St. James Parish deputies in search of Mississippi man missing for five years
ST. JAMES PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The St. James Parish Sheriff's Office has asked for the public's help in searching for a man who has reportedly been missing since 2020.
SJSO detectives are searching for David Shawn Gibson Jr., who is originally from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and was reported missing by his girlfriend on June 18, 2020.
Detectives said Gibson, who was 30 years old at the time of his disappearance, was last seen in the backyard of a home on Admiral's Landing Street in Paulina, around 3 p.m. on June 15.

At that time, detectives say he weighed about 155 pounds and was 5'5″ with blue eyes and balding blond hair.

Small gathering lays ashes of wrongfully convicted man to rest, as family seeks probe
HALIFAX - In a quiet grove at the edge of a Halifax cemetery, the family of a wrongfully convicted man laid his remains to rest, and said his fight for justice lives on. Glen Assoun died June 14, 2023, but the family postponed interring his ashes until a gathering Monday, presided over by Rev. David Watt, a Baptist minister who stood by his friend over the years. 'We laid him here to rest .... But I feel like the real rest will happen when we have a resolution and some people are held accountable,' said his daughter Amanda Huckle, following the small gathering. In March 2019, a Nova Scotia court acquitted Assoun in the 1995 killing of his ex-girlfriend, Brenda Lee Way. During 17 years in prison and five years under strict bail conditions, Assoun developed heart illnesses and suffered from mental illnesses. He only received a compensation settlement from the federal and provincial governments about two years before he died at the age of 67. Almost five years ago, the province requested the police oversight body begin a formal probe into whether officers broke the law when they destroyed evidence relevant to Assoun's case. In March 2021, the Nova Scotia police watchdog announced that to ensure transparency, its counterpart in British Columbia had agreed to be on the investigation. But on Nov. 30, 2023, Nova Scotia's agency announced the B.C. watchdog had dropped the case due to a heavy workload. Since then, the agency has reached out to multiple police oversight bodies and has struggled to find one that will take the case. Erin Nauss, the director of the Serious Incident Response Team, said in an email Monday that she had 'hoped to have an update,' but isn't yet in a position to share information about the next steps. 'I want to assure you that my focus and our work on moving this investigation forward has not wavered. I will provide an update when there is more to say,' she wrote. Huckle said the family's expectations aren't wavering, as this is an important part of how they can move forward. 'This (interment) is closure for us in some aspects but there's still that lingering door that is still open,' she said. During the ceremony, Assoun's ashes were placed in a marble bench inscribed with the Gibson guitars he loved to play. Family members each touched the sides of the enclosure. Tanya Assoun, his eldest daughter, read an April 19, 2009, letter he'd written to her from prison, telling her he missed her and advising, 'Be strong and think positive ... set your bar high. Through the grace of God justice will prevail.' 'He always wanted the best for me,' she said after the service. 'Even though he was in prison, he would always say those things to me.' During the gathering, Watt read Bible verses and recalled 'the blessing of memories,' including sitting and eating meals with Assoun, who was his roommate for two years after his release. As the group walked away from the secluded spot, Watt said his friend would have liked the nature path and the tranquil spot where his bench is set. The only sound through the day was of a slight June breeze. Amanda Huckle agreed. 'My Dad deserved peace. He deserves this peace,' she said. Metairie man to serve 30 years for 2019, 2021 sex abuse crimes
JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The Metairie man found guilty in May of drugging and sexually abusing teenagers, has been sentenced. On Thursday, June 12, the Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office announced 46-year-old Thomas Welty will serve 30 years in prison convicted of: Second-degree rape and trafficking children for sexual purposes involving one victim Indecent behavior with a juvenile Contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile Sexual battery of the other victim On May 20, Welty was found guilty of the crimes that happened between 2019 and 2021 with 15-year-old victims. Former OPSO employee arrested, accused of conspiring to bring drugs into Orleans Parish jail Court documents noted the abuse began during the 2019 Carnival season when Welty provided one victim with alcohol until she ultimately passed out. That's when he took her to his home and injected her with a 'highly addictive methamphetamine.' The encounter caused the victim to develop an addiction to the drug, documents noted. After raping her, Welty allowed two drug-dealing associates to do the same in exchange for narcotics (they have never been identified). During that same month, Welty had given a 'date rape' drug, GHB, to a second victim. She also passed out but woke up in the shower with Welty, according to court documents. It was also noted that the second victim rejected his sexual advances and left his house. During the trial, one victim's impact statement read: 17-year-old shot, killed in St. John the Baptist Parish 'I choose to forgive what you've done, but not for you,' the victim wrote. 'I'm forgiving you for myself, because at the end of the day I need to heal – not you. 'I was so grateful to learn that every seven years, every cell in your entire body is being replaced. And with that being said, how great is it to know that I will finally have a body you will have never touched.' New Orleans police celebrate new K-9 unit facility
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with the New Orleans Police Department and city leaders cut the ribbon on a new, state-of-the-art kennel facility for the department's K-9 unit. Pikachu, 10,000 fans land in New Orleans According to the NOPD, the new facility features 10 climate-controlled spaces, as well as indoor and outdoor access for kennels, new training equipment, improved lighting and improved water access. The $316,000 project also includes upgrades to fencing and elevation for flood protection. NOPD Lt.
