Wales head coach Richard Whiffin says his squad head to the World Rugby U20 Championship believing they can "compete with so-called top teams".
Whiffin has named a largely settled selection for the tournament starting later this month in Italy, with Neath scrum-half Ellis Lewis the only uncapped player in a squad of 30.

Dragons scrum-half Logan Franklin was unavailable after injuring his arm in Friday's 47-19 final warm-up win against Italy in Cardiff.
Wales begin their campaign in Pool B against Argentina on 29 June in Verona.
Whiffin's side then face France on 4 July in Rovigo and complete the pool stage against Spain on 9 July back in Verona.
"I think it is a very balanced squad with some quality experience returning from last year and some added emphasis from guys who have performed well during the Six Nations," said Whiffin.
Wales placed eighth at last year's Championship. They finished third in this year's Six Nations with three wins, including victory against England.

Whiffin used more than 40 players in two preparation games - they were also beaten 47-14 by world champions England in Pontypool - before finalising his squad which will be captained by Dragons flanker Harry Beddall.
"The England game was always going to be tough on the back of what was a really tough training week, and then to challenge ourselves against the world champs was brilliant," said Whiffin.
"I thought it cemented a few thoughts in our heads - 14-14 at 60 minutes I thought we had competed well and then we had a very polished performance against Italy.
"We're excited about the Championship but we still have a week's training ahead of us before we get on the plane for Italy, but we've done the hard work in terms of whittling down what was a really strong training squad to the 30 selected."

Having denied England a first Grand Slam in four years with a 23-13 victory at Cardiff Arm's Park in this year's Six Nations finale, Whiffin also believes his squad head to Italy with no fear.
"I think the pleasing thing is the boys are confident and they know they can go out there and compete with so-called top teams in the competition and we're not afraid," he said.
"We're going out there saying we want to get into that top semi-final bracket and once you get into that bracket you never know what's going to happen."
Wales squad:
Forwards: Ioan Emanuel, Louie Trevett, Harry Thomas, Saul Hurley, Evan Wood, Sam Scott, Owain James, Jac Pritchard, Luke Evans, Kenzie Jenkins, Nick Thomas, Tom Cottle, Dan Gemine, Deian Gwynne, Harry Beddall (capt), Caio James, Evan Minto.

'Glad MMA can move on': Tom Aspinall, fellow fighters react to Jon Jones retiring, finally dropping UFC title
Tom Aspinall is finally the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. (Chris Unger via Getty Images) The seemingly endless saga of Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall is finally over. UFC CEO Dana White announced Saturday that Jones has elected to retire rather than fight Aspinall in blockbuster bout to unify the UFC heavyweight titles. As a result, Jones vacates his UFC heavyweight belt and Aspinall, the interim champion for the past 19 months, has been promoted to undisputed champion status. Advertisement The news marks a bittersweet end to Jones' bizarre heavyweight reign, which began in March 2023 with a first-round submission of Ciryl Gane and ultimately contained only one title defense — a November 2024 showdown against Stipe Miocic, who was 42 years old at the time and hadn't won a fight since 2020. After spending the majority of the past two years trying to convince Jones to face him, Aspinall now takes up the mantle as UFC heavyweight king having already almost cleared out the rest of the division's top ranks. The Englishman is 8-1 under the UFC banner, with his lone loss coming in a setback to Curtis Blaydes that saw Aspinall tear his ACL just 15 seconds into the match; Aspinall swiftly avenged that outcome upon his return with a 60-second destruction of Blaydes this past July to defend his interim belt. Advertisement In his first statement Saturday as undisputed champion, Aspinall posted a clip of White's announcement and promised fans that they'd finally get "an active undisputed champion." For you fans. It's time to get this Heavyweight division going. An active Undisputed Champion Considering how long the MMA world waited for resolution to the Jones-Aspinall situation, and Jones' standing as one of the most decorated — yet controversial — figures in the sport's history, it's not a surprise that his long-awaited decision prompted a flood of reactions from his fellow competitors. A sampling of those reactions can be read below.

First Test: England v India - Hundred hero Pope answers England's prayers as Bumrah strikes
Hundred hero Pope answers England's prayers as Bumrah strikes in first Test Ollie Pope made a defiant century as England fought back despite Jasprit Bumrah's three-wicket haul and a blistering hundred from Rishabh Pant for India on Saturday's second day of the first Test at Headingley. England were 209-3 in reply to India's first-innings 471 at stumps, still a deficit of 262 runs, with Pope exactly 100 not out after being dropped on 60. But they had been 4-1 when Pope came to the crease after a superb Bumrah delivery had Zak Crawley caught by Karun Nair off just the sixth ball of the innings. And after Surrey right-hander Pope reached his century, a gripping day of Test cricket ended with late drama involving two England batsmen on their Yorkshire home ground. Joe Root fell to Bumrah for 28 when he carelessly steered him straight to first slip and, in the last over of the day, it looked as if the fast bowler had dismissed Harry Brook for a duck when the rising star top-edged a needlessly aggressive pull and was well caught by Mohammed Siraj at midwicket. But the third umpire confirmed a no-ball to spare Brook's blushes. Bumrah ended the day with 3-48 from 12 overs, having taken all the England wickets to fall so far in the first of this this five-Test series. Arguably the world's best all-format bowler, Bumrah could have had even better figures but for dropped catches with the usually reliable Ravindra Jadeja putting down Ben Duckett at backward point on 15. Bumrah did dismiss the left-handed opener for 62 via an inside-edged a drive onto the stumps. But he had another chance missed off his bowling when Pope, repeating the steer shot that had taken him to fifty off the first ball after tea, was put down by a diving Yashasvi Jaiswal in the cordon. Pope went to 95 with a square-cut boundary off Shardul Thakur before an inside-edged single off Bumrah too him to a 125-ball century including 13 fours at an increasingly sun-drenched Headingley. India had threatened a total in excess of 500 earlier Saturday after Pant (134) joined opener Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill as one of three batsmen to make hundreds in the innings. But a collapse either side of lunch saw India lose their last seven wickets for 41 runs inside 12 overs. England captain Ben Stokes led from the front with an economical 4-66 in 20 overs, while fast bowler Josh Tongue wrapped up the innings on his way to 4-86. Pant head over heels India resumed on their overnight 359-3, with Gill 127 not out in his first innings since succeeding the retired Rohit Sharma as skipper, and Pant unbeaten on 65. Pant soon went to a hundred in stunning style, the wicketkeeper charging at Shoaib Bashir before hoisting the off-spinner high over deep midwicket for six despite one hand coming off the bat. The 27-year-old then celebrated his century with an acrobatic somersault. Pant's seventh hundred in 44 Tests, and fourth against England, came off 146 balls including 10 fours and four sixes in a typically aggressive innings. The pair were in complete command until Gill's mistimed pick-up shot off Bashir flew straight to deep square leg as the 25-year-old skipper fell for 147, having faced 227 balls including 19 fours and one six. Gill's exit ended a partnership of 209 in 49 overs with Pant that had taken India to 430-4 and opened the door for a flurry of wickets to give England hope. Pant, having played a succession of extraordinary strokes, was lbw offering no shot to Tongue before the paceman polished off the tail. - AFP 21 June 15:09 Shubman Gill marked his first innings as India captain with a sparkling hundred after fellow young gun Yashasvi Jaiswal also scored a fine century against England at Headingley on Friday. India - sent into bat by England captain Ben Stokes - were in the commanding position of 359-3 at stumps on the first day of the five-Test series. Gill was 127 not out after sharing a stand of 129 for the third wicket with opener Jaiswal, dismissed for 101 shortly after tea. The aggressive Rishabh Pant was 65 not out, including an extraordinary swiped six off Chris Woakes in the last over of a day. Pant ensured India continued to pile on the agony for England during an unbroken stand of 138 with his new skipper. Concerns had been expressed before the series about how India would cope in England without Rohit Sharma, Gill's predecessor as captain, and Virat Kohli after the two star batsmen retired from Test duty within days of each other last month. But such is the depth of talent in cricket-obsessed India, quality replacements were always likely to be available. And an England attack without retired greats James Anderson and Stuart Broad and missing injured express quicks Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, rarely threatened on a good batting pitch under increasingly sunny skies. Jaiswal and opening partner KL Rahul ensured India made a fine start to their quest for just a fourth Test series win in England after triumphs in 1971, 1986 and 2007. England, however, enjoyed a double strike shortly before lunch as India's 91-0 was transformed into 92-2. Rahul, on 42, drove loosely at a wide ball from Brydon Carse and edged to Joe Root at first slip. Moments later, Sai Sudharsan made a duck on Test debut when Stokes had him well caught down the legside by diving wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. But India's third-wicket duo regained the initiative with sublime stroke-play. The 25-year-old Gill was especially severe on Woakes, whose 19 wicketless overs cost 89 runs. Stokes brought on Shoaib Bashir to add variety but the off-spinner's first ball was cuffed for four by left-hander Jaiswal, who went to 99 with two superb boundaries off Carse. A quick single took an elated Jaiswal to a 144-ball hundred, including 16 fours, as he completed his fifth century in 20 Tests and third against England. It also meant the 23-year-old had scored hundreds on his Test debut, his first Test in Australia and first in England.T he hosts' wicketless session was summed up when Smith fumbled the ball onto a nearby unused helmet to concede five penalty runs. Jaiswal, however, was out shortly after tea for 101 when Stokes, from around the wicket, bowled him with a fine delivery that angled in and held its line. India, however, were still well-placed on 221-3, and the dynamic Pant set the tone by thumping Stokes back over his head for four off just his second ball. Gill completed his century with a superb cover-driven four off fast bowler Josh Tongue, his 14th boundary in 140 balls faced. As he admired the shot, a joyful Gill ripped off his helmet in celebration of his sixth hundred in 33 Tests and third against England. Gill later pulled Tongue over the head of Bashir at fine leg for six and was just shy of his highest Test score of 128, against Australia at Ahmedabad in 2023, at the close. Before play both teams and the match officials observed a minute's silence in memory of the victims of an Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that killed all but one of 242 people on board. - AFP 20 June 14:02 England bowl in 1st Test as India's Sudharsan makes debut England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to field in the first Test against India at Headingley on Friday. With the match starting beneath sunny, blue skies and the pitch only showing a tinge of green, conditions appeared good for batting in the opening match of this five-Test series. But Stokes, explaining his decision to bowl first, said: "Headingley is generally a good cricket wicket, we have had some good games here over the years so we will look to use the early conditions and get a bit out of it (the pitch)." England had already named their side, making two changes to the team that beat Zimbabwe by an innings inside three days at Trent Bridge. Experienced paceman Chris Woakes returns in place of the injured Gus Atkinson and fast bowler Brydon Carse makes his home debut. India gave a Test debut to Sai Sudharsan, listed to come in at number three with new captain Shubman Gill slotting in at number four. India are bidding for just a third Test series win in England following triumphs in 1971, 1986 and 2007, with Gill saying: "Preparation has been amazing, I think all the boys are feeling in a good space mentally and physically." This match, the first of five Tests in seven weeks, marks the start of a new cycle in the World Test Championship after South Africa beat Australia in last week's final at Lord's. Both teams wore black armbands in memory of the victims of an Air India plane crash in the western city of Ahmedabad that killed all but one of 242 people on board. Teams: England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (capt), Jamie Smith (wkt), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir India: KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (capt), Rishabh Pant (wkt), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna

It's just an amazing opportunity to go out here tomorrow and hopefully it's my time." World number one Scottie Scheffler, second-ranked Rory McIlroy and world number five Justin Thomas stumbled to fall well back, Scheffler and Thomas having shared the 36-hole lead with Fleetwood. Scheffler made his first triple bogey since last August, missing the first green from a nearby bunker, then finding the rough. Advertisement Last month's PGA Championship winner found water off the eighth tee on the way to a double bogey. Thomas, a two-time major winner, took a quadruple-bogey nine at the 13th, losing his tee shot into left rough and needing three shots to escape greenside rough, on the way to shooting 73 to stand on 204. McIlroy fired a 68 to stand on 203. He birdied four of the first eight holes, his longest putt among them from 11 feet at the fourth, before a double bogey at 12 dropped him back, taking four to reach the green after going long with his approach. js/bb
