Chester May Festival 2025 day three: Caballo De Mar can win the Chester Cup

Yahoo08-05-2025

CABALLO DE MAR can triumph in the Ladbrokes Chester Cup (Heritage Handicap) (GBBPlus Race) (3.05pm) on final day of the Boodles Chester May Festival.
George Scott's four-year-old has been in fine form on the all-weather recently and he can transfer that back on Turf to land the prestigious feature of the May meeting on the Roodee. Having landed a first career win on his eighth start over an extended 1m5f at Ayr last September, the gelded son of Phoenix Of Spain has turned into a winning machine, scoring four times on the all-weather track at Southwell. He has progressed up the handicap ratings with those four wins, the last over 2m½f at the end of last month. He has risen 19lbs since that first success in Scotland but he keeps defying the handicapper and the latest win saw him pick up a 5lb penalty which ensured his place in Friday's Chester Cup.
He still looks on a winnable mark and back on Turf he can progress further to triumph. Caballo De Mar has a decent enough draw in stall eight and as a horse who likes to race prominently he can hopefully get a good early position. He is yet to stay this far but everything suggests he will and it may bring out more improvement in him.

The Hugo Palmer-trained Zoffee – from the nearby Manor House Stables of former England and Liverpool FC forward Michael Owen – won the race last year and will go well again off the same handicap mark as his triumph 12 months ago, from another good draw in stall four. Andrew Balding's recent Kempton runner-up Who's Glen and the Joseph O'Brien-trained Irish raider Leinster are others who have a chance of victory but Caballo De Mar can just come out on top.
THE FOXES can win the Group Two IRE-Incentive, It Pays To Buy Irish Huxley Stakes (2.35pm). Andrew Balding's five-year-old won the Dante Stakes at York in 2023 before finishing fifth in the Derby at Epsom and runner-up in the Grade One Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park. He probably hasn't gone on as well as connections hoped since that promising Classic year. But he did win a Listed event over 1m2f at Newcastle in November last year before finishing fourth in the Group One Hong Kong Cup the following month. He finished second to Rebel's Romance in the Amir Trophy at Al Uqda in February and will be making his seasonal return in Britain on the Roodee. This looks a good starting point for the son of Churchill and he can beat chiefly Space Legend to land a first Group race win since that Dante Stakes victory.
TAILORMAN can take the finale to Chester's May Festival, the Ladbrokes Get Rewarded With Ladbucks Chester Plate Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (4.45pm). Trainer Ian Williams has a good record in staying contests on the Roodee and his five-year-old can provide him with another victory in the 2m2f handicap. Tailorman is yet to win beyond two miles, but he has some good form in these type of events, having been placed three times at Chester. He was third over two miles last August and second over an extended 1m6f the following month on the Roodee. He won at Kempton later on in September and is generally very consistent. He returned to action with another placed effort, when third at Nottingham at the end of last month. With that run under his belt he can do even better and triumph ahead of chiefly Charlie Johnston pair Artisan Dancer and previous course winner Dreams Adozen.
Course and distance winner TWO TEMPTING can score again on the Roodee in the opener, the CAA Stellar Earl Grosvenor Handicap (1.30pm). Jonathan Portman's six-year-old won over course and distance from just a 1lb higher handicap mark last August. He ran a decent race when fourth at Newbury last month, hinting that he may be ready to return to winning ways. He is drawn in stall one and although it is not as advantageous over a mile at Chester, it is still always preferable to be in the low numbers. Two Tempting can take advantage and score again.
RATHGAR can win the Precision Facades Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (3.40pm). Jack Channon's five-year-old won at Goodwood and Yarmouth last season, the first over 1m6f and the latter in July over this 1m2f trip. He is 3lb higher in the handicap now but he ran a smart race to be second to City Of Delight at Epsom last month. Rathgar can go one better and return to winning ways.
REEL ROSIE could land something of a shock win in the Xenon Workplace Apprentice Handicap (GBBplus Race) (4.10pm). Jennie Candlish's six-year-old has been running over Jumps recently, winning at Sedgefield in November and finishing third at the same venue in January. She is back on the Flat for the first time since she was sixth at Wolverhampton in October. But Candlish's mare has won at Chester over 1m2f in September 2023 and she is now 2lb lower than for that success. The hope is she can take advantage of that mark over this longer trip of 1m4f to at least make the frame. James Owen's treble-seeking Sportingsilvermine and Obsidian Knight, also bidding for a hat-trick of successes, rate the main dangers.
Willie Haggas' ORIONIS can land a first victory in the Boodles Darley EBF Maiden Stakes (GBB/GBBplus Race) (2.05pm). The Sea The Stars filly was sixth on her debut at Wolverhampton last November and third at Wetherby, stepped up to 1m2f, on her return to action last month. With that under her belt the three-year-old can land a first victory on her third start.

Journalist Confirms Liverpool's Interest in Signing £40m Star

Liverpool Eyeing Guehi as Next Defensive Anchor Amid Quansah Exit Liverpool are continuing their methodical rebuild under Arne Slot by exploring the market for a new central defender, with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi emerging as a serious candidate. As reported by Lewis Steele, speaking on Anfield Index with Dave Davis, the 24-year-old centre-back is firmly on the Reds' radar, but a move is far from imminent, at least for now. Guehi a Leading Option but Not the Only One Guehi's name is not new to Liverpool's recruitment team. 'Liverpool aren't completely all-in on him at this stage but that could change very quickly,' said Steele. That subtle caveat speaks volumes about the club's evolving transfer strategy. Under Slot, Liverpool have shown a willingness to act decisively when the conditions align, and Guehi's contract situation, he has just one year remaining and could be available for around £40m, is starting to draw attention at Kirkby. Advertisement 'They were interested in him last summer but maybe they noticed his contract situation,' Steele added, suggesting the opportunity is now more economically appealing. Guehi would not arrive as a panic buy or a developmental project. Instead, he would be viewed as a ready-made option, capable of playing immediately and contributing to a title-defending campaign. 'He's a very good player. Palace fans absolutely adore him. He's their leader, their captain and he won them the FA Cup,' said Steele. His character and leadership are precisely the type of traits that Liverpool's dressing room crave. Defensive Overhaul Signals Strategic Planning Slot's first summer window is already showing aggressive movement. Jeremie Frimpong has joined from Bayer Leverkusen to succeed Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, while Milos Kerkez is poised to arrive at left-back. In midfield, Liverpool shattered their transfer record to secure Florian Wirtz for £113 million. Advertisement The Guehi links, however, mark a potentially critical next step in the spine of Slot's Liverpool 2.0. With Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konaté both facing uncertain long-term futures, though neither is expected to leave this summer, bringing in another versatile and composed centre-back fits the puzzle. 'I don't think that Guehi is the only centre-back they are looking at. I just think that he is one of the options,' Steele clarified. Photo: IMAGO That careful wording reinforces the reality of modern recruitment. Liverpool are not desperate, but rather deliberate. They recognise value, timing and character, and Guehi ticks all three boxes. England Role Increases Guehi's Appeal There's another reason Liverpool's interest may accelerate. Guehi is expected to start for England at the World Cup next summer, which could exponentially raise his profile and price. 'He has all of the modern centre-back traits that you would want and he is set to start for England in the World Cup next summer,' said Steele. Advertisement That looming tournament could turn a £30 million opportunity into a £60 million battle. Timing, as ever, will be everything. 'If he is available at that cut-price deal with him only having one year left on his deal, then Liverpool would step it up,' Steele emphasised. In short, it may be now or never. Slot's Summer Vision Taking Shape There's a clear sense that Liverpool's business is calculated and holistic. They have not only replaced key full-backs but are also layering depth and leadership across all lines. With Guehi, they would be acquiring a Premier League-proven defender, a national team starter and a dressing room leader — all before his prime years. 'It would make sense if they signed him, but he isn't the only option,' Steele concluded, offering a fitting summary of the current stance. Liverpool might not yet be all-in on Guehi, but they are standing close to the table, chips in hand, waiting for the right moment to play.

Florian Wirtz Joins Liverpool For A Club Record Fee From Leverkusen

More Getty Images) Liverpool FC via Getty Images The biggest deal in Bundesliga history is completed. On Friday, Liverpool announced that the club had signed German star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz has signed a contract until 2030. 'I feel very happy and very proud,' Wirtz said in a Liverpool club statement. 'Finally it's done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it's done and I am really happy. I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.' It is a record deal for Leverkusen. According to the transfer experts at Transfermarkt , Leverkusen will receive an initial €125 million ($144 million), with a further €15 million ($17.3 million) in very achievable add-ons, plus another possible €10 million ($11.5 million) in more difficult-to-reach add-ons. Where does that deal rank among Premier League players? Wirtz has become the most expensive German player, the most expensive player in Premier League history , and the sixth most expensive player in the history of the game . If all add-ons are met, it could rise to the third most expensive transfer ever. 'We are very proud of the path he has taken at Bayer 04," said Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro in a club statement. "Now we have to let him go. We will miss Florian, but part of him will always be connected to Bayer 04. His sporting ability and his irrepressible commitment are an example and inspiration to us to show our full ambition to establish Bayer 04 at the top of German football and always strive to achieve the maximum success." Florian Wirtz helped guide Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024. (Photo by Stuart ...) Getty Images For Leverkusen, the Wirtz departure marks another moment in what will be a massive rebuild for the club this summer. Leverkusen, after all, not only lost Wirtz but also sold Jérémie Frimpong to Liverpool, as well as losing head coach Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid. With that in mind, new head coach Erik ten Hag now faces the tricky task of building a new squad that can chase Rekordmeister Bayern Munich. The fees earned this summer will help. After all, Leverkusen also received €40 million ($46 million) for Frimpong, as well as a significant fee for Alonso. Using that money well is now a task for the director of sport, Simon Rolfes. As for Liverpool, the Reds were able to add one of the most talented players ever produced in German football. Indeed, Wirtz is an impact player who has guided Leverkusen to an undefeated domestic double in 2023/24. At Liverpool, Wirtz now wants to continue to collect titles. 'I would like to win everything every year,' Wirtz said 'First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work. In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League, so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.'

Man Utd interested in Liverpool midfielder Nagano

Fuka Nagano was part of Japan's squad at the 2023 Women's World Cup [Getty Images] Manchester United are interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Fuka Nagano on a free transfer this summer. The 26-year-old's contract runs out at Liverpool at the end of June and she is yet to agree an extension despite having offers on the table for several months. Advertisement Sources at Liverpool suggested in May they were hopeful Nagano would renew her contract but United's interest could complicate matters. Nagano joined Liverpool in January 2023 and quickly established herself as a regular starter in the team. The midfielder could link-up with fellow Japanese international Hinata Miyazawa if United are successful in their pursuit.
