said in a statement. "Parvaiz and Bashir had knowingly harboured the three armed terrorists at a seasonal dhok (hut) at Hill Park before the attack, as per NIA investigations. The two men had provided food, shelter and logistical support to the terrorists, who had, on the fateful afternoon, selectively killed the tourists on the basis of their religious identity, making it one of the most gruesome terrorist attacks ever," it added. The two accused have been arrested under Section 19 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which relates to punishment for harboring a terrorist. The NIA has said further investigation into the case is on. In an attack that shocked the nation, armed terrorists shot dead 25 tourists and a Kashmiri pony ride operator in cold blood at Pahalgam's Baisaran Valley. According to eyewitnesses and the victims' family members, the killers asked their religion before shooting them at close range. The Pahalgam attack, which crossed several red lines, sparked nationwide outrage. A fortnight later, India launched Operation Sindoor to avenge the killings and targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. New Delhi clarified that it had targeted only terror bases. Pakistan, however, responded by firing a barrage of missiles and drones along India's western border. India's robust air defence neutralised most of these projectiles, although heavy shelling on the border and Line of Control led to loss of lives. India then struck key military installations in Pakistan, including multiple air bases, forcing Islamabad to seek a ceasefire. New Delhi has warned that any future attack will invite a crushing response.
