Mamelodi Sundowns to hijack Kaizer Chiefs target in transfer twist
Mamelodi Sundowns are wasting no time preparing for the 2025/2026 season, with the club setting their sights on Stellenbosch FC's standout defender, Fawaaz Basadien. While they've confirmed they won't dip into the special transfer window, closing on 10 June, for the FIFA Club World Cup, the league champions are already making decisive moves behind the scenes.
According to Soccer Laduma , Sundowns have surged ahead of rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the race to secure Basadien's signature. The left-back, recently crowned Stellenbosch's Player of the Season, currently features in the national squad for friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique. A source suggests he's now 'open to a new challenge, with Gauteng calling his name.'
Basadien's experience with Stellenbosch FC and Bafana Bafana makes him a valuable asset for Sundowns. His exposure to continental competition positions him as an ideal reinforcement for coach Miguel Cardoso, who is aiming to lead the club back to CAF dominance.
'Sundowns want Basadien,' confirmed a source.
'He's gained continental experience and fits what they need. Chiefs still think they have a chance, but what I'm hearing is that Fawaaz will join Sundowns.'
The pursuit signals Sundowns' intent to strengthen their squad with proven local talent, especially as they aim to build momentum after the Club World Cup.
With Basadien potentially arriving at Chloorkop, changes are expected in Sundowns' defensive line-up. Terrence Mashego is reportedly on his way out, despite news about the club triggering a contract extension clause. Stellenbosch FC have shown strong interest in the left-back, intensifying speculation around his future.
'So you saw the reports of Sundowns triggering (Terrence) Mashego's contract,' the source added.
'Also they got Divine Lunga, (Aubrey) Modiba, and the boy from Sekhukhune United (Asekho Tiwani). Now they want Basadien, where will he play?'
While some clubs scramble during the short transfer window, Sundowns are operating with quiet efficiency. Their early moves hint at a broader strategy to solidify their dominance in South African football and prepare for another strong continental campaign.
Their ability to attract a player of Basadien's calibre, while fending off Soweto giants, underlines their continued pulling power. If the deal is completed post-Club World Cup, it could prove one of the defining transfers of the upcoming season.
Should Basadien go to Mamelodi Sundowns with all the competition in his position?

'He shots or takes defender on': Chiefs legend praise Pirates star
Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has hailed Orlando Pirates winger Mohau Nkota following his impressive breakout season. The 20-year-old forward scored seven goals and added five assists in 39 matches across all competitions last season. His form has earned him a Bafana Bafana call-up earlier this month where he featured against Mozambique. Khumalo had praised Nkota's decision making especially when he is attacking with the ball. The Chiefs legend felt the Pirates winger was positive whenever he had to ball and would either shot or take on a defender. 'Listen. This boy, and every ball that he gets, it's whether he takes a shot or he takes a defender on,' Khumalo said, as per KickOff . 'He (Nkota) has never taken the ball backwards; he has never played anything backwards,' he added. 'He is always positive. His game is not negative. In every touch that he had, he was creating a final pass, taking on a player, or taking a shot.' The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana midfielder has also been impressed with another Orlando Pirates youngster. Khumalo has been a big fan of Relebohile Mofokeng since he made his debut for the Buccaneers two years ago. Nkota and Mofokeng have been a joy to watch for Pirates on the wings under Jose Riveiro. With Nkota already established, it remains to be seen how he will improve as a player next season. Springbok Sevens ‘A' side crowned champions at Rugby Africa tournament
Sebastiaan Jobb (with ball) helped lead the Springbok Sevens 'A' squad to glory at the Rugby Africa Sevens tournament in Mauritius at the weekend. The Springbok Sevens 'A' side beat Madagascar 26-12 in the final of the Rugby Africa Sevens at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius on Sunday afternoon to be crowned continental kings. The South Africans had enjoyed a tentative start to the tournament, with pool victories over Nigeria, Zambia and Burkina Faso on Saturday's first day. But they grew into the competition with every passing match, also accounting for last year's bogey team, Uganda on Sunday morning. They booked their place in Sunday's decider with a hard-fought 19-12 win over Zimbabwe's Cheetahs in the first semi-final, courtesy of tries from co-captains Mfundo Ndhlovu and Sebastiaan Jobb. That match was an extremely physical encounter that descended into an arm wrestle in the second half but the Springbok Sevens 'A' side – a blend of youth and experience – held their nerve, to prevail. The exciting Madagascar side had beaten Kenya in their semi-final to book their place in the decider. Ndhlovu had been a potent attacking weapon for the South Africans over the weekend, and was arguably the player of the tournament for Phillip Snyman's side. His class again shone through in the final, as did Jobb's and Ricardo Duartee's, with 'Tricky Ricky' often living up to his name in igniting South African attacks and dictating play.
