, a 42-year-old Indian-origin Australian man, has been arrested after two years of multi-agency investigation for allegedly masterminding an international drug racket that smuggle 20 million illegal cigarettes and nearly half a tonne of drugs into Sydney, the Australia Today reported.
The racket involved cocaine concealed in cement bags, 280 kg of liquid methamphetamine and a network of "trusted insiders" at port facilities who helped the racked. The syndicate generated at least $443,000 in proceeds from selling illegal cigarettes on Sydney's black market alone.
Suspected shipment from Vancouver
In August 2024, the Australian police intercepted a consignment of 280 kg of liquid methamphetamine shipped from Canada's Vancouver.
Officers traced the illicit cargo to a clandestine cool-down operation in Riverstone and arrested two men who led the investigation to Singh. Further investigations revealed that similar shipments were coming from Panama, the UAE and during one operation police even swapped the cocaine with an inert substance.
150 officers raided Singh's property
Last week, more than 150 officers executed coordinated raised and Singh was apprehended outside a private residence.

Six associates—two of whom are Canadian nationals, 24-year-old Aman Kang and 31-year-old Mani Singh Dhaliwal—were also taken into custody.
Singh faces a total of five counts of importing a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs and illegal tobacco, two counts of dealing with proceeds of crime, and two counts relating to leading a criminal group.
If convicted, he could face life imprisonment. Kang and Dhaliwal each face charges of possessing a commercial quantity of drugs and participating in a criminal group. All suspects were denied bail during their initial appearances and will next appear at Downing Centre Local Court in July.
Singh's lawyer argued that his client should be released on bail because of his underlying health conditions and also as he is the sole breadwinner of the family.

Mathura man held for supplying drone to Naxals
Lucknow: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday arrested a key accused in a case related to a CPI (Maoist) conspiracy to revive its Northern Regional Bureau (NRB), which covers Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. The arrested accused, Vishal Singh, originally from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended from West Delhi. During a search of his residence, the NIA recovered multiple digital devices, including hard drives, pen drives, and mobile phones, along with other incriminating material. According to the NIA, Singh is an active member of the banned CPI (Maoist) and supplied a drone to the outfit's leaders in the Chhakarbanda/Panchrukhiya forest region of Bihar. He is also accused of providing technical training to cadres and participating in secret meetings with central committee members in Bihar's forested areas in 2019. The case registered in the NIA's Lucknow unit in 2023 pertains to a larger Maoist plan to reactivate its presence in North India through covert recruitment and support from urban operatives, including Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and front organisations posing as activists or student groups. These groups reportedly received funding from the outfit's Eastern Regional Bureau, mainly based in Jharkhand. In August 2024, the NIA earlier arrested Ajay Singhal alias Aman, the in-charge of the Maoists' State Organising Committee for Haryana and Punjab. Investigations in the case are still underway, said sources in the central agency.

After arrest of Uzbek women, cops conduct raids to nab surgeon, scribe
Lucknow: A day after two Uzbek women were found living illegally in a flat in Golf City who revealed that they had undergone facial plastic surgery to hide their identities, police have intensified probe into the suspected trafficking and sex racket involving foreign nationals, a cosmetic surgeon and a man posing as a journalist. Senior officers said that raids were conducted at multiple locations to trace the surgeon and the journalist, identified as Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana — two key suspects named in the FIR. While the surgeon allegedly performed multiple facial surgeries on the women to give them a "Russian look", Thrijin is accused of sheltering foreign nationals and running illegal spas in residential flats. "The two women are still under FRRO surveillance and have confirmed their identities. We have obtained leads on the flats operated by Thrijin Raj and the financial trail involved," said DCP (south zone) Nipun Agarwal. Employess at the surgeon's clinic in Ahimamau informed the police the doctor was on an extended leave. Meanwhile, Thrijin's apartment remains locked. Investigators suspect the two may have fled the city after the case came to light. Police have now zeroed in on two flats, allegedly leased by Thrijin using proceeds from the racket. "These flats were being used as illegal massage parlors where services were reportedly offered for rates ranging between Rs 3,200 and Rs 10,000," an officer involved in the investigation said. Officials are also in touch with agencies in NCR and other metro cities where similar rackets involving undocumented foreign nationals have been reported. "We are looking into financial links, travel histories, and past police complaints involving the accused," the DCP said. Police said that once the investigation concludes, the foreign nationals found staying without valid documentation would be deported.
