Mohd Khalid Ismail appointed new IGP
KUALA LUMPUR — Bukit Aman Special Branch director Datuk Mohd Khalid Ismail has been appointed as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), replacing Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, effective today.
The handover-of-duties ceremony took place at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol), witnessed by the Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and attended by the Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil as well as senior officers of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
Mohd Khalid, 60, has held various important positions in the PDRM Special Branch, including Chief of the Pahang Special Branch from May 25, 2018, before being appointed as the Bukit Aman Special Branch chief assistant director on Sept 6, 2021.
Saifuddin Nasution in a statement today said Mohd Khalid's appointment received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia in accordance with Clauses (4) and (5) Article 140 of the Federal Constitution, upon the advice of the Prime Minister and the recommendation of the Police Force Commission.
According to him, the contract appointment is for two years, starting from June 23 this year until June 22, 2027.
He said Mohd Khalid was a highly experienced officer in the field of intelligence and security since he began serving in the force on April 5, 1987, when he was assigned to the Special Branch at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, after completing the General Police Training in the same year.
'Mohd Khalid also has experience serving at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, contingents and overseas, and has held key positions such as Deputy Director of Special Branch I, Bukit Aman police headquarters, and Security Liaison Officer (SLO) London, United Kingdom.
'He was promoted to the position of Special Branch director on April 10, 2023, before mandatory retirement on April 8, 2025, and his service as Special Branch director continued after retirement and he was appointed on a contract basis starting from April 8, 2025, until now,' he said.
Saifuddin Nasution said that based on his extensive experience in the field of policing, Mohd Khalid possesses high competence and leadership qualities to carry on the continuity and responsibility of leading the team.
Mohd Khalid, who was born in Manong, Perak on April 8, 1965, holds a Master's Degree in Comparative Laws and a Bachelor's Degree in Law (Honours) from the International Islamic University Malaysia, as well as a Diploma in Public Administration from Universiti Teknologi Mara.
Saifuddin Nasution also expressed appreciation to Tan Sri Razarudin Husain for his dedicated service and contributions during his tenure as IGP since June 23, 2023.

JOHOR BARU, June 21 — A private sector retiree lost RM535,766 after allegedly falling victim to an online investment scam promoted via an advertisement on the Facebook application. Seri Alam District Police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the police received a report from a 57-year-old local man on Tuesday, who claimed losses exceeding RM500,000. He said the victim had come across a share investment advertisement on Facebook on March 13 that promised lucrative returns within a short time, and clicked on the provided link out of interest. 'Subsequently, the victim made 26 payment transactions into five different bank accounts between March 13 and June 5, totalling RM535,766. The victim was also asked to make additional payments to withdraw the so-called 'investment profits', but those requests were never fulfilled,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Sohaimi said the victim only realised he had been duped after repeated attempts to recover the investment funds proved futile. 'Preliminary checks via the CCID's 'Semak Mule' platform found that all five accounts involved had a total of 22 police reports linked to investment scams,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and police are also looking into the possible involvement of mule account holders. — Bernama

‘Vandals took over the airport': State of emergency declared in Panama as protests escalate
PANAMA CITY, June 21 — Panama yesterday declared a state of emergency in western Bocas del Toro province, where anti-government protesters are accused of setting fire to a baseball stadium and looting businesses, including a provincial airport. The protests, which erupted two months ago in Bocas del Toro — a major banana-producing region — intensified this week, culminating in clashes with police that left one person dead and around 30 people, including several officers, injured, the police said. Over 50 people were arrested over the unrest. The clashes came after a huge police contingent was deployed to try to clear roads that protesters had blocked with tree trunks for weeks. Malaysia's police force gains global recognition for counterterrorism efforts, says home minister
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — The Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) capability in tackling terrorism threats has not only been recognised at the regional level but also by global powers such as the United States, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said this was evident in the trust placed by the US in PDRM's expertise to carry out the rehabilitation of two Malaysian detainees previously held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. 'This shows that in this particular case, the PDRM's Special Branch possesses expertise and competence that convinced a major power like the United States. 'It means we can stand as equals in efforts to address terrorism threats so they do not pose a danger within our own country,' he said during the handover ceremony of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) post at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here today. Media reports previously stated that the US had repatriated two Malaysian citizens in December 2024, after they had been detained at Guantanamo Bay for 18 years. The two individuals involved, Mohammed Farik Amin, 49, and Mohammed Nazir Lep, 48, are currently undergoing a comprehensive rehabilitation process that includes social support services, welfare assistance, and health screening before being reunited with their families. Saifuddin said it was crucial for the country to have a capable IGP, such as the 14th IGP Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, who played a key role in the repatriation of the two men.
