10 ways to wear denim in a heatwave — from maxi dresses to jorts, here's how to look and stay cool
Denim is a staple in a majority of our wardrobes. However, jeans are probably the last thing you think of wearing when the temperature is skyrocketing. Tight-fitting, heavyweight and complete with plenty of buttons and zips, they aren't exactly a summer-friendly item.
However, there are plenty of different ways to wear denim outside of a traditional jean. While staying cool is obvs top of the agenda, summer is also a time to experiment with your style and try something new. As always, we're here to offer up plenty of outfit inspo, combined with practical tips. Let's get into it.
Maxi dresses were made for summer, but a denim fabric gives the longer silhouette an unexpected twist. Opt for a lightweight, 100% cotton denim where possible to ensure you don't get too hot. We love this wearer's cut-out Zimmermann style — another way to add some breathability.
Utility workwear is a vibe — and featured heavily throughout Resort 2026 collections, including Tory Burch, Stella McCartney and Courrèges. A cargo denim jumpsuit is a ready-made outfit. Choose a style with short sleeves and a baggy fit to make sure you stay cool and comfy. You could even go for a romper with shorter cut legs for ultra-hot days; Wrangler currently has some excellent options.
Midi skirts are everywhere right now — they're easier to navigate than a maxi (no tripping over) and more office appropriate than a mini. This wearer has leaned into the 90's aesthetic in a major way with her scarf belt and bandana.
Waistcoats worn as tops are another way to stay cool and look stylish. Because of the structured fit, you can also forgo wearing a bra — less layers to sweat through! The balance of this wearer's outfit, with the Agolde denim and silk slip skirt, is *chef's kiss*.
Short shorts are the must-have festival wardrobe item of the summer. While you can go classic with a blue frayed pair, why not mix it up a bit, like this wearer in her pastel green Ganni co-ord. Pair with knee-high boots and you're Glasto ready.
The humble denim jacket really comes into its own in summer. A light or bleached wash is perfect for this time of year, and adds an extra dimension to an outfit without adding too much warmth. Throw over your shoulders with any outfit.
Bubble skirts continue to trend, and while they're typically seen in a poplin or similar lightweight fabric, who's to say denim can't get in on the action? Take this wearer's light wash, mini style, worn with a loose-fitting T-shirt and trainers.
It's sleeveless season, and this is probably one of the best ways to wear denim in the heat. The high street is currently chock-a-block with sleeveless denim tops, including Cos, Next and John Lewis. While you could do a double denim set like this wearer, you could also pair with linen trousers or shorts for an easy, breezy combo.
Jean shorts, or jorts as they are more commonly known, have us in a chokehold. Dress up or down, wear them low slung or high waisted, but always keep the fit baggy. See our full guide on what to wear with them here, but shout-out to this heat-ready wearer who has styled hers with a flannel shirt (the perfect lightweight layering piece) and thong heeled sandals.
OK, so we said no jeans but…when else can you wear white ones, if not in summer? Lest we remind you that white reflects heat, so dressing head-to-toe in it is practically science. Make a contrasting statement with a bright and colourful shoe.

Beyoncé pens sweet note to Sir Paul McCartney
Beyoncé closed out her six-show run in London on Monday night with a heartfelt thank you to a music legend. 'Thank you, Sir Paul McCartney, for writing one of the best songs ever made,' she wrote in a caption on Instagram. 'Every time I sing it, I feel so honored.' Beyoncé is referencing his song 'Blackbird,' which she sings on her 2024 album 'Cowboy Carter.' However, she spells it 'Blackbiird.' Mario Lopez weighs in on deportations: 'Immigrants are what makes America beautiful' She called it a full-circle moment as the singer was wearing his daughter Stella McCartney's design while singing the song during the show. The Cécred founder then thanked her fans across the pond. 'Thank you, London, for creating unforgettable memories for me and my family,' Beyoncé said. 'Holla at 'ya when I come on tour again!' The 32-time GRAMMY winner's Cowboy Carter Tour continues to break records, even ones she previously held. Her six shows at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium received over 275,000 fans and 'grossed over £45,000,000 ($61,500,000 USD), making it the most tickets and highest gross for any artist in the stadium's history,' LiveNation explained in a press release. Taylor Swift surprises patients at children's hospital Beyoncé now holds the venue record for most concerts performed by any artist. Her 2025 tour 'surpassed the benchmark she previously set with five sold-out nights during her Renaissance World Tour in 2023, breaking her own all-time record for most performances by any artist at the venue.' The 'Crazy in Love' singer now heads to Paris, where she'll hit the stage of the Stadium in Saint-Denis, France on June 19, 21 and 22. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Beyoncé Closes the Cowboy Carter London Shows in Stunning Gold Fringed Chaps
Beyoncé has officially wrapped her London Cowboy Carter Tour shows, and what better way to close it out than with a Sir Paul McCartney tribute? For a performance of 'BLACKBIIRD,' which is her cover of the famous Beatles song, Mrs. Carter tapped the designer (and McCartney's daughter) Stella McCartney for a custom look. She wore a white bodysuit adorned with two blackbirds on the front (the word 'BLACKBIIRD' is also etched into the white fabric) and gold fringed chaps, handcrafted at the Stella McCartney London atelier. She topped off the look with gold heels, a diamond necklace, and diamond jewelry. The full outfit also included a white floor-length coat, a white cowboy hat, and aviator shades. Beyoncé posted several shots of her look on Instagram and even included a (very rare) caption to accompany the photos. 'Thank you, Sir Paul McCartney, for writing one of the best songs ever made,' she wrote. 'Every time I sing it I feel so honored. And it is a full circle moment to wear your beautiful daughter's design.' She went on to give a shout-out to London and tease her next tour. 'Thank you, London, for creating unforgettable memories for me and my family. Holla at 'ya when I come on tour again!' The pop star also brought the white coat and white cowboy hat combo out for another look, which was a stunning blue rhinestone jumpsuit with a bald eagle embroidered on it. (The coat had an eagle on the back, too.) She posted the outfit in another Instagram carousel, which also included a few other new fashion moments. In one shot, she's shown in an all-black outfit, wearing a corset, leather pants with lace detailing, a cowboy hat, a silver belt, and a veil. In another, she wears chunky tan belts as a top and pairs the look with denim shorts, a fringe jacket, white furry boots, brown gloves, and a hat that says, 'BNCNTRY,' which is a nod to her website where she's been posting personal and professional photos that honor her country roots. If you want to see all the incredible tour looks in person, there's still time to get tickets for the last few shows. Click here for more info. Beyoncé honoured Paul McCartney at final London show in a custom 'Blackbird' bodysuit
Beyoncé has said goodbye to London in true British fashion. On Monday evening, the Grammy-winning artist completed her six-day Cowboy Carter tour run at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The record-breaking London takeover, with six consecutive sold-out nights and over 275,000 tickets sold, saw the star in an assortment of flashy and unforgettable Western-themed looks. For the final night, Beyoncé paid homage to British icons—performing her cover of Blackbird (written by musical legend Paul McCartney and recorded by the Beatles) in a custom outfit inspired by the song's title and created by none other than McCartney's fashion designer daughter, Stella. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Stella McCartney (@stellamccartney) The custom Stella McCartney look consisted of a white tee-style bodysuit with two beaded blackbirds on the chest. Bey tucked her scoop-neck suit into a pair of belted, hand-crafted crystal fringe chaps that allowed her to sparkle all throughout her opening set. Then, she accessorised the look with complementing crystal necklaces and dangling diamond earrings. Following the final show, Beyoncé shared a heart-warming post about her Blackbird look on Instagram, where she discussed her 'unforgettable' experience in London.'Thank you, Sir Paul McCartney, for writing one of the best songs ever made. Every time I sing it I feel so honoured,' Beyoncé gushed. 'And it is a full circle moment to wear your beautiful daughter's design. Thank you, London, for creating unforgettable memories for me and my family.'The singer also hinted that fans might be in store for another tour following Cowboy Carter. 'Holla at 'ya when I come on tour again,' she ended the caption, leading fans to rejoice in the comments. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) It's clear that the London leg of her tour was very special to the singer. In a video circulating on social media from the final show, Beyoncé gets emotional during an endless round of applause from fans, appearing to tell the crowd, 'I don't want to go home.' And while Queen Bey has bid farewell to London (for now), the star continues her tour of Europe with a pitstop in Paris—kicking off her first show in historic fashion on Juneteenth.
