11,400 induction cooktops distributed to Anganwadi centres in AP

Vijayawada, June 5 (UNI) The Government of Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture under the Ministry of Power, on the special occasion of World Environment Day, initiated the distribution of 11,400 induction cooktops and stainless-steel utensil sets to Anganwadi centres across the state.
The distribution of the cooktops was done under Phase-I of the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP).
This effort is part of a larger rollout targeting all 55,607 operational Anganwadi Centres in the state.
The distribution drive will be rolled out, covering all 26 districts of the state. The event was graced by Gummidi Sandhya Rani Minister of Women and Child Welfare, Kesineni Chinni, MP, Gadde Rama Mohan Rao, MLA.
Launched nationally on November 2, 2023, under the Ministry of Power's 'Go Electric' campaign, the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP) aims to promote the widespread adoption of energy-efficient electric cooking appliances across India with the guidance from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). The Andhra Pradesh rollout was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal on December 7, 2024.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani said: "The distribution of induction cooktops is a commendable step forward in our collective commitment to cleaner energy and improved community health. Initiatives like the National Efficient Cooking Programme empower our Anganwadi workers, foster sustainable habits, and significantly reduce health risks associated with traditional cooking methods. Andhra Pradesh's partnership with EESL exemplifies our state's dedication to innovative, environmentally responsible practices.'
MP Chinni, said: 'I am proud to witness this initiative begin in my constituency. Distributing induction cooktops under NECP is a vital step toward reducing health hazards and promoting energy efficiency. Andhra Pradesh's proactive partnership with EESL reflects our state's commitment to sustainable development.'
A Surya Kumari, Secretary to Government, said: "We are proud to support this timely and much-needed initiative in partnership with EESL. Anganwadi workers form the backbone of our rural health and nutrition systems, and it is only fitting that they receive tools that enhance both their safety and efficiency. Induction cooktops are more than appliances—they are a symbol of progress. They save time, reduce exposure to harmful smoke, and ease the domestic load on women. This programme truly embodies our vision of women's empowerment, environmental responsibility, and improved quality of life for the most underserved communities."

Bharat Mata row: Kerala govt vs Raj Bhavan stand-off hits the streets

The Raj Bhavan-Kerala government row over the contentious use of a saffron-flag-bearing image of Bharath Mata sitting astride a lion, arguably emblematic of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) notion of a Hindu Rashtra, at State events spilt onto the streets on Friday (June 20, 2025). General Education Minister V. Sivankutty re-ignited the simmering controversy on Thursday by walking out of an official function attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlerkar at the Raj Bhavan, stating that political symbols had no place in constitutional offices or State events. Raj Bhavan condemned the Minister's boycott as violating protocol and insulting the Governor's office. It also ruled out removing the picture from its central hall, the customary venue of official events. On Thursday night, the police stopped a set of Akhila Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers from storming Mr. Sivankutty's official residence in the capital. Black flag protest by ABVP However, unrest returned to the streets on Friday, with ABVP activists staging a black flag protest against Mr. Sivankutty near the Secretariat in the capital. The demonstration seemingly caught the police off-guard, who scuffled with ABVP workers and detained several of them. Later, Mr. Sivankutty reiterated his position that the controversial image having pride of place on the wall of Raj Bhavan's central hall was a heraldic device used by the RSS to 'broadcast its Hindu majoritarian ideology.' He said the picture's overtly religious and schismatic imagery had no Constitutional sanctity or place in a secular polity. 'It is not a national symbol like the Tricolour', he said. Mr. Sivankutty accused Raj Bhavan of using RSS symbols, including the images of its past leaders, as political agitprop to depict secular and diverse India as a singularly Hindu nation. SFI march to Raj Bhavan Later in the day, the police used water cannons and iron barricades to prevent a Students Federation of India (SFI) march from nearing Raj Bhavan's gates, forcing the activists to stage a sit-in protest on the road. SFI State secretary P.S. Sanjeev accused Mr. Arlerkar of using the Governor's residence as a bully pulpit to broadcast the RSS' socially schismatic political agenda, which sought to relegate minorities and marginalised sections of society as subaltern citizens in an overwhelmingly Hindu polity defined by a revanchist caste hierarchy. Mr. Sanjeev said Raj Bhavan was not the RSS' bequest to the State. 'It was sanctioned, funded and built by the people', he said. Earlier in June, Agriculture Minister P. Prasad had skipped the World Environment Day event at Raj Bhavan over the same issue. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had also condemned the use of political symbols, including that of the RSS, at official functions hosted by Raj Bhavan.

‘Bharat Mata' portrait pits LDF against Kerala Governor, again. ‘Turning Raj Bhavan into party office'

'I congratulate all the students who received the award. This is the highest honour in Scouts and Guides. But I want to draw the attention of the Honourable Governor to one issue. This event is co-organised by the State Government and the Raj Bhavan. Yet, an image representing a political party has been displayed here. It is inappropriate to pay tribute to that image. Thiruvananthapuram: A Kerala minister boycotted a Raj Bhavan event Thursday over the display of a Bharat Mata portrait in the second such incident this month, marking yet another low in the tussle between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government and Governor Rajendra Arlekar. He alleged that this was part of a move to turn the Raj Bhavan into 'a political party office'. This comes just weeks after Agriculture Minister P. Prasad boycotted another Raj Bhavan event on World Environment Day objecting to the presence of a Bharat Mata portrait. Prasad later held a separate event at the Secretariat. The opposition Congress party had extended support to the minister. 'The Governor must understand that Indian nationalism is rooted in the Constitution. It is not based on a singular cultural identity, but on an inclusive and democratic vision enshrined in our Constitution. This must be clearly asserted,' Sivankutty said in his statement. He further stated that India is not a monolithic entity constructed around any single symbol, image, or form, and that Indian nationalism draws its strength from its diversity. 'Describing the image of a woman holding a saffron flag as the sole symbol of Indian patriotism ignores this fundamental reality. The idea of India does not reside in mythology or imagination. It lives in the sovereignty of its people, the rule of law, and the constitutional guarantees of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity,' the minister added, saying the Governor must remember that Indian patriotism means upholding constitutional values and safeguarding diversity. However, Governor Rajendra Arlekar responded by asserting that there is no question of removing Bharat Mata from public spaces. 'There is no question of doing away with Bharat Mata, as we draw our idea of patriotism and nationhood from Bharat Mata,' the Raj Bhavan said in a statement, quoting the governor. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had also criticised the Governor for the display of a Bharat Mata portrait in his office. In a Thiruvananthapuram press briefing, Vijayan said the Governor's residence must remain neutral and should not become a platform for political propaganda. Earlier this week, members of the Students' Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the ruling CPI(M), held a protest march to the Raj Bhavan against the display of portraits of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologues Golwalkar and Hedgewar at the Governor's residence.
