A Woman and Baby Were Found Naked and Dead in a Park. Now an American Man Is Under Arrest in Greece
Rexal Ford, a 46-year-old American, was arrested in Greece on suspicion of killing a 30-year-old mother and her baby
Surveillance footage, witness testimony and fingerprints led authorities to Ford
Prosecutors believe the deaths were a double murder, and Ford is awaiting an extradition hearing in Greece as the investigation continuesGreek authorities arrested an American man on Friday on suspicion of killing a 30-year-old mother and her baby whose bodies were found by police at a park in Italy.
The 46-year-old man, identified as Rexal Ford, was detained on an arrest warrant issued in Italy, citing 'strong evidence' of his alleged involvement in the death of the baby girl and her mother — who are also believed to be American — Italian news outlets, L'Unione Sarda, Il Messaggero and Corriere della Sera reported, citing prosecutors.
The bodies of the mother and baby were found in Rome's Villa Pamphili park on Saturday, the local outlets reported. Both were found naked and without any identification.
Investigators in Italy told CBS News that the cause of the woman's death was unknown, 'but there is a reasonable suspicion that it is a double murder,' Deputy Prosecutor Giuseppe Cascini said to the outlet.
According to Rome Chief Prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi, the mother was killed several days before the baby and was found several hundred meters away. The mother was found under a black bag, Lo Voi said to the local outlets.
'It is not exactly understandable that someone who was with a woman and a baby girl, once the woman and the girl died, whom he carried in his arms, would then leave the country without calling for help, without seeking assistance,' Lo Voi said, per CBS News. 'In itself, that doesn't look good.'
Video surveillance and witness reports showed that the three were spotted together on several occasions, sometimes speaking in English, Corriere della Sera reported. At one point, Ford and the woman were seen arguing in the street, and police took down his information, which later led to his arrest.
Police discovered the identities of the woman, her baby and Ford, by cross-referencing footage of them seen at a soup kitchen nearby the Vatican and testimonies of witnesses who were in the park along with homeless people nearby, the Italian outlet reported.
Authorities were able to track Ford down due to fingerprints left on the bag covering the mother when she was found dead by police, CBS reported. He was found on the Greek island of Skiathos through cellphone data.According to Corriere della Sera, authorities found the baby's pink dress in a trash can nearby where their bodies were found. Police estimate that the baby was around 6 to 8 months old.
The mother had a tattoo of a skeleton with a surfboard that seemed to have the colors of the Lithuanian flag, the Italian outlet reported. Forensic teams also found a total of 40 items at the scene, including a bra and sleeping bag.
When Ford's warrant is forwarded to Greek officials, he will appear in court for an extradition hearing, the local outlets said, citing Greek police.

Padilla claims Noem clash wasn't planned stunt: ‘rhetoric compelled me'
California Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla insisted Saturday that he didn't pre-plan his heckling of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Los Angeles — claiming that the stunt that got him handcuffed was a spur of the moment attempt at congressional oversight. Padilla argued in an interview with MSNBC hosts Eugene Daniels and Jonathan Capehart that Noem's 'rhetoric compelled' him to approach her lectern at a press conference and interrupt. Padilla was removed from the June 12 event after he pushed against law enforcement officers who blocked him and shouted, 'I'm Senator Alex Padilla! I have questions for the secretary!' He appeared on MSNBC to respond to Vice President JD Vance, who last week referred to him as 'Jose' Padilla and accused him of 'pure political theater' in his protest of Trump administration immigration enforcement policies. 5 Sen. 'Part of our job is oversight and accountability — exactly what this administration does not want, and so they will try to throw any hurdle, any roadblock, to keep us from our oversight and accountability role. That's all I was doing, right?' the Democrat said 'That press conference, as you know, I did not barge in. I was escorted in. I did not lunge at the secretary… I had the audacity of trying to ask a question,' he said. 5 Democrats have denounced Padilla's brief detention. via REUTERS 'I heard there was this press conference, asked to join, they opened the door for me and I sat quietly on the side until the rhetoric compelled me to speak up — not just as a senator, but as an American,' Padilla added. 'Just the notion that they're suggesting that it's their job to liberate Los Angeles from our duly elected mayor and governor. It is too much.' The previously little-known senator was appointed to his position in 2021 by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) to fill the vacancy created by Kamala Harris becoming vice president. He was elected to a full six-year term in 2022.

Tech tycoon's superyacht lifted from water off Italy
Salvage experts have hauled UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch's superyacht from the water and plan to take it to a Sicilian port for inspection, 10 months after it sank off the coast of Sicily, killing Lynch, his teenage daughter and five others. Work had resumed at first light on Saturday, with one of the most powerful maritime cranes in Europe used to haul the 56-metre-long Bayesian from beneath the waves. The Bayesian's upper decks appeared badly damaged while the blue hull was encrusted with mud after it had lain on the seabed at a depth of 50 metres. Italian authorities in the nearby port of Termini Imerese will have a chance to inspect the luxury yacht next week as they seek clues into a tragedy that has puzzled maritime experts. The Bayesian was moored off the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, in August last year when it sank during a sudden storm. The yacht was vulnerable to violent winds and was probably knocked over by gusts of more than 117 km/h, an interim United Kingdom report said last month. The salvage team, led by UK company TMC Marine, pumped sea water out of the hull and the vessel was held in an elevated position, surrounded by pollution containment booms, while further checks were carried out. "This was a complex and precise lifting operation to recover Bayesian, and followed a step-by-step program of salvage work," said Marcus Cave, a director of TMC Marine. The plan is for the yacht to be carried to port on Sunday before it is lifted on Monday on to a specially manufactured steel cradle on the quayside. The recovery process has been made easier after the vessel's 72-metre mast was detached using a remote-controlled cutting tool and placed on the seabed on Tuesday. In addition to Lynch, founder of the software company Autonomy, his daughter Hannah, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and chef Recaldo Thomas were killed when the yacht sank. Nine other crew members and six guests were rescued.
