Adam Brody calls 'Blue's Clues' audition the role he fought hardest for: 'I would've loved it'
Everybody wants this: Adam Brody says he "tried real hard" to star on Blue's Clues.
The actor called his audition for the beloved children's show the role he fought the hardest for during the early days of his career, sharing the endearing anecdote with fellow funnymen Ted Danson, Seth Rogen, Julio Torres, John Mulaney, and Jason Segel for The Hollywood Reporter's comedy actor roundtable.
"I really wanted Blue's Clues early on when I first moved to L.A.," Brody shared.
"And you fought for it?" Rogen asked.
"I tried real hard, yeah," the Nobody Wants This star said. "It was like 1999, I auditioned for it, I wanted it, I didn't get it. But I would've loved it. It's a show for toddlers. But it's all of those early ones."
Brody then stunned the roundtable by sharing that he also auditioned for the role of Henry Parker on the teen drama Dawson's Creek, which ultimately went to Michael Pitt. "I read with Scott Speedman, sweating," Brody recounted.
"Oh, they wanted pouty lips," Torres quipped.
"Do you know the role?" Mulaney asked Torres, who explained, "No, I just know the actor."
Rogen said with laughter, "He is pouty."
Blue's Clues premiered on Nick Jr. in 1996 and introduced Steve Burns as the animated show's original human host. Burns departed the show in 2002 and was replaced by Donovan Patton and later, Joshua Dela Cruz, the show's current host. But Burns has remained a fixture among young fans and grown-up ones alike, having gone viral for checking in on his now-millennial followers on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic and Donald Trump's polarizing presidential re-election.But, hey, Brody has since bounced back from those perceived losses. He landed a memorable gig on Gilmore Girls as Lane's (Keiko Agena) Hep Alien bandmate and boyfriend Dave Rygalski. Then came his breakout role on the hit 2003 teen drama The O.C., in which Brody starred as fan-favorite Seth Cohen across all four seasons.
He's recently generated awards buzz for his role as a hunky rabbi on Netflix's rom-com series Nobody Wants This. The star earned his very first Golden Globe nomination earlier this year for the role and is considered an Emmy contender at the upcoming ceremony this fall.
Appearing on Entertainment Weekly's Awardist podcast alongside costar Kristen Bell, Brody marveled about the "instantaneous" success of the show and his role, which has been regarded as the kickstarter of what has been hailed as the Adam Brody renaissance.
"I think I was getting stopped on the street pretty much day after it came out and I was getting texts from anyone — my handyman, anyone in my life — in my phone," Brody said. "I've never witnessed anything that felt quite as overnight and as pervasive as this."

Photo courtesy of Netflix NEW YORK, June 21 (UPI) -- Animal Kingdom and Walking Dead: Dead City actor Jake Weary says he wanted to star in The Waterfront because the new Netflix drama gives him the chance to play a type of character he doesn't usually get offered. "It was a character that I've never really explored before, someone who is really outwardly charismatic and charming and trying to use his charms to get certain things and manipulate people," Weary, 35, told UPI in a phone interview Thursday. "I'd always played more introverted characters and characters that are harboring secrets and there's just a lot of darkness," he said. "There are elements there with Cane, but I think, for the most part, he's someone that actually smiles. I usually play characters that just scowl all the time, so I thought it was kind of a nice game changer for me." Now streaming on Netflix, the show was written-produced by Dawson's Creek and Scream creator Kevin Williamson. It follows the Buckleys, a wealthy North Carolina family as they try to save their fishing empire by smuggling drugs. Weary plays Cane Buckley, while Holt McCallany plays his father Harlan, Maria Bello plays his mother Belle and Melissa Benoist plays his older sister Bree. "I always thought Cane is kind of the glue that kept the family together," the actor said. "I feel like he's the one that creates the big Buckley family group chat, just to check in with everybody," he added. "When he notices that the family is in dire straits, he really jumps at the opportunity to take the bull by the horns and fix things." Weary and his co-stars quickly bonded when they arrived on the show's set in North Carolina. The actor described himself and Bello as "besties" and said they frequently text since she has been working out of the country and haven't been able to see each other for awhile. "And me and Holt have this really, really strong relationship, too, because I think there are a lot of parallels in our lives," he added. "We both had mothers who were big-time divas. His mother was a ballroom singer and my mom was a soap opera actress," Weary said, referring to McCallany's mother, entertainer Julie Wilson, and his own, Guiding Light icon Kim Zimmer. "We both grew up on the East Coast and have similar interests and can, literally, talk for hours. Having the two of them together [Bello and McCallany] together was just a dream come true." Further connecting the cast and crew was the fact that Hurricane Helene ravaged North Carolina while they were there. "There's a lot of people on the crew whose homes were affected by the hurricane," Weary recalled. "You could see how it brought the crew together. Everybody was super-supportive of each other," he said. "It was just really beautiful to see." One perfect Holt McCallany scene to welcome you to The Waterfront. Montreal's Canada Day parade cancelled for a second year in a row, organizer says
MONTREAL - Montreal has cancelled its once-annual Canada Day parade for the second time in as many years, event organizers announced this week. Chief organizer Nicolas Cowen announced the decision in a news release, citing a number of reasons for the cancellation including potential municipal worker job action, difficult relations with city departments and planning problems. It's the second consecutive year in which Montreal won't have a parade — an event that began in 1977. Thursday's announcement came less than two weeks before Canada Day. 'We understand this news is disappointing to many, especially the families, performers, volunteers, and attendees who look forward to this cherished tradition,' organizers said in a Facebook post. 'The parade has not only been a celebration of Canada but a proud reflection of Montreal's diversity, resilience, and community spirit.' Cowen blamed red tape and politics for the 2024 cancellation, citing issues in securing permits and funding and getting approval from government officials. When the event was last held in 2023, Cowen said he was forced to complete some sets of paperwork multiple times and find 148 last-minute volunteers to satisfy city rules. The event was also cancelled between 2020 and 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cowen said the parade has become increasingly difficult to organize without disruptions in recent years. According to organizers, the event draws 120,000 spectators. Cowen said he remains hopeful he can mend ties with the city and the parade can return. 'With its cancellation, not only does the city lose a major tourism draw, but Canadian culture itself takes a hit on one of the most important national holidays,' organizers said. A City of Montreal spokeswoman disputes the assertions, saying the organizer failed to submit a project proposal for the parade. 'As was the case last year, the promoter of the Canada Day parade, Nicholas Cowen, did not submit a project application to the City of Montreal, despite the city inviting him to do so on several occasions,' Nicky Cayer said in an email. Cayer says Canada on the Move, a brand new festival, did get a permit and the July 1 free event includes 13 totems — one for each province and territory — over a 1.2 kilometre route through historic Old Montreal. Morgan Wallen marked the opening night of his "I'm The Problem" Tour with a fiery performance at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, including what seemed to be his reaction to recent news headlines.
