Two men sentenced to life in prison for complicity in murder of Maltese journalist
Two men were sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday after being convicted of complicity in the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Jamie Vella and Robert Agius were accused of supplying the bomb that killed Caruana Galizia in 2017.
Both were found guilty of the charges last week and on Tuesday were given the maximum sentence of life in prison.
Caruana Galizia, 53, was murdered on 16 October 2017 by a car bomb that was detonated while she was driving near her home.
In her career, she had written extensively about suspected corruption in political and business circles in Malta, and her murder shocked Europe and triggered angry protests in the Mediterranean island country.
Caruana Galizia's investigative reports had targeted people in then-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat's inner circle whom she accused of having offshore companies in tax havens disclosed in the Panama Papers leak.
She also targeted the opposition and at the time of her death was facing more than 40 libel suits.
The six-week trial also concerned the separate murder of a lawyer, Carmel Chircop, who was shot and killed in 2015.
Two other men, George Degiorgio and Adrian Agius, were convicted and sentenced to life in prison for that murder on Thursday.
George Degiorgio and his brother Alfred Degiorgio both pleaded guilty in 2022 to carrying out the murder of Caruana Galizia.

They were each sentenced to 40 years in prison.
A third man, Vincent Muscat, pleaded guilty in 2021 for his role in the Caruana Galizia murder, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
He testified in the recent jury trial after being granted a presidential pardon for his role in the Chircop murder on the condition he tell the whole truth.
Yorgen Fenech, a prominent Maltese businessman, is currently out of jail on bail awaiting trial on charges of alleged complicity in the Caruana Galizia murder.

Israel says Iranian plot to attack citizens in Cyprus foiled
Israel foiled an Iranian plot to attack its citizens in Cyprus, officials said. A suspect was arrested in Cyprus on espionage and terror charges. Cyprus has become a key transit hub for stranded Israelis amid the ongoing conflict. Israel said on Saturday that an Iranian plot to attack Israeli citizens in Cyprus had been foiled as the war between the two arch-rivals raged for a ninth day. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar wrote on X that Iran's Revolutionary Guards had 'tried to carry out an attack on Israeli citizens in Cyprus', a transit point where thousands have gathered either awaiting repatriation to Israel or having left the country. 'Thanks to the activity of the Cypriot security authorities, in cooperation with Israeli security services, the terror attack was thwarted,' Saar said. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – the terror arm of the Iranian regime – tried to carry out an attack on Israeli citizens in Cyprus. Thanks to the activity of the Cypriot security authorities, in cooperation with Israeli security services, the terror attack was thwarted.… — Gideon Sa'ar | גדעון סער (@gidonsaar) June 21, 2025 Cyprus police said earlier on Saturday that they had arrested an individual on espionage and terror charges, with local media reporting the suspect had ties to Iran. It was not clear whether the arrest was related to the plan mentioned by Saar, and Cypriot police declined to provide extensive details on the case. The Mediterranean island, home to many Israeli expats and a popular holiday destination, has become a staging post for Israelis seeking to return home by air or sea after being stranded abroad by the start of the fighting. A first boat from Cyprus carrying 1 500 Israelis docked in the Israeli port of Ashdod on Friday. After Israel's airports were closed and outbound flights cancelled following Israel's attack on Iran on 13 June, up to 150 000 Israelis found themselves stranded abroad, according to transport ministry figures. Thousands have since returned home on flights by Israeli national carrier El Al and low-cost airline Arkia with Larnaca in Cyprus, which is used as a hub along with Athens, Rome, Milan, and Paris. Thanks to its location in the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus has become a key transit hub for third-country nationals fleeing the region since the recent outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Iran.

Sunken Bayesian superyacht lifted out of the water off Sicily as salvage operate completes
PORTICELLO, Italy (AP) — A British-flagged luxury superyacht that sank off Sicily last year, killing U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch and six others, was lifted fully out of the water on Saturday afternoon as salvage recovery crews completed the operation to bring it ashore for further investigation, the local coast guard said. The white top and blue hull of the 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian, covered with algae and mud, was visible clear of the sea in a holding area of a yellow floating crane barge, a witness said.
