Londoners warned to keep doors and windows closed after 70 firefighters rush to Erith blaze
Families have been told to their keep doors and windows shut as a huge fire at an industrial yard continues to produce large amounts of smoke.
Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled the blaze on Manor Road, Erith, in east London.
Five cars, one lorry and a single-story outbuilding were involved in the fire.
London Fire Brigade said due to high amounts of smoke, residents in the local area have been advised to keep doors and windows shut where possible.
Crews received the first of more than 20 calls reporting the fire just after 4am this morning.
Fire engines from Plumstead, Erith, Bexley and surrounding fire stations were sent to the scene.
Crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended this incident and were able to bring the fire under control by 7am.
'Firefighters deployed a Hose Layer and High Volume Pump as part of their response, increasing the amount of water available for firefighting operations. A 32-metre turntable ladder was used as a water tower to help extinguish the fire from above,' London Fire Brigade said.
'The brigade also deployed a drone to provide the Incident Commander with a greater situational awareness of the fire.
'A number of cylinders were removed from the vicinity of the fire and cooled to an ambient temperature by crews.'

Man in his 20s dies after collision in Weston-super-Mare
A man in his 20s has died following a two-vehicle collision. Avon and Somerset Police said the crash happened at about 23:35 BST on 20 June in Uphill Road North in Weston-super-Mare. The force said a red Audi A3 was heading towards Uphill when it collided with a purple Mercedes C240 travelling in the opposite direction, near the junction for Moorland Audi driver sustained serious injuries and died in hospital on Saturday. Police said the Mercedes driver, aged in his 50s, was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or Road North was closed to allow for an investigation and recovery work but reopened on Saturday morning. Anybody who witnessed the collision is asked to contact the force.

Mother found stabbed after gas explosion ‘gave her life to the vulnerable'
A mother who was found stabbed following a gas explosion at her home in north London 'gave her life to helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged', her family has said. Annabel Rook, 46, was found fatally injured at a house in Stoke Newington just before 5am on Tuesday. Ms Rook worked for MamaSuze CIC, a charity she co-founded that supports refugee and migrant women, some of whom have fled domestic violence, through art and drama activities. In a statement issued via the Metropolitan Police, her family said they were 'struggling to come to terms with this terrible tragedy'. 'We have lost our beautiful daughter, sister, friend and mother. Annabel was a truly wonderful woman,' the tribute read. 'She touched the hearts of so many. 'She gave her life to helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged, whether it was in refugee camps in Africa or setting up MamaSuze in London, to enhance the lives of survivors of forced displacement and gender-based violence. 'We would really appreciate it if our privacy could be respected.' A 44-year-old man was arrested at the address on suspicion of murder, with police previously describing the victim's death as 'a domestic-related incident'. John Martin, artistic director of PAN Intercultural Arts, where Ms Rook worked with young refugees for 16 years until 2022, previously described her as 'a larger-than-life character' who joined the charity as an energetic volunteer. He said in a tribute: 'Annabel's energy brought a lot to the women and gave them new hope. This was her speciality, I think – a sort of a boundless optimism, a boundless self-confidence, which she transferred onto other people.' 'She spent her life – certainly the 10, 12 years that I knew her – fighting against violence to women, and the irony is that she then suffered from violence to women in the way that she died.' MamaSuze said in a statement on Tuesday that it was 'devastated by the loss of our beloved co-founder', who had treated everyone with 'warmth and kindness'. 'Annabel was a profound force for good in the world, dedicating her working life to supporting women survivors,' it added. Police were called at 4.57am on Tuesday after reports of a gas explosion with a person trapped inside the property. The front bay window of the property was completely blown out, with debris including plants, wooden shutters and glass scattered across the street. Two children, aged seven and nine, were taken to hospital as a precaution following the incident, but they are not thought to have been inside the home when the explosion happened. Six fire engines attended the scene.

Heatwave begins to lift across UK while thunderstorms and rain move in
Temperatures are set to cool off across the UK as the country is braced for more rain and thunderstorms into next week, according to the Met Office. The forecaster said temperatures would be around the high teens and low 20s from Monday, with thundery downpours expected in the South East. It comes after the country was hit by a heatwave over the weekend with a provisional high of 33.2C recorded, making it the warmest day of 2025 so far. 'There's a fresher feel, quite breezy as well so most places, high teens, low 20s for temperatures, and it stays quite showery tonight,' Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said. 'It does become very warm again in the South East around the middle of the week, so we could see high 20s again around Tuesday, Wednesday in the South East. 'But at the same time as that heat builds again briefly in the south and South East, we could see further thundery downpours for a time as well.' The cooler temperatures come after thunderstorms swept across parts of the country overnight, including north England and south-east Scotland. Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland saw 31.1mm of rainfall overnight and was among the locations that saw the wettest weather. On Monday, the South East will see the most sunshine and highs of up to 25C, Mr Petagna added. For the other regions, temperatures will be around the high teens and low 20s which is 'near-average' for the time of year, he said. Over the weekend, an amber heat-health warning from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) was issued, covering all regions of England. The mercury hit a record-high of 33.2C in Charlwood, Surrey.
