
Soup kitchen feeds the needy, as access to food is everybody's right

KUALA LUMPUR : It's about 7.30am on a bright and sunny Monday morning, and members of the Brahmarpanam Soup Kitchen are already hard at work, washing and cutting vegetables for the day.
Founded in 2024, this noble initiative located in Jalan Air Panas Baharu here, has been preparing free home-cooked vegetarian meals to be distributed to needy and underprivileged communities across the Klang Valley.
What stands out about this soup kitchen, according to coordinator Arwind Kumar, is its emphasis on healthy and high-quality food.
'Vegetarian meals can also be unhealthy if you add too much salt or preservatives. Here, we don't use onions or garlic, and all our spices are sourced from suppliers who we know are ethical,' Arwind told FMT Lifestyle.
'Our vegetables here are all from an organic farm. And everything is fresh, nothing is pre-kept here. We don't believe in that. Everything is cut and cooked on the day itself.'
The Brahmarpanam Soup Kitchen is an initiative by the Kriyalakshmi Mandir Shree Sai Gurukul Charitable Society founded by GuruMaa Annai Shree Kriyalakshmi Deviyar.
'All this is because of a single person's vision and endless determination. You just cannot put out her fire,' Arwind commented.

A typical day at the kitchen starts around 7.00am, when members of the soup kitchen start work on the 600 to 1,000 meals they usually cook just in time for the lunch hour.
The meals usually consist of rice and curry, with vegetables such as spinach, cauliflower, pumpkin, long beans, carrots and capsicum.
Hygiene in the kitchen is maintained at high standards, Arwind added.
Many who work here are family members of students from a nearby school, also run by the Kriyalakshmi Mandir Shree Sai Gurukul Charitable Society.
Arwind said this was a good way to help underserved members of the community, while equipping volunteers with useful kitchen skills that could help them with employment later.
'Besides, who knows better about home cooking than mothers themselves?' Arwind quipped.
He added that members were encouraged to mix things up and add variety in what they cooked: their mission is to make vegetarian meals fun and interesting.

Once cooked, the food is packed, and transported by van to various locations all over the region.
The kitchen has a list of about 40-50 locations they often visit, including homes and houses of worship. They also serve the marginalised, including migrant workers and members of the transgender community.
Arwind commented that there were many other organisations in the Klang Valley who wished to carry out similar acts of charity. However, they were bound or restricted by bureaucracy.
'By the time you complete background checks, people are already starving to death. Our idea is not to judge or decide who deserves to eat. GuruMaa's idea is if you need food, come and take it,' Arwind stressed.
'It shocks us in this day and age, there are still school students who don't have enough money to get something to eat. And we hope we can contribute towards ending this problem. Food is a right, not a privilege.'
Currently, the soup kitchen only serves meals during the lunch hour, but they hope to expand the scope of their operations in the future.

For Arwind and staff members of the soup kitchen, knowing they have helped to feed someone and make their community a little bit better is the most rewarding part of their efforts.
He emphasised that you don't need to operate on a big scale to create positive change: just start small, and the ripple effect will take care of the rest.
'We did not start this kitchen off this big. We started feeding 10, 20, about 30 people. You don't need to assume that to do things like this, you have to immediately jump the gun and feed 500 people,' Arwind said.
'If you can just cook for your neighbour who's in need, you're on the right path, you're doing the work already!'

Sacking of teacher for refusing Covid-19 vaccine upheld

( Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The Industrial Court has ruled that a private school in Shah Alam was entitled to sack a teacher who refused to take the Covid-19 vaccine as ordered by her employer in 2021. Kuala Lumpur Industrial Court chairman S Vanithamany said the claimant's job required interaction with parents, school staff and children, which was why the school ordered all its employees to take the jab. While the teacher has a legitimate right to be concerned about the side effects of any medication or vaccines prescribed, she said, it must be reasonable and supported by sound medical justification. 'She is not a medical expert. Her refusal to take the vaccine without any medical justification is unreasonable and unfounded,' Vanithamany said in the award handed down two weeks ago. The teacher, a foreign national identified as Tifu, was employed by Peninsula Education (Setia Alam) Sdn Bhd from Jan 18, 2021, with a monthly salary of RM15,500. She said she had performed her duties diligently until she was dismissed from the job in December that year. Tifu said she was given an exceptional performance appraisal from the school's principal in June 2021, and was also awarded the prestigious 'Malaysia Outstanding Teacher Award 2021' by the Malaysian and Asia Pacific Arts Festival. In several emails and Zoom meetings with school authorities, she had maintained that there was no law stating that she must be vaccinated. She also said the mandatory vaccine policy was not in her employment contract although Covid-19 was already an issue and the Movement Control Order (MCO) was in place when she was offered the job. The claimant claimed she had allergies that made it impossible for her to take any Covid-19 vaccine, and also argued there was no law that made the vaccination mandatory for her to continue working at the school. Despite the six months' notice required or salary in lieu as stated in her contract, she said, the company only gave her nine days and cancelled her visa, forcing her to leave the country. In its reply, Peninsula Education said it had adhered strictly to the MCO and lockdown restrictions in Malaysia and bore the cost of vaccination for the staff, which was RM190 a person at the time. The company said the claimant gave numerous 'flimsy, unreasonable and unsubstantiated' excuses for her refusal to get vaccinated. 'The claimant's refusal to get the vaccination was in breach of Clause 6.4 of the employment contract, where she explicitly agreed to all lawful and reasonable directions of the company and not to act in any way contrary to its policies and any laws of Malaysia,' it said. Peninsula Education said it had urged the claimant to reconsider her decision, repeatedly reminding her that it owed its employees and customers a high duty of care. In her award, Vanithamany said the company had a statutory duty under Section 15 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 to ensure the safety, health and welfare of all its employees. 'It is apparent to this court that the company had taken all reasonable steps, including having several virtual meetings to explain the vaccination policy to the claimant. 'These steps were taken as part of the company's broader responsibility to ensure the welfare and safety of all its employees, as required by law and also its corporate duty,' she said. She added that the claimant was working in an environment that required her to have contact and dealings with other employees. Vanithamany said the claimant could not perform her duties remotely, as it was impractical for the employer to create special arrangements, especially given that she was the only employee refusing to be vaccinated. 'It is this court's view that the claimant's conduct in refusing to be vaccinated for Covid-19 was totally unreasonable. Based on all the evidence, this court is convinced that the claimant was in breach of her employment contract,' she said.

Heart attacks claim lives of three Malaysian pilgrims in Mecca, Haj death toll rises to 19
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — Three more Malaysian pilgrims have died in the Holy City of Mecca, bringing the total number of deaths to date to 19. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the latest fatalities involved pilgrims from Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor; Tanah Rata, Pahang; and Butterworth, Penang. He said Abd Wahab Yahaya, 63, from Selangor, passed away at 4.50 pm yesterday (June 19) at Hotel Al-Mubarak in Shisha due to a heart attack. The second and third pilgrims, who also succumbed to heart attacks, were Mohamed Jafri Yahya, 60, from Tanah Rata, who died at 7.39 pm yesterday at Jiwar Hospital in Mecca, and Norizan Tarsi, 59, from Butterworth, who passed away at 6.45 am today (June 20) at Abraj Al-Tayseer. 'Tabung Haji has ensured that all burial arrangements were carried out in accordance with syariah law, including burial management in the Holy Land. The next of kin have been informed and guided with compassion and care. 'On behalf of the Government of Malaysia and all haj agency staff, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. Hannah Yeoh pushes for online therapy as youth addiction soars, says ‘stay away' message no longer works
PETALING JAYA, June 21 – Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has reportedly called for the adoption of online therapy and support services to address addiction among young Malaysians, saying conventional face-to-face counselling is no longer effective. She said traditional awareness campaigns urging youth to avoid drugs and other vices have failed to stem addiction, pointing to the persistent rise in such cases. 'For many years, the government has been doing the same thing, telling youths 'let's avoid doing this' or 'stay away from that', but it has not been effective,' she was quoted saying by Free Malaysia Today. 'We need a new approach, which is why I have told my ministry to start providing online support or online assistance.' Yeoh added that online therapy offers the anonymity and discretion many young people need to seek help, especially for sensitive issues such as pornography addiction. This comes as she said research by the Institute for Youth Research Malaysia revealed that addiction – from substance abuse to sex and pornography – remains a major issue among youths. Yeoh also urged for a 'second chance policy' for youth caught in addiction cycles, warning that a single drug record could derail their future and trap them in the welfare system. 'If we say the youth are the nation's assets and future workforce, how do we expect them to contribute if one mistake writes off their whole future?' she asked. She said her interactions with clients of the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) revealed their desire to recover and lead normal lives without judgment. AADK deputy director-general (operations) Khairul Anwar Bachok had previously flagged rising addiction rates among students, citing a spike in cases between 2022 and 2023. Cases among primary school students increased from 11,611 to 12,755, while lower secondary school figures rose from 36,236 to 37,321. The sharpest increase was seen among upper secondary students, with cases jumping from 47,951 to 55,855.
