Sean McVay: Rams' minicamp in Hawaii is about quality time together
The Rams made the unusual decision to have this week's mandatory minicamp in Maui, and coach Sean McVay said the trip was as much about togetherness as it was about football. Players were encouraged to bring their families with them for a Hawaiian vacation, and McVay said that meant a lot for the team's bonding. McVay also said that Los Angeles and Maui have in common that they're rebuilding from wildfires, and that the Rams wanted to bring some goodwill to the area. 'It's about connection and being able to get some time,' McVay said, via Sarah Barshop of ESPN. 'It's cool to be able to really, for me, meet a lot of these guys' families that maybe I haven't met quite yet or see their wives or girlfriends or their kids, and so that's been a really cool thing so far. This is about being able to get some good quality time with each other and then being able to use the platform that we're blessed with to be able to get back to a community that went through some similar things that we can all understand and kind of empathize with, and you see how excited they are to see our players and that's fun.' There was a time when summer practices in the NFL were brutal, and coaches were taskmasters. McVay represents a new generation of coaches who see the summer as a time to build camaraderie and make sure players are taking care of their bodies so they're healthy when the season starts. That buys him plenty of goodwill with his players.

June 21 1916 — Rube Foster of the Red Sox pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the New York Yankees. Foster struck out three and walked three and pitched the first no-hitter at Fenway Park. 1938 — Pinky Higgins of the Boston Red Sox extended his consecutive hit string to 12, with eight hits in a doubleheader split with the Detroit Tigers. He went 4 for 4 in an 8-3 win in the opener and 4 for 4 in a 5-4 loss in the nightcap. The next day, Higgins struck out against Vern Kennedy in his first at-bat to end the streak. 1939 — The New York Yankees announced Lou Gehrig's retirement, based on the report that he has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The 36-year-old star remained as the team as captain. 1941 — Lefty Grove's 20-game consecutive win streak at Fenway Park ended with a 13-9 loss to the St. Louis Browns. The streak spanned from May 3, 1938, to May 12, 1941. 1950 — Joe DiMaggio gets his 2,000th hit, a 7th-inning single off the Indians'Marino Pieretti, as the Yanks win, 8 - 2. He made it clear first and foremost just how proud he is of the young signal caller. "I'm proud of Arch," Manning said. "He went to Texas because that's where he wanted to go. He wanted to go to school there. That was the reason I went to Tennessee." Manning continued on to talk about what makes the Longhorns such a good football program. "It's more than just the football program," he said. "You like going to school there. You like the head coach who also calls the plays, and that creates great continuity. To me, the Kyle Shanahans, the Sean McVays – when the head coach is calling the plays – the quarterback is going to thrive in the same system every single year." He then transitioned into talking about the younger Manning's upcoming year. "The fact that this will be Arch's third year in that system, he'll have great knowledge of the system – still hasn't had on-the-field game reps as I'm sure he would have liked, but those will come this year," Manning said. "There will be things for him to learn, but I'm proud of him for his commitment and I'm looking forward to watching him play." After waiting behind Ewers for two years, it's Manning's turn. He's ready for the limelight and will be given a chance to prove that the superstar hype he has received as a backup is accurate. His uncle is clearly excited and expecting big things from him. It will be interesting to see if Manning is able to prove everyone right for believing in him.
