KZN bus shooting: Driver dead, pregnant passenger wounded
A bus driver was killed, and his conductor and a five-month pregnant woman were injured in a shooting in Redcliffe, near Verulam in KZN, last night.
The Witness reports that Prem Balram, the spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), said members of Rusa and the Verulam SAPS Crime Prevention Unit arrived on the scene shortly after 18:00.
'First responders were informed that two suspects boarded the bus on the corner of Orchid and Redcliffe Drive. The gunmen thereafter produced firearms and randomly opened fire before they fled on foot. They did not steal anything of value.'
Balram said the driver and conductor were taken to hospital before the arrival of reaction officers and police.
'The driver was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the medical facility. The extent of his colleague's injuries are unknown. The 26-year-old pregnant female was seated on the side of the road.
'She was shot through her right thigh. She was stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital in a stable condition,' he said.
Balram added that the motive for the shooting is unknown.

The case was postponed to allow the fifth suspect, Thabang Isaac Hlophe, to secure legal representation after joining the other four. Father Samuel Mogowe, Lucky Sikhosana, David Madisha, and Sello Skhalo Uoane previously abandoned their bail applications. Court appearance for formal joinder The five accused, who appeared in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on Friday, are facing two counts of kidnapping and murder each. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said Friday's court appearance was for the formal joinder of Hlophe to the matter and a possible bail application on his behalf. 'However, the application did not proceed as Hlophe opted to appoint a private attorney to represent him,' Nyuswa said. All suspects have been remanded in custody. 'The [NPA] condemns acts of violent crime and remains resolute in pursuing justice for victims,' Nyuswa said. 'One of those arrested is said to be a mechanic who builds and fixes cars in the KwaMhlanga area. Two VW Citi Golfs that were found in possession of the suspects have been seized,' Mathe added. Remains and DNA confirmation Skeletal remains with gunshot wounds, believed to be of the missing couple, were discovered in Rust de Winter along the Limpopo-Gauteng border in May after the suspects identified the location. Earlier this month, police confirmed that DNA analysis positively linked the remains to Ndlovu and Mdluli. 'The human remains were analysed and matched with the reference sample of the biological relatives of the deceased. A positive DNA match thus confirms that the discovered remains are those of the missing couple,' Mathe said at the time. Elderly woman brutally murdered, found in bathtub in Pretoria-Moot
An 81-year-old woman was found brutally murdered in her Pretoria-Moot home on Tuesday, sparking a swift and intense police investigation. Pretoria Rekord reports that, within 12 hours, detectives arrested two suspects, one of whom was caught with the victim's belongings. According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, members of the Pretoria Moot SAPS responded to a call for police assistance at a local residence on Tuesday morning at around 10:00. 'Upon arrival, officers met with a security officer who had been contacted by a woman affiliated with a local NGO providing social support services. The woman explained that she regularly visited the 81-year-old female resident to assist with laundry and provide food support, as the elderly woman lived alone.' He says that on the morning in question, the NGO worker was surprised when her visit was answered by an unknown coloured female, who claimed the elderly resident was unwell and had taken medication to rest. 'Although unsettled, the NGO worker accepted the laundry handed to her and left. Her concern prompted her to contact the security officer, requesting a welfare check at the residence.' Van Dyk says police officers proceeded to the address. 'The front door was locked, and after failed attempts to gain entry, officers moved to the rear of the house, where they found the back door open. 'Inside, the home had been ransacked. Bloodstains were visible in the main bedroom, and in the bathroom, the body of an elderly white female was discovered in the bathtub, partially submerged in water with visible blood.' He adds that emergency medical services were summoned and, upon arrival, declared the woman deceased. 'Crime scene experts were immediately called to process the scene. 'Pretoria Moot detectives began their preliminary investigation and obtained a description of a possible suspect. Informers were activated to assist.' Van Dyk adds that later that evening, at around 21:30, informants notified detectives that a possible suspect matching the description had been seen in the area. 'Detectives swiftly responded and traced a woman accompanied by her boyfriend on a nearby street. Upon searching the pair, police recovered several items belonging to the deceased.' Both suspects were arrested on the scene and detained for murder. 'Further investigation led to the recovery of additional stolen items at locations where the suspects had allegedly sold them.' Major-General Samuel Thine praised the investigating team for their swift and committed response, ensuring that justice was served within 12 hours of the incident. Video: 2 boys' bodies found after suspected drowning near Ekurhuleni construction site
The bodies of two young children were discovered this morning in a body of water, near a construction site in Duduza, Ekurhuleni. According to an article published by African Reporter, William Ntladi, Disaster & Emergency Management Services media liaison officer, said they responded to a call at 08:00 of a possible drowning. 'We searched where it was believed the boys were. We managed to retrieve two bodies. The children are believed to be around 10 and 11 years old,' he says. Eyewitnesses report that the children had been missing since yesterday, causing significant concern among their families and the local community. Preliminary indications point to drowning as the cause of death. Community members are urged to co-operate with law enforcement and provide any information that may assist in determining the cause of this tragedy.
