‘Sabah needs policy-oriented leadership, not power plays'

Kota Kinabalu: The people of Sabah need leadership driven by policies and solutions, not endless political manoeuvring, said Sabah DAP Chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe). He said it is time for politicians to move away from obsessing over seat allocations and, instead, concentrate on offering clear policy alternatives to address Sabah's longstanding challenges.

Speaking amid speculation over Sabah's coming state election and Pakatan Harapan's (PH) position within potential alliances, Phoong stressed that DAP remains committed to results-oriented governance. 'As a party, we believe trust must be earned through policies that work, not promises or power struggles. Sabahans want better infrastructure, quality jobs and long-term development strategies, and we are here to deliver that,' he said. Speaking at a joint development agreement between Qhazanah Sabah Bhd and Bina Indah Development Sdn Bhd and Q-SME Halal Industrial Park launch, here, Monday, Phoong added that while PH continues to hold discussions internally and with other parties, the ultimate goal should be to present Sabahans with a viable, people-first leadership option. 'Any decision on cooperation or seat distribution must be based on what's best for the people, not individual ambitions,' he said. He also praised the unity and ongoing cooperation among the four PH component parties in Sabah, calling it a 'healthy platform for honest dialogue.' Phoong, who is also State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister, noted that DAP has shown its ability to deliver, citing his efforts in boosting industrial growth and promoting renewable energy investment. 'These are the report cards that matter. The people will judge us by our work, not by who we align with. We must continue proving that we are capable of fulfilling their aspirations,' he said. Phoong reiterated DAP's stance as a 'policy-driven party that works with the people and for the people.' 'Sabahans are ready for leadership that prioritises substance over show. Ringgit expected to stay defensive due to Middle East conflict

Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit is expected to stay defensive within a tight range next week, as traders and investors will continue to observe the military conflict in the Middle East, said an analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that the Israel-Iran war continues to take centre stage as the United States is still weighing its options to participate in the conflict. 'White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt indicated that President Donald Trump will make his decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks. The US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.22 per cent to 98.691 points. 'Apart from that, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data for May 2025 will also be released next week. On that note, ringgit could stay within a range of RM4.24 to RM4.25 next week,' he told Bernama. For the week just ended, the ringgit gave up its earlier gains at the beginning of the week as escalating geopolitical concerns spurred demand for the safe-haven US dollar. However, the market showed a slight sign of recovery at the end of the week, as some investors took the opportunity to return to emerging currencies due to the latest White House announcement regarding the ongoing Iran-Israel war. Advertisement The ringgit ended the week easier against the greenback, closing at 4.2505/2565 on Friday from 4.2435/2480 a week earlier. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit rose vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9245/9289 from 2.9448/9482 at Friday's close, went up against the British pound to 5.7356/7437 from 5.7482/7543 previously, but depreciated versus the euro to 4.9000/9069 from 4.8906/8958 at the end of last week. The ringgit traded mostly higher against ASEAN currencies. The local note declined against the Singapore dollar to 3.3088/3140 on Friday from 3.3077/3118 in the previous week, advanced versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.2/259.7 from 260.2/260.6 previously, and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 12.9727/9969 from 13.0807/1018 last week. Asean travel meet as yearly event mooted

Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew suggests that the inaugural Asean Travel Exchange 2025 (ATEX 2025) be made an annual event. She raised the subject to the applause of 500 delegates from 15 countries at the welcome dinner hosted by her at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru (Star) on Thursday. 'An event of this nature is conducive to promoting travel and cultural exchanges, making new connections, building rapport and strengthening existing ties among Asean member countries,' Liew said, while urging the President of the Federation of Asean Travel Associations (FATA), Datuk Tan Kok Liang, who was present, to look into her suggestion. For tourism growth, the Minister, who was the guest of honour, also proposed reciprocal visits among the 10 member countries, saying ASEAN tourism must seize new opportunities and create new adventures. Speaking to the delegates, Liew said: 'If it's your first time in Sabah, I encourage you to explore beyond the venue. From the iconic Mount Kinabalu, a symbol of strength and unity, to vibrant markets and islands full of life, Sabah welcomes you with more than just beauty; it offers unforgettable experiences. 'As Malaysia is the Chairman of Asean this year, ATEX 2025 serves as a reminder that our greatest strength lies in the unity of its people and purpose. Only Sabahans know state's woes: Masidi

RANAU: The people of Sabah must give full support to the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government because only local leadership understands the real needs of the state as well as the people here. Sabah Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) Deputy President and Karanaan PGRS Division Head Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said, as the state election looming, a new mandate must be given to the coalition in order to keep the prosperity going. Masidi highlighted the GRS government's achievements over the past 3 years despite various challenges. He noted that during the Covid-19 pandemic in September 2020, movement restrictions significantly impacted operations, but the government still managed to function effectively for nearly 4 years. He emphasized that the GRS government's achievements in 2 to 3 years were among the best in Sabah's history. Key accomplishments included increased government revenue, record-breaking public savings, and nearly triple the reserves compared to previous administrations. Advertisement Masidi who is also Sabah's Finance Minister was speaking when officiating the 2025 Annual Conference of the PGRS for the Kundasang, Karanaan and Paginatan Divisions that was held at the Dewan Masyarakat Ranau on Thursday. Regarding infrastructure, particularly water management, Masidi also addressed issues concerning electricity, roads and clean water supplies. He reminded the people that Sabah Electricity is not entirely under the state government, but it is more under the federal's Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). In regards to the road problem, he said that such problems have also existed during the previous administrations, but today more road network and upgrading has been done, despite not being noticed by the oppositions. Concerning water issues, he explained that previous administration's decisions to terminate water management contracts led to current problems and legal claims totalling around RM300 million in compensation. He announced new developments, including a water treatment plant in Ranau from the Nakamura River that will provide consistent water supply regardless of weather conditions. Towards that end, Masidi emphasized the importance of political stability and professional governance for continued progress. The conference concluded with a call for unity within the party and focus on selecting capable candidates for upcoming elections. He stressed that elections are not beauty contests but rather about choosing hardworking individuals who can drive progress.
