Two UNC baseball starters named finalists for top defensive award Can two UNC baseball star add a little hardware to their trophy cases?
The UNC baseball team found itself one win away from a second-consecutive trip to the College World Series, but after a 4-3 loss in Game 3 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional, watched its season come to a heartbreaking end.
North Carolina dominated Arizona in Game 1, 18-2 , then struggled on the mound in a 10-8 Game 2 defeat. Despite the Diamond Heels taking a late lead in Game 3, their bats disappeared ahead of a potential ninth-inning rally.
A major part of UNC's success throughout the Chapel Hill Super Regional came from two program veterans: starting catcher Luke Stevenson and starting shortstop Alex Madera. Stevenson mashed two hits – including a home run – and drove in four runners during a Game 1 domination. Madera hit 4-of-13 during the Supers, including a 2-RBI performance in Game 1 and 2-hit outing in Game 2.
Though Stevenson and Madera's hitting abilities garner most of their attention, their defense is amongst college baseball's best. On June 16, Stevenson and Madera earned finalist nominations for the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove awards.
The collegiate Gold Glove award, just like in the MLB, is presented annually to the top defensive players at each position.
Stevenson and Madera will discover if they're winners on Wednesday, June 18. The Diamond Heels are just one of two teams, along with UCLA (first baseman Mulivai Levu, shortstop Roch Cholowsky), to have multiple finalists.
Stevenson compiled a .996 fielding percentage, committed just four errors and recorded 987 putouts over his first two seasons in Chapel Hill. If Stevenson forgoes July's MLB Draft and returns to North Carolina for his junior season, he'll have a chance to further improve upon those numbers.
Madera, who transferred into UNC from Divison-III Arcadia University before the 2024 season, became a mainstay in the middle infield. Starting primarily at shortstop this season and at second base last year, Madera recorded a .982 fielding percentage (eight errors), 281 assists and 149 putouts across his Diamond Heels career.

Would new Giant Rafael Devers have played first for Boston? ‘If they would have asked me'

Rafael Devers met with the media for 15 minutes or so in advance of the San Francisco Giants ' game against his former club, the Red Sox, on Friday, and didn't say much more than he had when his new team introduced him Tuesday. Mostly, the left-handed slugger sidestepped questions about his time in Boston, including the obvious rift with the Red Sox's front office, and his willingness to play first base for the Giants — but not Boston. Except, at one point, he explained that had Boston broached the idea of playing first base at all during spring training, when they asked him to be the designated hitter, he would have done so, and he hinted that it was this lack of consideration that had soured things. 'I would say that I have put up some good numbers in Boston, and I think that I do feel that I have earned some respect,' Devers said, with Erwin Higueros interpreting. 'And if they would have asked me at the beginning of spring training, yes, I would have played' first base. He also shot down a Yahoo report that he had been mad at Red Sox utility player Kristian Campbell for volunteering to learn to play first; Campbell also has denied that was the case. 'I didn't say anything like that,' Devers said. Devers has been a third baseman throughout his pro career until moving to DH this spring. But, he said Friday, the Giants did not ask him about filling in at that spot while Matt Chapman recovers from a sprained right hand. 'That never came up,' he said. 'We have one of the best third basemen in the league, and when he comes back, we know that's his position.' Devers began taking grounders at first base after being introduced Tuesday. Former Giant Will Clark, a Gold Glove winner at first in 1991, was to begin working with Devers at the position on Saturday, but it will take some time. The team has been clear Devers won't play in the field until he's comfortable, fun as it might be to see him thumb his nose at Boston by playing the spot against them. 'I'm feeling comfortable, and like I said in the past, I mean, it's nothing that is not a position that you're going to learn how to play overnight,' he said. 'I just have to continue to practice.' The Giants didn't make the deal — which sent left-hander Kyle Harrison, reliever Jordan Hicks, 2024 top pick James Tibbs III and Arizona rookie league pitcher Jose Bello — for Devers' glove, but the team scored two runs in each of the first three games after he arrived. 'We will improve,' he said. 'There's a reason why they brought me here. We're going to improve. Our offense is going to get up and we're going to start winning more games.' Devers has been grinning pretty much nonstop since he arrived in San Francisco. Asked the last time he was this happy professionally, Devers smiled again. 'A long time,' he answered. 'I don't know how to explain it, but the feelings that I've had here, yes, I've been happy. I feel very relaxed now.' Briefly: Pitcher Justin Verlander was placed on the paternity list as he and his wife, Kate Upton, await the birth of their second child. Verlander is not expected to miss his next turn in the rotation. To fill Verlander's spot on the roster, infielder Brett Wisely was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.

North Carolina Reacts to Bill Belichick Announcement

North Carolina Reacts to Bill Belichick Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There's a lot of excitement surrounding the North Carolina Tar Heels, as head coach Bill Belichick is looking to come in and improve the program after it went 6-7 last year. He has not won a bowl game since 2019. Advertisement The expectations are high considering that during his time in the NFL, Belichick established himself as one of the greatest coaches in league history. Further, on Wednesday, he was named to ESPN's "NFL All Quarter Century team." It's certainly an impressive honor as the list comprises a total of 53 players and four coaches, all selected based on their production since 2000. It even drew a reaction from North Carolina, which commemorated the achievement with its own X post, captioned, "Congratulations to @Belichick_B on being selected as Head Coach of the @espn NFL All Quarter Century Team!" It's unsurprising to see Belichick chosen to represent the head coach spot, as he dominated in his 24 years with the New England Patriots (2000-2023), winning AP Coach of the Year three times. Advertisement During that time, he accumulated a 266-121 regular season record, went 30-12 in playoff matchups and helped guide the Patriots to nine Super Bowl appearances, winning six of them, which is the most for a head coach in NFL history. It also won't be the last time Belichick is recognized for his impact in the NFL, as he's eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026, where he is likely to be a first-ballot selection.
