4 former Steelers poised for huge 2025 seasons including Justin Fields
The Pittsburgh Steelers took a huge risk this offseason by completely gutting out their skill-position players from top to bottom. Quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson are both set to start for other teams, running back Najee Harris as well and wide receiver George Pickens now gets to line up with an elite running mate at receiver.
Ultimately, how these four players perform in relation to their replacements will go a long way in terms of public perception of the job head coach Mike Tomlin has done. Let's break out the positions these four find themselves in.
Quarterback Justin Fields
Fields got a raw deal in Pittsburgh. After going 4-2 as a starter in 2024, Tomlin chose to bench Fields in favor of Wilson, which ended any opportunity to re-sign Fields. Now Fields is the new starting quarterback of the New York Jets and has some excellent weapons around him and a coaching staff willing to tailor things around his skills.
Quarterback Russell Wilson
No one expected Wilson to come in and win a Super Bowl. But after missing the first six games with a calf injury, Wilson returned last season and started off hot. But after going 6-1 in his first seven starts, the wheels fell off and the team crumbled down the stretch. Now, Wilson is set to start but compete with rookie Jaxson Dart to run what is set up to be an explosive Giants passing game.
Running back Najee Harris
When Harris signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, we immediately felt like this was the best thing that could happen to him. We love Harris as a player and never felt like he was the best fit in Pittsburgh and didn't have the offensive line to help him be successful. Now, even with rookie Omarion Hampton with the Chargers, Harris is in a great spot to be a much more effecient runner, even if he isn't the full-time starter.
Wide receiver George Pickens
We hated to see the Steelers trade Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. Even with all his issues, we felt like having DK Metcalf on the team as well as Aaron Rodgers to be the offensive leader would have been great for him. Now, he goes to a near-identical situation with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to push his game to the next level.

Notre Dame alum Ian Book awaits next chance at the NFL

The former Fighting Irish QB was last with the Philadelphia Eagles. Former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book remains unsigned for 2025 -- and he's still looking for work. Book was a backup on last year's Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles squad. Book is back in South Bend and he's been training every day on the Notre Dame campus, keeping himself in shape for any prospective NFL team. He's the winningest quarterback in Fighting Irish history, going 30-5 as a starter. 'I'm a free agent right now,' Book told the South Bend Tribune on Sunday while attending the Golic SubPar Golf Classic fundraiser at Warren Golf Course. 'I'm just waiting for a call. I'm training here at Notre Dame, using the facilities, throwing with the guys.' The 27-year-old has played in just one NFL game. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round in 2021, and he completed 12-of-20 passes for 135 and two interceptions in a game against the Miami Dolphins during his rookie season. Book started in an emergency on Dec. 27. He was sacked eight times in that game. Book has also been with the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots, in addition to two stints with the Eagles. In addition to attempting to return to football, Book is in involved in a business venture with former Notre Dame offensive linemen Josh Lugg, Tommy Kraemer, Cole Mabry, and Luke Eichenberg. Former Notre Dame lacrosse player Jake Taylor is also involved. Still, Book has a desire to get back to the NFL. 'Hell, yeah,' he said. 'Oh, it's there. I'll give it everything I got this year. No question.' Contact/Follow us @IrishWireND on X (Formerly Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Notre Dame news, notes, and opinions. Follow Tim on X: @tehealey

Falcons miss out on Pro Bowl cornerback in PFF's 2013 NFL redraft

Pro Football Focus' 2013 NFL redraft has Falcons take different path in Round 1 Back in 2013, the Atlanta Falcons used their first- and second-round picks to add two key members to the secondary. The team drafted cornerback Desmond Trufant in the first round, then landed defensive back Robert Alford in Round 2. While neither player is headed for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, both played key roles during the team's run to the Super Bowl. Trufant made his only Pro Bowl appearance with the Falcons in 2015, while Alford started 76 games during his six seasons in Atlanta. What would have happened if the Falcons went in a different direction during the 2013 NFL draft? Pro Football Focus released a 2013 redraft that has Atlanta missing out on Trufant and taking offensive lineman Justin Pugh. Pugh notched 70.0-plus PFF overall grades in each of his first four NFL seasons, all with the Giants. His career also included a three-year stretch in Arizona (2019 to 2021) during which he earned strong 70.0-plus PFF pass-blocking grades. -- PFF's Max Chadwick, Dalton Wasserman and Trevor Sikkema The Falcons would likely have been okay with landing Pugh, even if the 11-year NFL veteran never made a Pro Bowl during his playing career. However, you could argue the team needed defensive help more than an offensive lineman at that time, and it's impossible to know whether or not the Falcons would have still made the Super Bowl with Pugh. Trufant, who spent his first seven seasons in Atlanta, finished his career with 14 interceptions, 89 passes defended, seven fumbles recovered and six sacks. The Falcons did not bring back Trufant following the 2019 season. He went on to sign with the Detroit Lions in 2020. After his lone season in Detroit, Trufant spent his final year in the NFL playing for the New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders.

Respect finally finds Nick Sirianni in a recent NFL coaches ranking

Sometimes, it's good to be wrong. There's no point in lying to anyone. Once upon a time, the Philadelphia Eagles' hire of Nick Sirianni seemed terrifying. We have certainly come a long way, haven't we? The start of his era has been white hot. The Eagles have qualified for the playoffs in each of their first four seasons at the helm. He has led his team to two Super Bowl appearances. Advertisement The most recent ended with Philadelphia's second Vince Lombardi Trophy, and had it not been for a greased field two years earlier, one constructed by the opposing team's groundsman, we're probably talking about him being 2-0 on the big stage. So, here we sit. It's been more than four years since seven new NFL head-coaching hires were announced. Nick and Dan Campbell are the only two who are still employed by the teams that gave them that opportunity. Nick Sirianni lands a top-four mention in a ranking of NFL head coaches It's one of the more baffling discussions when mentioning the NFL's head coaches. Sirianni never seems to get the proper respect that he deserves. At this point, it seems disrespectful, but thank Heaven for Pro Football Network. Finally! Someone seems to get it! Advertisement Brandon Austin is the writer of PFN's latest NFL head coaches ranking. Coach Sirianni lands fourth on the list. Here's some of Austin's explanation: "Sirianni's career postseason record stands at 6-3, and his 70.6% regular-season winning percentage puts him among the best in the game. While general manager Howie Roseman gets much of the credit (and rightfully so), Sirianni has maximized the talent he's been given." No lies were told there. In addition to Austin's point, we'd add the following: He has survived public battering and a plummeting approval rating. He has proven to be up to the task of handling adversity. Sure, the first press conference scared us. We have, however, long retired the complaints about him sometimes being socially awkward, or at least we should have. Nick Sirianni has been labeled a CEO head coach, benefiting from having an incredible roster, but has anyone ever won without talent? Think about that for a second. Perhaps Austin puts it best: "Roseman has done a phenomenal job of assembling rosters and putting Sirianni in a great position to succeed at his job, but he can't execute for him. Love him or hate him, Sirianni is a fiery guy, and the players seem to have a great deal of respect for him. Not to mention, the results on the field back him up." Advertisement Year five is loading. The NFL is a 'what have you done for me lately' league, so Nick will have to prove that he can do it again. Criticism will come. So will doubt. That's to be expected, but Nick Sirianni is an elite head coach. No one can fake anything for as long as he's delivered the results. It's nice to see someone give him the proper respect.
