Szocs leads from the front as U Mumba clinches maiden title

The Hindu6 days ago

U Mumba TT didn't have much time to recover after a thriller of a semifinal on Saturday night.
The draw ended up being extremely challenging against it. Still, U Mumba overcame all the challenges to lay its hands on the coveted Ultimate Table Tennis trophy for the first time by polishing Jaipur Patriots off 8-4 in the summit clash on Sunday.
Riding on an all-round performance — with captain Bernadette Szocs leading from the front — U Mumba controlled the final ever since Lilian Bardet bounced back after conceding the opening game to Patriots' captain Kanak Jha. The convincing win meant U Mumba was richer by ₹60 lakh, with Patriots getting ₹40 lakh for the runners-up spot.
The semifinalists — Dempo Goa Challengers and Dabang Delhi TT — each received a cheque worth ₹17.50 lakh.
Despite Jha being an overwhelming favourite to put Patriots in charge, Bardet gained control and his audacious winners forced the former into errors.
Once he put U Mumba in lead, Szocs doubled the advantage by avenging her league stage loss to Sreeja Akula, the only unbeaten player in the tournament.
Besides her heavy forehand topspins, it was world No. 12 Szocs' ability to block Sreeja's powerful forehand winners that turned out to be the difference.
At 4-2, Szocs remained in the arena with Akash Pal — India's best doubles player — joining her.
The duo eased past Jeet Chandra and Britt Eerland with a clean slate.
The highlight was Pal's side-spins from the back of the court and exceptional down-the-line winners he produced. It put U Mumba on the cusp of a triumph, leading 7-2. All that was required of P.B. Abhinandh or Yashaswini Ghorpade was to snatch a game off their senior opponents.
Calculated risks
While Jeet's calculated risks paved off in the first two games, Abhinandh — who wasted a 6-2 lead in the second — was exceptional with his serves in the third to close out the game and with it the tie.
It meant Yashaswini, the star of Saturday's great escape against Goa Challengers, entered the arena only to join in the celebrations.
The result: U Mumba TT bt Jaipur Patriots 8-4 (Lilian Bardet bt Kanak Jha 4-11, 11-5, 11-7; Bernadette Szocs bt Sreeja Akula 11-9, 10-11, 11-5; Szocs & Akash Pal bt Britt Eerland & Jeet Chandra 11-6, 11-5, 11-5; P.B. Abhinandh lost to Jeet Chandra 5-11, 8-11, 11-8).

Stefon Diggs makes bold runway debut at PDF.Channel's SS26 show in Milan, celebrating Black dandyism with iconic style

Stefon Diggs makes bold runway debut (Image credits: Complex Style/Instagram) NFL star Stefon Diggs lit up the Milan runway at SS26 show, blending bold fashion with Black dandy elegance. But as cameras flashed in Italy, storm clouds swirled back home—thanks to contract drama, injury concerns, and a viral yacht video. His debut arrives at a high-stakes moment, straddling fashion buzz and NFL headlines—commanding attention far beyond the football field. Dandy vibes and designer swagger in Milan At vibrant SS26 showcase, Diggs turned heads with a velvet jacket, crisp tailoring, and sleek accessories. Inspired by late '70s and '80s Black dandyism, his look channeled pride, heritage, and elegance. At the runway's end, Diggs held his pose with calm confidence, exuding part swagger, part statement. The flashbulbs captured more than a walk—it felt like a cultural performance wrapped in style. Fashion bloggers praised the debut: 'Diggs oozed confidence and authenticity. Easily one of the best athlete runway moments in years.' Social feeds called it 'a cultural moment, not just a fashion one,' with fans praising his poise and presence. NFL uncertainty looms behind the glamour Back in the U.S., Diggs faces scrutiny after a now‑viral yacht video surfaced showing him with Cardi B and a suspicious pink substance. While no official violation has been confirmed, the footage has stirred speculation. His current Patriots deal—a $69M contract with roughly $26M guaranteed—could be jeopardized if he fails a full physical or is found in breach. Coach Mike Vrabel urged 'great decisions on and off the field,' when asked about the footage. Fans torn between style and sidelines While fashion insiders applauded Diggs' Milan moment, NFL fans voiced split opinions online. One user on X (Twitter) wrote, 'I love this for Diggs—NFL stars need to embrace style like this more often.' But Reddit threads leaned cautious, 'Stefon Diggs at 31 coming off an ACL injury—really hope this works out.' And regarding the viral yacht clip, 'Unidentified pink substance? Not a good look this close to training camp. ' Also read: 'C***ne is a hell of a drug': Stefon Diggs slammed for wild wedding dance amid ACL recovery and Cardi B drama Though Diggs has resumed participation at OTAs, full clearance is still pending post-ACL surgery. Watch: Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski break the Super Bowl trophy during chaotic mishap fans never saw coming

Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski break Lombardi Trophy (Getty Images) The Javits Center in New York came alive this weekend as Fanatics Fest 2025 kicked off with an electric start. The three-day mega event, running from June 20 to 22, transformed the convention center into a sports lover's playground. With legends like Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, LeBron James, Derek Jeter, Kevin Durant, and Peyton Manning sharing the spotlight with celebrities like Travis Scott and Kevin Costner, the atmosphere was a perfect blend of athletic nostalgia and Hollywood flair. Fanatics Fest goes viral as Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski break Lombardi Trophy in wild mishap Day one belonged to Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. The former Patriots and Buccaneers duo reunited in front of an enthusiastic crowd, determined to rekindle the playful chaos that once defined their partnership. And boy, did they deliver—just not quite as expected. In an attempt to recreate their iconic 2020 Super Bowl boat parade moment, Brady took a replica of the Lombardi Trophy and searched the crowd, locking eyes with someone he thought was Gronk. Surrounded by fans dressed in his iconic No. 87 jersey, the real Gronkowski stepped forward just in time to receive the throw. He caught it—but the landing wasn't flawless. The top of the trophy remained in his hands while the base broke clean off and hit the floor. 'You broke it,' Brady exclaimed, clearly stunned by the mishap. 'You are washed up. I'm going home.' The moment, which was caught on camera and instantly spread across social media, became the defining viral clip of the day. The playful banter didn't end there. Brady had earlier made a WWE-style entrance, even ripping up an Eli Manning jersey. In a moment of friendly retaliation, Manning tackled him in the hallway, evoking memories of their long-standing rivalry. Yet, instead of tension, the two were soon seen tossing passes to each other, proving that this festival was more about camaraderie than competition. But the trophy toss wasn't just a comedic stunt—it highlighted the legacy of a duo who helped shape an era of NFL dominance. Brady and Gronkowski played 11 seasons together, combining for over 9,200 yards and 93 touchdowns. They weren't just teammates—they were a dynasty. Their chemistry brought four Super Bowl titles, five trips to the big game, and six AFC Championship appearances. Gronk, despite battling numerous injuries, remained a dominant force whenever Brady was under center. While head coach Bill Belichick and Brady are often credited as the backbone of the Patriots' 2000s-2010s dynasty, Gronkowski's contributions were equally significant. Drafted in 2010, he instantly made an impact by catching 10 touchdown passes in his rookie season. With 92 regular season TD receptions and a record 15 in the playoffs (until recently surpassed by Travis Kelce), Gronk earned his reputation as the greatest tight end in NFL history. That's what made this reunion moment so surreal. To see the pair, now retired legends, still able to create buzz with a simple toss of a trophy—albeit a broken one—underscores their enduring popularity. Fanatics Fest is far from over, but thanks to Brady and Gronkowski, it's already scored a viral touchdown. Also Read: Not a spring chicken anymore? This Tennis Legend Keeps Ultimate Table Tennis Star Yashaswini Ghorpade Going. Not Sania Mirza

The Ultimate Table Tennis wrote a new chapter on the conclusion of its sixth edition as the tournament found a new winner. U Mumba gave a dominating performance and defeated Jaipur Patriots in the grand finale on June 15 in Ahmedabad and clinched their maiden UTT title. The entire Mumbai team performed like a single unit and did not even let Jaipur take a sigh of relief even for once during the match. With this performance, U Mumba etched their name in the history books of UTT. Although Yashaswini Ghorpade didn't feature in the final, her standout semi-final display epitomised U Mumba's collective strength this season. In the semis against Dempo Goa Challengers, U Mumba needed three victories in all the remaining three matches, in order to reach the final. However, Yashaswini held her nerves and defeated Krittwika Sinha Roy in the women's singles clash and took her side into the final. The 20-year-old played her first UTT season in 2024 with the Goa Challengers and went on to lift the title with them. In 2025, she was roped in by the U Mumba and surprisingly, she clinched the title again. Speaking to the media before the final, Yashaswini revealed that before the season, she was going through some tough time but she gathered herself back and gave an exemplary performance. "Last two-three months were quite difficult for me. Before this season, I was a bit down but things changed when I came here. It is amazing to be around many champion players and the team environment always lifts me up," said Yashaswini. While replying to a query from NDTV, Yashaswini also stated that tennis legend Roger Federer is her biggest motivation. "Roger Federer is my biggest motivation. I always sees his matches and even his workout and fitness routines to keep myself going. He is the biggest inspiration and I also want to achieve something like that," she said. Talking about the grand finale, wins for Lilian Bardet and Bernadette Szocs gave U Mumba an early lead, before Szocs and Akash Pal swept the mixed doubles 3-0 to take them to the brink. Teenager Abhinandh PB sealed the title with a clutch game win in the fourth match.
