My Dead Friend Zoe Review: Military PTSD Dramedy Elevated by Sonequa Martin-Green
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – My Dead Friend Zoe is a dramedy with a little more drama than comedy that centers on the issues of military servicemembers' struggles with PTSD, and it would risk becoming a drama overwhelmed by its advocacy without the stand-out performance by Sonequa Martin-Green.
Co-written and directed by Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, who is a US Army combat veteran, My Dead Friend Zoe is inspired by his autobiography, and the film has partnered with national nonprofits to raise awareness about veterans' mental health. The story centers on Martin-Green's character, Merit, a servicemember who returns from the war in Afghanistan with PTSD. Literally haunting her is Natalie Morales's character, Zoe, a fellow servicemember who has died. In addition to reckoning with the circumstances of Zoe's death, Merit must also care for her aging grandfather (Ed Harris) who has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease.
Sonequa Martin-Green carries My Dead Friend Zoe. As fans of Star Trek: Discovery know, she has an easy smile that also reveals her character's inner life, which is often filled with contradictions and different levels of emotional depth. Martin-Green delivers a performance honed with some deep psychology and background work that's not on the page, which had to have been developed in her preparation. One scene with her grandfather sees her adopt a military posture out of habit even though she's no longer part of the service, and the small moments of reaction shots reveal a full fleshed-out character. It's masterful work that saves the movie from melodrama.
That melodrama risks pushing My Dead Friend Zoe into an 'issue movie,' a film that advocates for an issue rather than unfolding a story organically. This is particularly the case during the third act reveal. The plot's structure hides the circumstances around Zoe's death until the third act, and there are long sections when it feels like the film is being too evasive. What's also true is that the film spins its wheels during the second act because it's biding its time until it can reveal to the audience something all the characters already know. Structurally speaking, this keeps the audience at a distance.
The film's direct advocacy occurs most prominently in post-credits scenes and in statistics right before the credits. It is only Martin-Green that keeps the issue from overwhelming the drama, as she anchors the film to the character's journey and lets the story speak for itself. Morales gives a strong supporting performance, but sadly, she's not given much to do aside from deliver some snarky lines and be a sounding board for Martin-Green's character in the movie's tearful conclusion.
PTSD and more broadly speaking, mental health advocacy is an important issue, and My Dead Friend Zoe makes for some successful advocacy work. However, it is Sonequa Martin-Green who makes it a good movie and a compelling character drama.

Country Star Makes Bold Statement About His Viral Cereal Moment
Country Star Makes Bold Statement About His Viral Cereal Moment originally appeared on Parade. It's been a few months since lit up screens with his 'Worst Way' music video, but if there's one moment that fans remember most, it's that the country music star loves his cereal. And that's saying a lot. 'Worst Way' is ludicrously sexy. Green and his on-screen lover eschew a romantic dinner—the salad goes flying!—to cut to the chase of making love. They nearly knock the paintings off the wall with the level of their passion. And they keep that absurd intensity up when they dine out, much to the bewilderment of the others at the restaurant. And yet, it's the closing scene that fans remember most. While his lover lounges on the counter in red lingerie, Green eats what looks like a bowl of cornflakes. And apparently, that's more true to life than the rest of the video. 'My friends make fun of me and say I eat like a kid 'cause I will eat cereal just constantly all day,' he said, per Country Now. 'I think probably Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the best cereal, but as an adult, I feel like I gotta eat something a little more healthy, so I go like a Honey Bunches of Oats.' Green also said that he enjoyed filming that scene a little too much and that they had to keep refilling his bowl. 'We had to reshoot it, so they wanted me to pretend to eat it,' he said, 'but I'll probably eat four bowls of cereal in that sitting.' The country singer said that 1988's Bull Durham was the main inspiration for the video, but that the original plan was a little more sincere. 'The first treatment they sent me, it made me turn red. I wanted to crawl under the table just reading it,' he said in an interview with Audacy. Knowing that he would be the one acting out these scenes of unbridled passion, Green decided to amp up the 'comedic relief.' "It's not really comfortable [to] shoot a music video like that, but it ended up being a lot of fun,' he Star Makes Bold Statement About His Viral Cereal Moment first appeared on Parade on Jun 20, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 20, 2025, where it first appeared.

Beyond The Gates Recap: Smitty Comes Dangerously Close to Upsetting The Dupree Apple Cart
Beyond The Gates Recap: Smitty Comes Dangerously Close to Upsetting The Dupree Apple Cart originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Beyond The Gates recap: Fairmont Country Club: Martin and Vernon are enjoying a meal. They talk a bit about The Articulettes before Vernon brings up that dreadful night. Martin says the past is right in front of them and isn't going anywhere. With that, the duo shoots glances at the nosy waiter. Martin is thrilled his grandfather believes him as he thought he was losing his mind. Vernon says they must do something to calm his nerves. He thinks he should make the suggestion to get the young waiter moved to a different post. They also need to find out what game the young man is playing. Martin tells his grandfather more about what happened with the young waiter the day before. Vernon thinks something more underhanded is happening. Just then, the young waiter approaches and Martin has another flashback. The young waiter says Martin looks like he saw a ghost. Vernon wonders whether they've met before. He says it's hard to tell with so many of their people looking alike – Duprees, he means. Vernon responds knowing EXACTLY what the young waiter meant. With that, Vernon dismisses him and tells Martin he knows the young man is connected to the incident. Martin agrees as he knows he was there that night. Vernon wonders why he would be here and now. With that, Vernon says they need to get to work and make their exit. Unfortunately, Martin leave his keys behind… Martin and Smitty's Place: Smitty and Tyrell are hanging out. Smitty is researching his latest articles and Tyrell compares it to his love of chess. Smitty says he is doing a profile on a police detective. Tyrell calls it a puff piece but knows his dad will turn it into something better. Tyrell asks to hear it and Smitty begins to read. He says he's done some digging and thinks there's more to this guy than meets the eye. Smitty shows his son the information about Marcel taking what appears to be bribes. He is certain something isn't right. How does a cop go from getting by to being a millionaire in such a short amount of time. They do some searching and Smitty wonders who helped Marcel hit the lottery two years prior. Police Station: Jacob is furious when Marcel approaches and asks what's up. He asks if his ire is directed at Leslie's case and Jacob gets all kids of fiery with his elder. Jacob thinks Marcel is nothing but talk. Orphey Gene's: Kat wants to talk about business while Chelsea wants to discuss her relationship with Madison. Kat wonders why she is moving at lightning speed and says she could never. They talk a bit about the meeting with the family before moving on to work issues. Kat tells Chelsea they are being sued for copyright infringement. Chelsea says the idea for the purse was hers alone. Kat believes her and Chelsea thinks someone heard the buzz about their product and is trying to profit. Kat wonders if they will always be plagued with these types of barriers. They both think they need to work together to squash the opposition, so folks know not to mess with them. Jacob arrives and Kat demands an update on THEIR case. He pushes back but Kat demands to be the first person he calls when he gets the results of the DNA test. She grabs her bag and prances towards the door where she runs into Naomi. Naomi wonders if she needs to apologize for her cousin but Jacob says she's lowkey a better partner than the one he's been assigned. Jacob asks Naomi what's up and she tells him about June and the cleanup crew. She's been displaced once again and is without any of her stuff. Jacob says he'll make some calls but thinks June shouldn't get her hopes up. Bill and Hayley's Place: Bill is going on about nonsense when Hayley confronts him about his health. She wants to know the truth so they can fight together. Bill is confused and Hayley says the insurance company called and she wants him to spill. He says he is just making sure she is protected in case anything ever happens. Hayley says she only cares about him, and he promises he's not going anywhere. Just then, Bill gets notice of Chelsea's arrival. Chelsea says she is looking for some free legal advice and shows Bill the copyright suit along with a cease-and-desist order. She promises the purse was her idea and she doesn't even know who these folks are. Chelsea wonders if they are actually capable of shutting their business down. Things get heated with the trio and Chelsea gets snarky with both Bill and Hayley. As Hayley is exiting the room, Chelsea stops her and thanks her for getting her father to the hospital and sticking by his side. She doesn't mean to offend her in her own home. She turns to Bill and says despite his heinous actions, she loves him. Bill knows he hasn't always been a good father but would love to use this opportunity to work together and get closer. Bill and Chelsea sit down, and he says the suit is simply a first effort at intimidation. Chelsea thanks her father. After some pushing, she admits she came to him because he isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Police Station: Marcel asks Elon about Smitty's puff piece. Elon says it's mandatory as the department needs good press. Marcel indicates Smitty is asking all kinds of questions which could cause problems for him and his retirement. Elon wonders if he's been tipped off which leads Marcel to wonder if Martin is responsible. Chelsea and Kat's Digs: Tomas arrives to give Kat legal advice about Leslie's case. She asks if it's possible to hire a private DNA lab to test the sample as the city's folks are backlogged for months. Tomas says it would take the sample out of the chain of custody. Tomas and Kat get all hot and heavy when she shuts down the scene. Kat apologizes but Tomas says she's helping him be a good role model to his little brother, Ramon (when will we meet Ramon and when will he hook up with Samantha?). He says good things are worth waiting for (will he sleep with Eva before Kat?). Tomas asks if there is something she's waiting for to take that next step with him. Kat says she has seen people in her family take chances with love and be devastated. She doesn't want to be anyone's after thought. Tomas assures she won't ever be his afterthought. With that, he says he needs to go back to work. Kat embraces him but Tomas doesn't seem happy. Orphey Gene's: Naomi asks June to please let her secure safter housing. June ignores her words and asks about her things. Naomi says there's no information yet, but Jacob is on the case. June indicates she's not used to folks looking out for her. They talk about the picture and June says there's something about those kids' faces that is special. She thinks if you have a child, it makes the world better. She can imagine anything as she lives her life through that photograph. Naomi promises they will do everything they can to reunite her with her photograph. Jacob arrives with a box of June's things. She looks through everything and thanks Jacob for all his help. She rummages through the box but doesn't see the picture. June freaks out as she throws everything out of the box. At the bottom, she finds the picture and breaks down in tears. She promises her children she will never leave them again. Previous Beyond The Gates Recap: Endings Bill says Chelsea doesn't need to do anything and promises to handle everything. Elon tells Marcel he convinced PR to take the precinct off the publicity tour. There will be no more interviews for the foreseeable future. Marcel says that doesn't solve their problems as Smitty's investigation is going to lead him back to his own house. Marcel tells Elon someone needs to get the message through to him right quick. Elon promises to drive the point home. Smitty calls someone saying he needs to talk to them right now. Vernon speaks to someone (presumably Elon) that the situation needs to be shut down. Martin returns to the table at the country club and finds his keys gone. Keep checking back for the latest Beyond The Gates recaps! Zelina Vega riding high as WWE Women's United States Champion after years of shortcomings
Zelina Vega is a big believer in manifestation. Yet not even she could believe her biggest career achievement thus far. After her in-ring WWE career started in 2018, Vega finally captured a singles title, winning the Women's United States Championship by dethroning the inaugural winner Chelsea Green. It came at a coincidental time. Exactly one week before she won the title, she told USA TODAY Sports at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony red carpet she hoped the championship was in her future. In a way, manifesting it would happen. But when Vega landed the Code Red on Green and got the pin to put the gold in her hands, it was a gratifying moment she didn't expect as she looked at what was finally in her possession. 'It's as much a shock to you guys as it was to me,' Vega told USA TODAY Sports. 'I just realized that as I looked at (the title), I was like, 'Oh (expletive), this is real.' That's when I grabbed my face. That's when I realized it was real.' Long desired by fans, the introduction of the Women's United States and Intercontinental Championship in November 2024 meant more female stars could finally chase and obtain gold. Mid-card runs expand the possibilities available on the roster. That made for the perfect opportunity for Vega, who for so long had fallen short of being a singles champion. She has some notable achievements, like the inaugural Queen of the Ring and a Women's Tag Team Champion in 2021, but like all wrestlers, the goal is to obtain solo gold. Not only had it been years since she grasped a major accolade, Vega came close to finally doing it several times, only to fall short. 'If I'm being honest, it was very deflating each and every single time for me, too,' she said. 'But I think I always got something out of each title opportunity that I got.' She found plenty of silver linings with the championship losses. She lost to Asuka twice in September 2020, but felt like it showed management she's capable of performing in the spotlight. Despite losing to Rhea Ripley at Backlash 2023, she 'won so much more' being able to perform in Puerto Rico as a proud Boricua. In July 2023, Vega felt rejuvenated when she battled Liv Morgan. While there was something positive to take in each loss, Vega knew the clock was ticking on fans sticking with her. With consistent losing, the crowd loses interest and eventually moves on. But after years of just missing out, all the shortcomings, Vega finally did it — and validated herself as someone not to overlook. 'When it happened, the crowd erupted because they're like, 'Oh my god, we weren't expecting this either,'' she said. 'It's nice to prove people wrong.' Silencing the doubters is how Vega plans to carry her title reign. She has a tough act to follow in Green, who turned the inaugural run into comedy gold with the presidential-style reign and the 'Secret Hervice' in Piper Niven and Alba Fyre serving as her security. Vega applauded Green's work because 'she's always able to take something and run with it,' and when it comes to continuing to bring prestige to one of the newer titles on the roster, she wants to showcase that underdog mentality she's always had. Similar to how Rey Mysterio did with his World Heavyweight Championship run in 2006. 'When it comes to what I want to put onto this title, it is it does not matter how big, how small you are. Ultimately, it's what you have in your heart,' Vega said. Zelina Vega honors dad with title Not only did she prove people wrong, but the title victory meant she could have a full circle moment. Less than a week after the win, Vega went to New York City, where she brought the championship to her dad's memorial. Michael Angel Trinidad was one of the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and his name is on the National September 11 Memorial. It was an emotional moment as Vega FaceTimed her mom. Both cried, knowing Vega's father played a major role in her decision to get into wrestling. She noted her father is 'always my why' to push through all obstacles, and when she put the title along her dad's name, she was able to take it all in. 'It felt nice to just finally exhale,' Vega said. 'The only times I've really ever done that was at Backlash (2023), winning (the title) and then at the memorial. 'It was nice to feel like I actually accomplished part of the promise that I made so long ago,' she added. Reuniting with husband Aleister Black in WWE It's a great time in Vega's household; not only is she champion, but her husband, Aleister Black, just made his return to WWE after he left the company in 2021 and went to All Elite Wrestling. Coincidentally, Black's return to WWE came the same night his wife won the title. Vega said the championship match wasn't even the top priority that day, with her focus mostly on making sure her husband was good. It wasn't all worries though. 'I was kind of just wowed by the fact that I was even seeing him at work again. I looked like a little school girl. I was smiling all day long,' Vega said. It made for an even sweeter celebration. When she got backstage from her win, Black was there to greet her and soak it in. Then right afterward, Black was next to get in the ring to have his moment. She said her and Black have been waiting for so long to work together, and now they get to be on the road together and have plenty of nostalgia kicks. She's gone from having this crush on Black when they were both in NXT to now full blown husband and wife. She's a champion, and her husband is back. After years of hoping dedication would eventually pay off, just about everything seems to be going Vega's way. 'You have dreams like that,' Vega said. 'But this time I didn't actually wake up.'
