Minister to be referred to standards commissioner following Larne fire

Prior to the fire, Gordon Lyons posted on social media that the leisure centre had been used to accommodate several people following riotous behaviour in the town of Ballymena, which is 30 minutes away.
Matthew O'Toole, the leader of the opposition in the Northern Ireland Assembly, said he would refer the minister to the commissioner.
Mr Lyons said on Wednesday: 'As a local MLA for the area, neither I nor my DUP Council colleagues were made aware or consulted on this decision until late this afternoon.'
He added: 'It has now been confirmed to us by the PSNI and Council that all these individuals are in the care of the Housing Executive and have been moved out of Larne.
'Protesting is of course a legitimate right but violence is not and I would encourage everyone to remain peaceful.'
A fire later broke out at the centre following vandalism at the facility on the third night of disorder in Northern Ireland.
Masked individuals smashed windows at the leisure centre in Co Antrim on Wednesday and set fires outside which spread inside.
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council said the facility had been designated as an emergency rest centre for those in urgent need following disturbances in nearby Ballymena but the families had been safely relocated elsewhere.
Police and firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control on Wednesday night.
Mr Lyons condemned the damage inflicted on Larne Leisure Centre and said it only serves to hurt residents of the town.
He said: 'The violence and disorder witnessed on our streets over recent nights serves no purpose. Wanton destruction such as the attack on Larne Leisure Centre is an attack on all residents who use the facility.
'There is absolutely no excuse for what has taken place in Larne, and it must be condemned.'
Mr O'Toole, an SDLP MLA, said: 'The actions of the Communities Minister cannot be ignored.
'He is the minister response for the Housing Executive and lives are at stake.'
He said the opposition will refer Mr Lyons to the standards commissioner on Thursday and 'explore all other options for accountability'.
The fire coincided with a third night of public disorder in Ballymena.
The violence began around Clonavon Terrace on Monday night following an earlier peaceful protest which was organised in support of the family of a girl who was the victim of an alleged sexual assault in the area.
Two teenage boys, who spoke to a court through a Romanian interpreter, have been charged.
The DUP has been contacted for comment.

Man accused of murdering Scottish gangsters in Spain appears in court

More info The man accused of murdering Eddie Lyons and Ross Monaghan in Spain appeared in court on Friday. Michael Terrence Riley from the Merseyside area, was arrested by local officers last week in connection with the deaths of Eddie Lyons and Ross Monaghan after an international arrest warrant was issued by Spanish cops, the Daily Record. He is charged with two counts of murder and one of possession of a firearm over the incident which saw Monaghan, 43, and Lyons, 46, killed at Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola. Riley first appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday, June 19, but the hearing was delayed due to technical issues. During a brief hearing today, a court date for his next appearance was set. Riley, who is represented in court by specialist extradition lawyer Renata Pinter, will appear again before the same court next month, on July 18. He was remanded in custody until then. The full hearing, where Riley will challenge extradition, is scheduled for October 9 this year. The Lyons crime clan has been locked in a deadly feud with the rival Daniel mob for a quarter of a century, following the theft of drugs from a Glasgow safe house in 2001. A top Spanish cop told reporters the assassinations of Monaghan and Lyons are part of the feud, claiming that Riley is a member of the Daniel gang. Speaking at a press conference in Spain, Pedro Agudo Novo said: "The double murder was carried out by a professional killer and member of one of the victims' rival gangs. "In this case we are not talking about an independent hired killer but an internal member of the rival Daniels gang who ends up assassinating two members of an enemy gang." Scottish police, who have been investigating the war between the rival crime syndicates for decades, seemed to suggest the killing had nothing to do with their rivalry - or the war on the Daniel mob being waged by Lyons associate Ross McGill. Henchmen of the Dubai-based former Rangers ultra - who headed the Union Bears fan group and is nicknamed 'Miami' - have waged war on the Daniel mob and associates for the last few months. The feud has seen a number of homes, people and businesses targeted in firebombings, knife attacks and shootings, in Glasgow, Edinburgh and surrounding areas, and is being investigated by Police Scotland as part of Operation Portaledge.

Brit knocked unconscious by single punch during row with Benidorm bouncers

The unidentified British tourist and his pals were getting rowdy with bouncers in a Benidorm bar when a local intervened and knocked him unconscious A British tourist was knocked out cold when a Spanish local sucker-punched him during a row with bouncers in Benidorm. A fellow reveller captured the moment the unidentified Brit fell to the floor after the vicious sucker punch at a bar in the Spanish resort town on Sunday night. ‌ Eyewitnesses recalled how another pubgoer had asked him and his pals to leave when a bouncer decided to intervene. The tension racheted up and things became "heated", one person said. ‌ In the footage, the Brit dressed in a white outfit is pushed by a group of men. His friend then steps in before the man is brutally punched in the face and falls to the floor. Shockingly, his leg can also be seen bending unnaturally back towards his hip. A woman with a pink cowboy hat on her head rushes over and crouches over him while the man's friends carry on with their brawl. Another reveller said: "It's always the d***head Brits - it makes you ashamed to be a Brit sometimes. We'd been in there for two hours or so - it seemed a nice bar and all of a sudden we heard a bit of a commotion. "There was a smaller guy who we think was a local and he looked like a bouncer but looked a bit too small to be one. He was asking them to leave, and then the larger bouncer came over and things got a bit heated. It looks like the smaller guy then knocks him out. He was out cold, and his leg looked dislocated." ‌ The man's condition is currently unknown. It comes months after a Brit was left fighting for his life after being punched by a bouncer outside a Benidorm nightclub. Andrew Frazer, 43, was allegedly floored by a doorman in an 'unprovoked' attack during a lads' break to the famous Costa Blanca resort just over a week after proposing to long-term partner Carrie Howard. The father-of-two, from St Helens, Merseyside, had to have part of his skull cut away to relieve swelling on the brain. He was taken back to the UK with a gruelling 27-hour journey in the back of a private ambulance because his injuries were too severe for a medical flight. Overnight it emerged a 42-year-old Romanian man had been arrested over the early-hours incident on November 14 outside a pub in Benidorm's famous Little England area. The unnamed suspect was held last week on suspicion of a crime of wounding.
