After Mac Shay, a college football analyst, called Mateer
"the most competitive motherf*er you will ever see,"
Oklahoma GM Jim Nagy wasted no time in responding. Nagy echoed the bold opinion and added his accolades for Mateer, citing "tough" and "leadership." The trade has sparked buzz heading into Oklahoma's spring camp as the Sooners gear up for an important 2025 campaign
Oklahoma GM Jim Nagy confirms analyst Mac Shay's praise for
John Mateer
's grit and leadership
On the 'Oklahoma Breakdown' podcast, Jim Nagy essentially let Mac Shay take a swing at Mateer by repeating Shay's fiery compliment, declaring Mateer as '
A flat-out competitor; something you just can't coach'
, Rummage from shotgun via (Nagy) podcast. Nagy said, after observing Mateer in spring drills, his respect increased:
'He's more than what I thought.
He throws under pressure that few can'.
Nagys said Mateer is competitive, poised, and a leader both on and off the field.
The endorsement comes as buzz grows around Mateer, who joined the chaos of the quarterback room in Norman after a breakout season at Washington State. At that point in his career, Mateer was the complete package; he passed for 29 touchdowns and rushed for 15, displaying arm talent and a rare mix of mobility.
However, analysts such as Mac Shay have compared his intense mentality and playmaker ability to those of Oklahoma legends Baker Mayfield, with him being on the Heisman radar.
John Mateer's future: high expectations fueled by competition and leadership
Can Mateer back up the hype in one of college football's toughest conferences may be the ultimate question, though. Last season, the Sooners finished among the bottom 10 nationally in scoring offense, so there is little question the heat is on Mateer.

Nagy acknowledged the pressure but framed Mateer as the ideal quarterback for a winning program:
'You need a guy like him if you want to compete at the highest level. He's the next in line after greats like Jalen Hurts and Kyler Murray.'
He made clear there's no added stress on Mateer, but the signs point to a player with the drive to rise to the challenge.

IND vs ENG: 'I just...' - Jasprit Bumrah explains his mantra despite seeing plenty of catches going down

LEEDS, ENGLAND - JUNE 21: Jasprit Bumrah of India looks on during Day Two of the 1st Rothesay Test Match between England and India at Headingley on June 21, 2025 in Leeds, England. (Photo by) There were four catches dropped off Jasprit Bumrah 's bowling in England's first innings of the Leeds Test at Headingley, and never did the Indian speedster lose his cool. He tried to hide his disappointment behind his smile, buried his face in his cap, and moved on to the next delivery. "I like to play cricket to enjoy my time whenever I'm out on the field, so that is why I smile," Bumrah told BBC Sport, explaining why he always plays with a smile on his face. 13:26 Jasprit Bumrah press conference: Lashes out at critics, dropped catches and no balls Bumrah, who picked up five wickets in England's first innings, gave the Indian fielders the benefit of the doubt as they dropped one chance after another. "Dropped catches—I understand nobody is doing it on purpose, and obviously everyone is trying their best. Cool weather with the ball sometimes makes it difficult to see over here as well. So I do understand," he said. "Some things are part and parcel of the game. I don't want to let it affect me and then affect my future spells. I try to forget as soon as possible and quickly move forward," he added. England were dismissed for 465 on the third day in reply to India's first-innings 471. India stretched their lead by stumps to 96 at 90/2, thanks to KL Rahul's unbeaten 47, with Shubman Gill—fresh from a century in his first innings as India captain—unbeaten on six. "The game is in the balance," Bumrah said. "We have to bat well. The wicket is a little bit two-paced, so it will be an interesting game to come." IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah's wife shares adorable photo of son after seamer's fifer at Headingley

Jasprit Bumrah took a five wicket haul during the first innings of the opening Test between India and England at Headingley. (Getty Images) Jasprit Bumrah 's wife, Sanjana Ganesan, shared a photo, seemingly of their son Angad, on Instagram on the same day the Indian seamer completed a five-wicket haul during the first Test against England at Headingley. In an Instagram Story, Ganesan posted a picture of a child with the red cricket ball in hands with "England", "Jasprit Bumrah " and his bowling figures of "24.4-5-83-5" written on it. Bumrah was a one-man show for Indian bowling at Leeds as he accounted for the wickets of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue to register figures of 5/83. Mohammed Siraj (2/122) and Prasidh Krishna (3/128) were the other wicket-takers for India as England posted 465 on the board, coming six runs shy of India's first innings total of 471. Jasprit Bumrah press conference: Lashes out at critics, dropped catches and no balls "At this moment pretty good wicket to bat on. It is a little bit two paced, no big demons in wicket. Due to weather, new ball will swing but that is what you expect in Test cricket. We would like to get a big total and get that cushion," said Bumrah on the bowling conditions. The Indian seamer could have had more wickets had the Indian fielding been up to the mark and he not overstepped. The bigger culprit, though, were the six catches that went down. Sanjana Ganesan's Instagram Story after Jasprit Bumrah took a fifer at Headingley. "Yeah, just for a second. But you understand that you can't really sit down and cry, isn't it? You have to move forward with the game. So, what I look to do is not to take it too far in my head and try and quickly forget it because all of them are also new to the game. "Sometimes the ball is difficult to sight and nobody is dropping the catch purposely. Everybody is trying really hard. It does happen. So, I don't want to create a scene or put more pressure on the fielder that I'm angry, I'm kicking the box or I'm doing something. It's okay. "It's part and parcel of the game. Obviously, if it (catches) would have been taken earlier, that's good, but people will learn from this experience," he added. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story.
