Darren McGregor focused on European journey with Hibs youngsters
Hibs Under-18 Head Coach Darren McGregor believes that his squad of league champions have the potential to star for the First Team but he will remain focused on an exciting European journey while attempting to retain their league crown.
The former Hibs centre-back oversaw an exceptional league campaign which included a 16-game unbeaten run to end the season.
'We're immensely proud,' McGregor told hibernianfc.co.uk. 'I'm obviously helped throughout the season by Boozy (Guillaume Beuzelin), Gareth (Evans), Big Scotty (Ross), all the backroom team, the sports scientists who keep people fit.
'To win any league, whether it's a youth or professional league, it takes consistency and diligence throughout the season. It takes looking after your body and doing all the things you need to do right, and I think the lads have done that.
'In football you're measured by what you win, whether that's right or wrong in academy football, but I think winning is developing the lads as well. I'm very conscious this is one step before the First Team, so getting them into good habits is basically my job.
'I'm just really proud of them for the start of the season to where they are now. Each individual, I think, in my eyes has definitely progressed and got better, so that's the main aim of the academy is to make players better and if I can get them winning games of football and winning leagues as well then that's even better.'
Starting off at Cowdenbeath and playing junior football with Arniston Rangers before making his first topflight appearance with St Mirren aged 25, the 39-year-old is able to bring a different view to academy football when it comes to discipline, drive and consistency.
'All the lads are talented in their own right, that's why they're at Hibs, they're in a professional academy and a lot of them have been there for many years, so they have the talent, but obviously talent alone will get you so far.
'To actually walk through the (First Team) door and stay in there, you need a really good work ethic and you need to be consistent and you need to deal with adversity and you need to deal with obstacles in the right manner and overcome them.
'I've had quite a mixed career in terms of how I managed to get into professional football and it's a lot different for these lads, so I'm just trying to use my experiences, along with others, to help everybody else become the best versions of themselves.
'I can remember our last (UEFA Youth League appearance), in many ways we exceeded expectations in getting to the third round. I remember every game, it was such a great experience for the 2004 group.
'I think Dean (Cleland) and others were amongst the squad a couple of times, so a couple in the squad have had a tiny taste of it. It's such a great experience and it's tremendous to play in Europe at such a young age. The lads fully deserve it. It's going to be hard and a challenge, but we look forward to it.
'I believe we've got a really, really strong group. I think these lads can go up against anybody to be honest, so it will be a great experience and, obviously, if we can win and get through to the next rounds then even better.'
McGregor is excited by the season ahead: 'As coaches you want to get the lads in, you want to come up with a programme to develop the players, because for a lot of them this will be what they've dreamt of since we came into the academy.
'We've got a good batch of new intakes, so that's in a sense a wee bit of a dream come true for a lot of these lads, so we just need to make sure that we instill the character traits that we think are required to become a professional football player. A lot of the players have got them, but we just need to polish them up and make them even better.'

Hundreds wave off Wales as they head to the Euros
Hundreds of people gathered at Cardiff Airport today (Sunday, June 21) to wave off Wales as they flew to Portugal for their training camp ahead of the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 tournament. The Euros, which will be held in Switzerland next month, will be the squad's first major tournament. Wales kick-off their campaign against the Netherlands in Lucerne on July 5. Their remaining two games are in St Gallen with France on July 9 and against reigning European champions England on July 13. Football fans of all ages cheered Rhian Wilkinson's squad on at the airport just days after the selected 23 players were announced on the top of Yr Wyddfa, Wales' highest mountain. Speaking amongst the crowds ahead of the journey to Switzerland, Jess Fishlock - former Wales Captain and all time highest goal scorer - said: "It's huge, it's so nice that they [the fans] came out and hopefully we are an inspiration for them and their future and it shows how much support we have from the nation. "I'm super excited, I think today it has finally hit home what we are doing and I just can't wait to get there. "This is the best moment of my career, no doubt about that, and I am just excited to go on the big stage with my Welsh girls." Of those announced in the squad on Monday was Sophie Ingle who has been out since September with an injury. The 33-year-old damaged her anterior cruciate ligament whilst playing for Chelsea in a pre-season friendly. Ingle who has won 141 caps and led Wales 83 times from 2015 to 2024 before stepping down from the role – has been in a race against time to make next month's Euros in Switzerland. Last month Wilkinson rated the former Wales captain as '50-50' to play at the Euros, saying she 'wanted her back but not at the risk of Sophie Ingle's knee'. Wilkinson's 23-strong squad for Wales' first major tournament includes a few surprises. Defender Rhiannon Roberts is included after injury ruled her out of Nations League action last month, and veteran forward Jess Fishlock is the star name in a squad skippered by her Seattle Reign team-mate Angharad James. The former Everton and Tottenham midfielder is one of four centurions in the squad, alongside Fishlock, Ingle and Hayley Ladd. Aston Villa goalkeeper Soffia Kelly, Manchester City defender Mayzee Davies, Bristol City forward Tianna Teisar and Manchester United striker Mared Griffiths miss out after being in the squad for last month's Nations League games against Denmark and Italy. The 18-year-old Davies suffered a rupture to her ACL against Denmark and faces a considerable spell on the sidelines. But there's another rising Dutchman breaking through who could be on track to emulate his dad - who was capped 19 times for the Netherlands, scoring three goals. Hibs boss David Gray has addressed his team's chances of retaining cult hero Rocky Bushiri as he prepares to welcome half a squad of international players back to East Mains for pre-season training. And the Easter Road gaffer has outlined the club's search for a striker following the departures of Dylan Vente, Mykola Kuharevich and Dwight Gayle. Bushiri is effectively a free agent after allowing his contract to expire at the end of the campaign. But Hibs have kept talks with the Democratic Republic of Congo international going over the summer – and appear to be closer to agreement on a new deal for the centre-half, a huge figure in last season's spectacular turnaround in fortunes. He's another one that had a fantastic season. 'He'll be another one that's enjoying a little bit of a rest just now because his season, as you just touched on, was prolonged. He went away with his national team, did well there. 'I'm not sure where he is right now in the world! He'll be resting somewhere because the expectation is all the international players get slightly longer.' Will Easter Road club bring in more than one striker? The return of Bushiri is seen as crucial by Gray, who has placed great store on keeping his squad together after they climbed from the relegation zone to clinch third place in the Scottish Premiership. At the other end of the park, meanwhile, Hibs are on the hunt for at least one striker – for starters. Asked if the departure of Vente merely accentuated the need to recruit another striker, Gray said: 'Yeah, we're still working hard. It does obviously show that this is an area of the pitch we need to bring bodies in. 'But it's not just a body you want. You want someone who's going to add to the group and strengthen and compensate for other areas in which we maybe not got. 'So, you look at what we've already still got in the building. You've got Kieron Bowie. Physically, he's going to really benefit from a real good pre-season. We know how effective he was last season. Having him here for the start of the season is brilliant. 'It's now about adding to the squad and getting that strength in depth. And it shows how valuable that was for us last season, Gayle coming off the bench and having a massive impact on the amount of games he played. So, we are looking to make sure we've got that strength in depth. 'I think it's just the position, when you look at that. I think obviously Gayle has moved on. He's retired. 'I should have mentioned how well he'd done for us last season. Not just on the pitch, off the pitch stuff with him as well. He was fantastic for the group. That's something we always want to try and protect and make sure we do bring the right type of people in.' Asked if he'd be looking for more than one centre forward in the summer window, Gray said: 'I think it's all about looking. You want to get one in the door first to see what that looks like. 'We've all got targets in different areas and what they're going to bring to the table, and I think it's a case of managing that whole situation. But right now, you need to get the first one in and see what that looks like - and then adjust from there accordingly. 'Clearly, we had players that played a lot of games last season, the loan players. You had Myko and Nectar Triantis, who both played a lot of games. 'And like I said last season, it's not just a case of bringing in a number. We need to make sure we strengthen the group. Club owners continuing to back gaffer in transfer market Insisting the club turning a profit on Vente shouldn't impact his activity in the market, Gray said: 'I think the budget has been set for a long time now. And one thing I've always said is the support and the backing for the Gordon family has always been there - and will continue to be there.
