'Today, I announce my retirement from international hockey. It's a tough moment, but one every athlete must face one day. It has been the greatest honour and pride of my life to represent our country. Thank you for everything," wrote Lalit from his official X handle.
Hailing from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Lalit, who made his debut for India in 2014, eventually emerged as one of India's most accomplished field hockey players.
Despite an early setback in 2008—when a sting operation wrongly implicated him in corruption—Lalit was undeterred. With support from coach Paramanand Mishra and former captain Dhanraj Pillay (who secured him a place with Air India), Upadhyay overcame the crisis by rebuilding his career through sheer skill and determination.
A key figure in India's international pursuits, he helped the team clinch gold at the 2016 and 2018 Asian Champions Trophies, and the 2017 Asia Cup, where he scored four goals. He also contributed to medals in the 2017 World League Final (bronze) and the 2018 Champions Trophy (silver).
Upadhyay has amassed an impressive 179+ caps and over 40 goals across a decade-long national career.
On the Olympic stage, Lalit played a pivotal role in India's historic bronze-medal wins at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024—marking back-to-back Olympic podium finishes after a 52-year gap.
In recognition of his achievements, Lalit received the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2021. Off the field, he has served as a Deputy Superintendent of Police with the Uttar Pradesh Police since 2022.

Yashasvi Jaiswal faces scrutiny over slip catching as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma namedropped: ‘Can't lob 3-4…'

Had the visitors held on to their catches in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, Shubman Gill-led India would have had a significant advantage. The reliable slip cordon dropped several sitters. Even the tried and tested Ravindra Jadeja put down Ben Duckett at gully. However, it was Yashasvi Jaiswal who was the biggest culprit as he put down three catches, all of Jasprit Bumrah's bowling. Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar had also called out India's fielding, putting Jaiswal under the scanner for his lacklustre show. Had India held on to their chances, they would have easily gained a lead of at least 50-60 runs. Harry Brook, who scored 99 runs, was put down twice, while the likes of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope also got one life each. Jaiswal put three chances down – one each of Duckett, Pope and Brook. Speaking about how the first Test hangs in the balance, Broad said that if India are to get more than 300 runs in the second innings, they would be in the driver's seat. However, it was then that he spoke about India's fielding effort in the first innings. 'I don't want to look too far ahead in this Indian batting lineup, but anything over 300 with Jasprit Bumrah in your bowling attack, I think you'd really fancy it,' said Broad while speaking on JioHotstar before the start of play on Day 4. They can't lob three or four of them on the floor when you're trying to get 10 wickets to take a test match,' he added. 'Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are gone' While speaking about India's lacklustre performance in the first innings, which allowed England to post 465 runs on the board, Broad said Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had safe hands. He stated that the duo are now retired from Tests, and someone else needs to step up. 'That is going to be a really intriguing thing to look at throughout this series, that India's catching in the slipcord. Because Virat's gone, Rohit's gone, they were catching at 83-84 per cent,' said Broad. 'And you can't keep throwing balls on the floor if you're going to win test matches here in England,' he added. Speaking of the first Test, India gained a lead of six runs in the first innings, owing to Jasprit Bumrah's five-wicket haul. India then reached the score of 90/2 at Stumps on Day 3. In the first innings, India employed Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair in the slips while Ravindra Jadeja was positioned at gully.

Our Indian sportspersons, including those from Uttarakhand, are making the country proud,' he added. Earlier in the day, Padma Bhushan awardee, eminent environmentalist and founder of HESCO, Anil Joshi, met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at his official residence. The Chief Minister said that on this occasion, he had a meaningful discussion with him on important topics like environmental protection, green development, and the implementation of GEP in the state. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the CM said that the ongoing Kedarnath Yatra had become a confluence of the remarkable synergy between spiritual devotion and development in the state. Taking to X, CM Dhami announced that in a span of just 48 days, more than 11.4 lakh devotees have paid their respects at the revered Kedarnath shrine.' Describing the pilgrimage as 'a wonderful confluence of development with faith', the Chief Minister said the surge in footfall has not only strengthened Uttarakhand's spiritual landscape but also significantly boosted its local economy. 'This is not just a pilgrimage but has become a symbol of Uttarakhand's economic, cultural and spiritual prosperity. Hail Baba Kedar!' he said, sharing updates using the hashtag #CharDhamYatra2025. The annual Char Dham Yatra, which includes pilgrimages to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, is one of the most significant religious journeys in Hinduism. The state government has undertaken a series of infrastructure upgrades in recent years--including improved roads, helicopter services, and better accommodation--to ensure a safer and smoother pilgrimage experience for devotees. This year, the Kedarnath Dham has seen an unprecedented inflow of pilgrims, which officials attribute to both improved facilities and increasing spiritual interest. (ANI)
