Derry and Galway round-robin thriller ends in draw

BBC News01-06-2025

Derry and Galway battled to a 2-20 to 4-14 draw in their All-Ireland round-robin meeting in Celtic Park. Matthew Tierney scored a last-minute goal to put Galway one ahead heading into the final play of the match before Conor Doherty kicked an equaliser for Derry after the hooter. The Oakleafers will be disappointed that they let the game slip away after leading by eight points on two occasions. It was proper championship football over the first 35 minutes with no quarter given or taken and neither side taking a backwards step with so much on the line. The first quarter burst into life as Rob Finnerty got the final touch to a goalline scramble on fourteen minutes to give Galway a 1-2 to 0-4 lead. Derry replied from the very next attack with a fine passing move which ended in Conor Glass punching into the empty net for an immediate and emphatic response. The hosts grew in confidence and started to dictate play around the middle of the field with Paul Cassidy landing a two-pointer from play before Shane McGuigan knocked over a free from two-point range. The Tribesmen responded with a major as Shane Walsh turned Eoin McEvoy inside and out before finishing a fine individual goal with a strike into the net. Three more scores from McGuigan and Niall Loughlin had Derry eight ahead at the break.
Strong start from Derry undone in frantic finish
Paddy Tally's men emerged sharpest for the second half and reeled off four scores in a row with Loughlin, Glass and Ciaran McFaul all on target. Derry looked like they were about to secure a first win of 2025 when Lachlan Murray buried down the sideline and squared to Loughlin who punched into the net to again put his side up by eight.Peter Cooke hit a two-pointer in reply for the visitors who seemed to be wayward with their desperate two-point efforts. Padraic Joyce's men were given a lifeline with eight minutes to play as Matthew Tierney hit his first score of the game with a goal. Brendan Rogers pointed for Derry either side of efforts from Cein Darcy and Damien Comer to leave two between the teams. Time was all but up when Kieran Molloy tried an effort from way out which hung in the air for an eternity before it was punched to the net by Tierney who really made his mark in the final moments. There was less than thirty seconds to play when Derry mounted an attack in a desperate attempt to save a game they had looked sure to win. Their patience was rewarded right on the hooter as Conor Doherty secured a draw with the final kick off the game. It is all to play for heading into the final round of games in the group in a fortnight's time when Galway take on All-Ireland champions Armagh and Derry meet Dublin.

Derry City move 'too good to turn down', says Adam Frizzell as he opens up on emotional Airdrie exit

The midfielder is ready for a new challenge in his career after leaving the Diamonds Airdrie hero Adam Frizzell admits he got emotional after leaving the Diamonds this week, but says the chance of playing European football with Derry City is too good to turn down. The midfielder has called time on a four-year spell at New Broomfield after the League of Ireland Premier Division side managed to entice him overseas. ‌ While Scottish football is preparing to kick-off for another season, the Irish League is just over the halfway point in their campaign and Derry sit fourth, aiming to land a spot in the top three to secure Europa Conference League football next term. ‌ And that has proved too big a draw for the former Kilmarnock ace, who agreed to join Derry just days after tying the knot with wife Erin in Italy earlier this month. The 27-year-old, who will be officially unveiled in the next 48 hours, told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "It's very bitter sweet. Reading everyone's messages after the club announced I was leaving, I am gutted about it. I was a wee bit emotional. "It is a really close-knit, family club and one I hold close to my heart. "Airdrie is a club I love. I have been part of the furniture for four years. I have been doing coaching as well so I have got to know a lot of the staff and fans on a personal level. "It is really sad leaving, but this is something I can't turn down and my focus is on Derry now. "I just got married in the summer as well so there's a lot of big changes. I got married in Italy and we went to Venice for a couple of days after it, so we'll wait until the winter break in the Irish league to go on a proper honeymoon. ‌ "I've been trying to run off the pasta and wine for the past week, but I have been keeping myself in shape. "I said to them I'd go and enjoy the wedding and then see what happens after that. "When I came back, the opportunity presented itself and I had to go and challenge myself. ‌ "Now I want to get over to Ireland, get sorted and get my head down. That is my main focus at the moment." Derry are currently fourth in the League of Ireland, two points behind third place Bohemians, three behind Drogheda United (who have played two games more) and 14 adrift of leaders Shamrock Rovers. ‌ So Frizzell is looking forward to getting stuck straight into a new challenge and chasing a first taste of European football. He said: "I don't think a lot of people know much about the Irish league but it is very competitive. It is packed out every week and Derry is a club on the up, looking to play in Europe. "Derry are looking to get that second or third spot. They are halfway through the season and Shamrock have a wee gap at the moment. ‌ "When I spoke to their manager Tiernan [Lynch], he really sold it. I am really looking forward to a new challenge. "I just thought it was the right time for me. I am coming into what you would say are my prime years and it is something I had to jump at. ‌ "I have left Airdrie on good terms and who knows what can happen in the future. "But this is very exciting. I have done it the hard way to get here. After Kilmarnock I had a lot of injuries and I was on a bit of a rocky road to build myself back up. "I am so thankful for Airdrie helping me do that. I had four great years there. We won a trophy - something the club hadn't done for a number of years - and to do that as captain was a real honour for me. "It is no secret how much I love the club, but it is a chance for me to step up and potentially play in Europe. It is something I couldn't turn down."

Will Falkirk 'buckle' or could they aim for mid-table?

We asked for your views on Falkirk's Scottish Premiership fixtures and how they will be faring after 10 what some of you said:Alan: I think Falkirk will face their sternest test since John McGlynn joined and they will buckle. They will finish in the bottom three because they struggled against the two other Championship promotion contenders, Livingston and Ayr, last Seventh could be achievable. Still a couple of defenders short. Midfield looks competitive. Great in the wide positions, which will be key to get the goals To be honest, it's all about remaining in the league, not least for the commercial benefits, but also for the entertaining football Falkirk bring to all of their games. We know it's going to be hard, but we'll always be behind our club, win, draw or lose, and that's what it is to be a Bairn.

Irish village team play incredible line-up of football legends, with Champions League-winning hard man at the back, Everton hero up front and England star in goal

An Irish village football team picked a surprising opposition to play as they went up against a side featuring an incredible line-up of football legends. Ayrfield United FC, a local outfit based in north Dublin, pitted their wits against some of the very best as they faced a Premier League legends side including a Champions League winner, a former England goalkeeper and an Everton cult hero. The likes of Jaap Stam, David James, Jermaine Beckford and Yakubu were all part of the squad to face Ayrfield at their Blunden Drive ground on Saturday afternoon. Yakubu and Beckford rolled back the years as the former Toffees duo led the line and were seen together in a picture posted by one fan on social media. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the user wrote that Yakubu 'scored a vintage Yak goal'. In reply, a second labelled him a 'legend' upon seeing that he made an appearance in the match. Yakubu was remembered fondly for his time in the Premier League, where he scored 95 goals in 252 appearances during spells for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton and Blackburn Rovers. The Nigerian's final season on Merseyside was shared with Beckford, who played for Everton after a lengthy stint at Leeds United. To give as many local players as possible the chance to put their skills to the test, Ayrfield rotated three different line-ups across 30-minute periods against the legends side - who may have been blowing by the end of the 90 minutes. Posting to Instagram after the match, former Manchester United centre-back Stam thanked Ayrfield for being invited to play in the event. The Dutchman wrote: 'Great game. Lots of quality on the pitch with great support from the fans! Very enjoyable to be out there!' In reply, Ayrfield United wrote: 'Jaap you've still got it ya legend. Brilliant to have you here today. Thank you very much for coming'. Further comments of appreciation from fans read: 'What a day! Congrats to all involved'.
