VanMoof is back with a new custom e-bike and rebooted repair network

Dutch e-bike startup VanMoof is back two years after bankruptcy with its first model designed under new leadership. And despite past criticism that VanMoof's over-reliance on custom parts led to the company's downfall, the S6 sticks to the brand's signature bespoke design.
Today, VanMoof is betting that higher-quality custom parts, alongside a more robust servicing network, will allow it to stay true to its design-forward, tech-heavy core, while avoiding the repair and servicing pitfalls that came out of scaling a specialized product too quickly.
'I don't think there's a reason for VanMoof to exist if we're going to use off-the-shelf parts like everyone else,' co-CEO Elliot Wertheimer told TechCrunch backstage at Micromobility Europe in Brussels this week. 'We're here to push design, to have a bike that, if you've never ridden an e-bike in your life, you get on it and it's intuitive. Easy, like an iPhone.'
VanMoof previously raised more than $200 million in venture capital and gained a cult following for its premium, minimalist-designed e-bikes equipped with integrated lights, batteries, and motors.
VanMoof's unique selling point became its biggest liability. Like many venture-backed hardware businesses, the company grew too quickly to operate sustainably. When bikes broke down, customers were left stranded by an underdeveloped repair network and constrained supply — a consequence of the company's decision to use custom parts instead of off-the-shelf components.
The startup filed for bankruptcy in July 2023. A month later it was scooped up by e-scooter maker Lavoie, a business division of McLaren Applied, which itself was formerly a part of McLaren Group that builds parts for the McLaren F1.
Wertheimer said with support from McLaren Applied's Formula 1 expertise, VanMoof was able to redesign every component that had caused issues in past models, using performance data to create more reliable custom parts. Many of those parts are co-designed with large manufacturers, which not only assures quality, but also availability of parts should anything happen to VanMoof again, according to Wertheimer.
In certain areas of the business, VanMoof relented to a more industry-standard approach. The company's batteries, for example, are now co-designed and manufactured by Panasonic; VanMoof only supplies the mechanical and software integration. Previously, VanMoof had led on battery design.
The real critical piece, though, is an improved support network, according to Wertheimer.
'We fixed the whole business, from unit economics, logistics, and after-sale service,' Wertheimer said. 'We couldn't go out with something new before we set up the infrastructure to do so.'
VanMoof has built up a network of 250 repair centers and 130 sales partners, and is focusing sales on markets like Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.
'We have built a tech suite for [our repair partners] in terms of where they can buy components, a diagnostics app, a proper tracking system that tracks which parts went where, et cetera, to make warranty claims easier for them,' Wertheimer said, adding that VanMoof has set up an online training course for mechanic partners. 'That's super well set up and we're growing the network fast. We're adding 10 stores a week.'
VanMoof also hopes to launch in the U.S. by the end of 2025. However, Wertheimer said those plans have stalled as the company waits to see how President Trump's tariffs policy shakes out.
The company has already started taking reservations for the S6 in its current active markets, and expects to deliver the first few thousand vehicles in the beginning of August.
Customers were already complaining about slow repair times before VanMoof's brief shutdown in 2023. When it went bankrupt, some customers were stranded with broken bikes; others who had put down deposits for new bikes were out hundreds of dollars. Trust in the brand plummeted.
While some may never forgive VanMoof for its failures, the new S6 might might just help customers remember why they loved the brand in the first place.
I gave the S6 a quick spin this week in Brussels and was delighted to finally understand why so many riders had once gone gaga for VanMoof.
It's a sexy-looking bike. The S6 has the iconic VanMoof frame, made even sleeker with no visible welding. It also comes in several matte colors, including an 'electric blue' that looked more like lilac to me, and a pearl mint that Wertheimer says 'changes in the light' from white to green.
'We spent a lot of time on the colors,' he said.
The tech features are also impressive. Wertheimer said the company redesigned the electronic suite with help from McLaren Applied to ensure longevity even after the bike has been through its paces in rain, cold, heat, and other conditions.
The S6 platform delivers other features that VanMoof fans will recognize, like the Halo Ring which replaces a traditional display and glows different colors to keep riders informed about battery life and speed. The Halo on the S6 is much brighter, addressing complaints from past models of it being too dim in direct sunlight.
New tech features include an integrated navigation that pairs the bike to an accompanying mobile app, providing turn-by-turn directions via the Halo lights and sounds. There's also a new sound ecosystem, which includes a soft, but firm, cricket-like sound that a rider can use in place of a bell to alert other road users to their presence.
Anti-theft features have come standard on almost all VanMoof e-bike models, but Wertheimer says the S6 is even better.
'We have a new tracking system that's much more accurate,' he said, noting the system relies on cellular tower triangulation, GPS signal, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth to determine location of the vehicle within two meters.
Wertheimer also said VanMoof will soon introduce crash detection and other safety features.
As for the ride itself, the S6's improved mechanical shifting system comes pre-tuned from the factory and automatically adjusts based on speed, allowing for smoother momentum. It also works in tandem with the bike's four pedal-assist levels. The front-wheel motor, co-developed with 'a major Japanese manufacturer,' contributes to a more natural, intuitive riding experience. And the new suspension seatpost handles bumps in the road well. For a bike that only weighs 51 pounds, it's surprisingly sturdy.
And, of course, the iconic boost button adds that extra bit of oomph, making riders feel like they've just ridden over a mushroom in Mario Kart.
'When we took over VanMoof, we inherited great design, and an impressive product ecosystem,' Wertheimer said. 'We spent two years rebuilding our company and brand to reach this launch…we are ready to show the world what we can do again. That's what we see in the S6, our e-bike that can deliver on 11 years of promises.'

Stock indexes on Friday gave up an early advance and finished mostly lower on weakness in chip makers after a report from The Wall Street Journal stated that a top US official had told top global semiconductor makers that the US might revoke waivers for allies with semiconductor plants in China. Negative trade news also pressured stocks after the Financial Times reported that Japan had canceled a top-level trade meeting with the US, set for July 1, following a request from the Trump administration for Japan to increase its defense spending. Investors are bracing for more negative tariff news within the next week or so following President Trump's announcement last Wednesday that he intends to send letters to dozens of US trading partners within one to two weeks, setting unilateral tariffs ahead of the July 9 deadline that came with his 90-day pause. Stocks initially moved higher on Friday, driven by a Reuters report that the Iranian government said it is ready to discuss limitations on its uranium enrichment. Stocks were supported Friday by speculation that the US will give negotiations a chance before deciding to enter the Israel-Iran war, following the White House's announcement on Thursday that President Trump would decide within two weeks on any US involvement in the conflict, and there is still a "substantial chance" of a negotiated settlement. Stocks also had support from dovish comments on Friday from Fed Governor Waller, who said, "I think we have room to bring interest rates down as early as July, and then we can see kind of see what happens with inflation." Friday's US economic news was negative for stocks. The June Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey was unchanged at -4.0, weaker than expectations of an increase to -1.5. Also, the May index of leading economic indicators (LEI) fell -0.1% m/m, right on expectations, and the sixth consecutive month the LEI has declined. Hostilities between Israel and Iran entered an eighth day Friday with no signs of easing. Israel struck more of Iran's nuclear and missile production sites Friday and warned it could bring down Iran's leadership. Meanwhile, Iran said it won't negotiate with the US while Israel's assault continues. Iranian President Pezeshkian said the only way to end the imposed war is to "unconditionally stop" the enemy's aggression. Iran showed no signs of backing down and reiterated an intention to respond with force if the US were to get directly involved in Israeli attacks. So far, Iran has not tried to close the vital Strait of Hormuz that handles about 20% of the world's daily crude shipments. However, a French naval liaison group said that navigational signals from about 1000 vessels a day moving through the strait are being disrupted due to "extreme jamming" of signals from the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, which caused a collision of two tankers Tuesday near the Strait of Hormuz. The markets are discounting the chances at 17% for a -25 bp rate cut at the July 29-30 FOMC meeting. Overseas stock markets on Friday settled mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up by +0.70%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.07%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -0.22%. Interest Rates September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) Friday closed up +6 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -1.6 bp to 4.375%. T-notes on Friday recovered from early losses and moved higher on the weaker-than-expected Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey. Also, dovish comments from Fed Governor Waller pushed T-note prices higher when he said, "I think we have room to bring interest rates down as early as July." T-notes are still supported by safe-haven demand due to the possibility that the US might bomb Iran's Fordow nuclear complex. T-note prices also saw support from weakness in stocks. T-notes on Friday initially moved lower on reduced safe-haven demand after President Trump vowed to seek a diplomatic solution on Iran's nuclear program over the next two weeks. Also, rising inflation expectations are bearish for T-notes after the US 10-year breakeven inflation expectations rate Friday rose to a 2-week high at 2.34%. European government bond yields on Friday were mixed. The 10-year German bund yield fell -0.4 bp to 2.517%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +0.7 bp to 4.537%. The Eurozone Jun consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell -0.1 to -15.3, weaker than expectations of an increase to -14.9. The German May PPI fell -1.2% y/y, right on expectations and the biggest decline in 8 months. UK May retail sales ex-auto fuel fell -2.8% m/m, weaker than expectations of -0.7% m/m and the biggest decline in nearly 1-1/2 years. Swaps are discounting the chances at 7% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the July 24 policy meeting. US Stock Movers Chip makers turned lower on Friday and weighed on the broader market. Lam Research (LRCX) and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -2%. Also, Applied Materials (AMAT), Intel (INTC), Qualcomm (QCOM), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), Broadcom (AVGO), and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed down by more than -1%. Weakness in the Magnificent Seven stocks Friday was a negative factor for the overall market. Alphabet (GOOGL) closed down more than -3%. Also, Meta Platforms (META), Nvidia (NVDA), and (AMZN) closed down more than -1%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) closed down -0.59%. However, Apple (AAPL) bucked the trend and closed up more than +2%. Tesla (TSLA) closed up +0.03%. Accenture (ACN) closed down more than -6% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after lowering its full-year operating margin forecast to 15.6% from a previous forecast of 15.6%-15.7%. Smith & Wesson Brands (SWBI) closed down more than -19% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of 20 cents, weaker than the consensus of 23 cents. Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT) closed down more than -3% after William Blair downgraded the stock to market perform from outperform. Johnson Controls International (JCI) closed down more than -1% after Oppenheimer downgraded the stock to perform from outperform. Kroger (KR) closed up more than +9% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 adjusted EPS of $1.49, better than the consensus of $1.45. CarMax (KMX) closed up more than +6% after reporting Q1 net sales of $7.55 billion, stronger than expectations of $7.52 billion. GMS Inc (GMS) closed up more than +24% after the Wall Street Journal reported that Home Depot had made an offer for the company, potentially setting off a bidding war with QXO Inc, which made a $5 billion offer for the company earlier this week. Circle Internet Group (CRCL) closed up more than +20%, adding to Wednesday's +34% surge after the US Senate passed stablecoin legislation setting up regulatory rules for cryptocurrencies pegged to the dollar. Mondelez International (MDLZ) closed up more than +2% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after Wells Fargo Securities upgraded the stock to overweight from neutral with a price target of $78. Fair Isaac Co (FICO) closed up more than +2% after its Board of Directors approved a stock repurchase program to acquire up to $1 billion of the company's outstanding common stock. Darden Restaurants (DRI) closed up more than 1% after reporting that Q4 comparable same-store sales rose 4.60%, stronger than the consensus of 3.46%. Each year, the Skytrax World Airline Awards, often referred to as 'the Oscars of the aviation industry,' recognize the carriers that deliver on that promise. First launched in 1999, the awards are based on global passenger surveys and are considered among the most respected honors in commercial aviation. At the June 17, 2025, ceremony in France, Qatar Airways was named the World's Best Airline for the second consecutive year and the ninth time in Skytrax history. Qatar Airways rose to the top out of more than 325 airlines that were included in the survey results. According to Skytrax's award and survey methodology, the ranking is 'not restricted to member airlines or a pre-selected choice of airline, and any airline in the world can be nominated. The focus of the survey is for customers to make their own, personal choices as to which airline they consider to be the best, underlining the brand as the Passenger's Choice Awards.' 'Being named the World's Best Airline for the ninth time is an extraordinary honor," Qatar Airways Group CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said in the Skytrax press release. "Being continuously recognized as a 5-Star Airline further underscores our mission: to set new benchmarks for the industry and to ensure that our passengers feel genuinely cared for, valued and inspired to return.' Qatar Airways, which is the flag carrier of Qatar and is headquartered in Doha, was also named the Best Airline in the Middle East. Qatar Airways' largest aircraft, the Airbus A380, is a flier favorite. It has two floors and one of the world's largest on-board lounges. Its business class—branded as Qsuites and includes a series of private suites with sliding doors—was named the World's Best Business Class, while the airline's Al Mourjan Garden Lounge in Doha was named the World's Best Business Class Airline Lounge. Singapore Airlines, which was No. 1 in 2023 and has won the award five times, held onto second place for the second year in a row. In third place for 2025 was Cathay Pacific, while Emirates came in at No. 4 and All Nippon Airways (ANA) at No. 5.

The Nothing Phone 1 might be nearing the end of its update life, but it's not quite done yet. A new software update is rolling out that brings one of Android 15's key features, with a specific tailoring to Nothing's UI. According to a post on the official Nothing Community forum, the update introduces Privacy space: a new secure area on your phone for sensitive apps and data. You can access it by swiping right in the app drawer, and it works much like the feature seen on other Android phones, requiring separate authentication and keeping apps isolated from the rest of the system. You can also set a different privacy password for both the new Privacy space and the existing App Locker. The update also brings a revamped Hotspot Manager for controlling connected devices, fixes an issue with the Glyph Composer lighting effect, and lets users disable face unlock vibrations via a new toggle. As expected, the June 2025 Android security patch is included, as well as other big fixes. This could be one of the last feature-rich updates for the Nothing Phone 1. Nothing previously confirmed to Android Authority that the device won't get Android 16, as it has already received its three promised OS upgrades. Security patches will continue for a bit longer, but new feature rollouts will likely start tapering off without the latest OS support. Initial user reactions to the Nothing post in the comments are mixed.
