Clancy Brown, Joel McHale, and more actors who self-submitted at this year's Emmys
Networks and studios submit hundreds of actors for Emmy consideration each year, but those not officially entered can still self-submit for a chance at receiving a nomination. This year, that happened in droves.
Recognizable names like Clancy Brown (supporting actor for The Penguin) and Joel McHale (guest star on The Bear) were not on the studios' lists that were made public prior to the ballots being released on June 12. It's possible they were added later by the networks, or that the performers self-submitted. Note that Television Academy members get one free submission each year; otherwise, entry fees are based on several factors. Here is the fine print from the Emmys rulebook:

Individual achievement entries have a processing charge of $125 per submission. In addition to the $125 processing charge, each entrant is charged a $100 entry fee per individual listed on the entry, e.g., for an individual achievement entry (commercials, costume design, editing, sound editing, etc.) with two entrants, the processing fee is $125 + $200 entry fee (for a total of $325 for the entry). Program entries have a processing charge of $225 per submission. In addition to the $225 processing charge, each entrant included with the submission is charged a $100 entry fee, e.g., the entry fee for a program entry (comedy series, limited or anthology series, documentary, etc.) that has four producers, the processing fee is $225 + $400 entry fee (for a total of $625 for the entry).
Brown plays mob boss Salvatore "Sal" Maroni on The Penguin, who enjoys a longstanding rivalry with Colin Farrell's titular Oswald "Oz" Cobb. HBO only submitted four actors from the limited series on the Emmy ballot: Farrell, Cristin Milioti (as Sofia Gigante), Rhenzy Feliz (as Victor "Vic" Aguilar), and Deirdre O'Connell (as Francis Cobb).
McHale returned to The Bear in the third season as guest star David Field, but he was not one of the 19 performers submitted by FX. The villainous chef appeared in the Season 3 finale for a crucial scene opposite Jeremy Allen White's embattled Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto. McHale is a prior Emmy nominee for The Soup in Best Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program (2014).
Max officially campaigned 11 actors for Hacks, its reigning comedy series champion. But there are actually 13 performers on the Emmy ballot, with both supporting actor Dan Bucatinsky (as Rob, the executive producer of Late Night) and guest actress Lauren Weedman (as Jo Pezzimenti, the mayor of Las Vegas) appearing to be self-submitters.
Hot new contender The Pitt announced it was campaigning 13 actors for its breakout first season, including series lead Noah Wyle. Four of the show's guest stars have likely put themselves up for bids: Brandon Keener (as John Bradley, the father of a braindead teenager), Drew Powell (as Doug Driscoll, a disgruntled patient who punches Katherine LaNasa's nurse Dana), Stacie Greenwell (as Tina Chambers, the mother of a young patient), and Arun Storrs (as Minu, a woman who was pushed onto train tracks).
A pair of Shrinking's recurring cast members — Devin Kawaoka (as Charlie, the fiancé of Brian) and Wendie Malick (as Julie Baram, the girlfriend of Paul) — were not among the 13 stars that Apple TV+ was initially campaigning. They possibly entered their own names, as they both now appear on the supporting ballots.
HBO's zombie apocalypse drama The Last of Us put forward 10 actors for contention, including Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in lead actor and lead actress. However, even though Danny Ramirez (as Manny Alvarez) was not a part of the initial campaign, he is now eligible to be voted for as a supporting actor.
Other actors who apparently self-submitted for the 2025 Emmys include Luke Brandon Field (Interview With The Vampire), Ron Rogge (Matlock), Ramy Youssef (The Studio), and Kitty Hawthorne (Your Friends & Neighbors). Join the Emmy discussion in our TV forums.
Historically speaking, self-submissions sometimes do lead to Emmy nominations. In 2019, Gwendoline Christie entered her own name for the final season of Game of Thrones, and she wound up receiving a bid for Best Drama Supporting Actress. The year prior, The Handmaid's Tale guest actress Kelly Jenrette, who played Annie, self-submitted and earned a 2018 nom for Best Drama Guest Actress.

Vampire Thriller ‘Sinners' Gets HBO Max Streaming Premiere Date

Rated R, Sinners opens in theaters on April 18 and debuted on digital streaming via premium video on demand on June 3. The official logline for Sinners reads, 'Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.' Jordan stars as the twin brothers, Smoke and Stack. Now,just over a month after the film made its PVOD debut, Sinners will be coming to streaming on HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced Friday that Sinners would arrive on HBO Max on Friday, July 4. The film will then debut on HBO linear on Saturday, July 5, at 8 p.m. ET. For viewers who don't subscribe to Max, the streaming service offers an ad-based package for $9.99 per month, an ad-free package for $16.99 per month and an ad-free package with 4K Ultra HD Programming for $20.99 per month. Sinners' quick arrival on the streaming service isn't a complete surprise. The Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform fast-tracked the release of A Minecraft Movie to the HBO Max five weeks after its debut on May 13. A Minecraft Movie is new on the streaming service Friday. 'Sinners' Was A Major Hit At The Box Office Sinners is still playing in theaters and will remain in 536 venues this weekend. To date, the film has earned $276.4 million domestically and $85.4 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $361.9 million against a $90 production budget before prints and advertising costs, according to The Numbers. Sinners also quickly became a big hit on PVOD, as it quickly staked out the No. 1 spot on many digital purchase charts in its first week of release. The film will also be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, July 8. Like those who purchased a digital copy of the film, the 4K and Blu-ray versions of Sinners will also contain bonus material including four production featurettes. Sinners was also a big hit with Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the film a 97% 'fresh' rating based on 375 reviews. The film also received a 96% 'fresh' Popcornmeter score on RT, based on 25,000-plus verified user ratings. Also starring Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wumni Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller and Delroy Lindo, Sinners will arrive on HBO Max on July 4 and HBO linear on July 5 at 8 p.m. ET.

‘SNL's' 50th season takes on 9-time-champ ‘Last Week Tonight' for the Best Scripted Variety Series Emmy
When Last Week Tonight With John Oliver switched Emmy categories from Variety Talk Series to Scripted Variety Series, it put an end to Saturday Night Live's six-year winning streak. Last Week Tonight, which has claimed nine consecutive program trophies, is now hoping to take home No. 10 this year. But SNL's milestone 50th season should prove to be a worthy competitor. First things first: there are six submissions this year for Best Scripted Variety Series, which means there will only be two nominees. Television Academy members who vote on this category are instructed to watch an episode of each contender (a requirement that is not present in the other program races), and then vote "yes" or "no" for whether they think each one is worthy of a nomination. The two entries that receive the highest amount of support will receive bids, as long as they are both over 70 percent approval, according to the Emmys rulebook. Best Drama Writing Emmy predictions: ‘The Pitt' takes a risk by submitting 3 episodes
Ballots for the 2025 Emmys have officially been released and voting is currently underway in all categories. For Best Drama Series Writing, there are 132 submissions, which means there will be six finalists for the category when nominations are announced July 15. When it comes to writing, there are two strategic approaches when it comes to seeking a slot: submit one showcase episode or flood the zone. This year, as is often the case, practically all of the frontrunners are opting for the former tactic. This includes the incumbent winner Will Smith for Slow Horses, who is the only nominee from last year eligible again. He could win his second consecutive Emmy for the Season 4 finale, a shattering, suspenseful episode surrounding River Cartwright (Jack Lowden). It's just as devastating, with a race against time and multiple story turns, capped by a final twist that has left fans wanting more. READ: The second episode of The Last of Us, written by showrunner Craig Mazin, features a brutal battle that ends in a tragic, heartbreaking death and changes the trajectory of the entire series. And there are standout, lengthy monologues in submissions from both The White Lotus — Sam Rockwell's 10-minute treatise on sex, incest, and suicidal attempts — and Andor, which features Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma delivering an all-too-relevant speech on the manipulation of power and truth -- a theme similar to teleplay that earned the Star Wars series a writing nomination in its first season. HBO READ: The Pitt, however, zagged while the competition zigged, presenting three choices on the ballot. There's first hour by creator R. Scott Gemmill (pilots historically do well in the writing category), the fourth episode penned by star Noah Wyle, and the eighth episode by medical consultant Joe Sachs, featuring a drowning child patient and an honor walk. The reason most shows shy away from multiple submissions is the threat of vote-splitting, especially when it comes to a debut show that hasn't yet established itself at the Emmys. Nontheless, we expect The Pitt pilot to make the cut. The other notable series to push multiple scripts was The Handmaid's Tale. For its final season, the Emmy-winning series submitted the last three episodes for consideration. Most of the rest of the top contenders put forward either their pilots/premieres or their finales. This include The Day of the Jackal, Black Doves, Paradise, and Squid Game for the former, and The Diplomat for the latter. Two other possibilities for those six slots are Bad Sisters, a previous nominee for last season, for its penultimate episode, and Industry, for its fourth installment, featuring some of the most intense dialogue and high stakes.
