Three arrested for illegal firearms and ammunition in Eastern Cape
Three suspects have been arrested for being in possession of illegal firearms, ammunition, and military-grade equipment in Port St. John's, Eastern Cape.
A coordinated intelligence-driven operation by SAPS Tactical Response Teams (TRT) and Combat units executed search warrants at two homesteads in Tombo A/A and Mthumbane.
The illegal firearms are allegedly linked to taxi violence and cash-in-transit robberies.
The team members made their first stop at Tombo A/A, where they found the first suspect, a 46-year-old female who failed to produce valid documentation for ammunition, even though she had a firearm license.
Her counterpart, a 52-year-old male, was found in possession of an unlicensed shotgun.
The third suspect, a 38-year-old female, was found with a wooden case containing multiple rifles in Mthumbane.
Initially, she claimed she had no knowledge of the firearms and pinned them on her husband.
All three suspects are facing charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and Contravention of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000).
They will make their court appearance at the Port St. John's Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 17 June 2025.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, commended the team's work ethic in combating crime.
'This operation underscores SAPS's commitment to dismantling criminal networks that terrorise our communities. The seizure of weapons, especially military-style rifles, disrupts planned violent crimes and enhances public safety. We urge communities to report illegal firearms anonymously via Crime Stop,' said General Kupiso.
A 25-year-old female Mozambican national was arrested for illegal processing of suspected precious minerals on Friday, 13 June 2025.
The Mopani District Illicit Mining Task Team in Limpopo were patrolling along the Nsami River in Mavalani Village when they discovered five individuals processing gold in the river.
Upon approaching the suspects, they all fled in different directions; however, the female suspect was caught and apprehended.

Woman allegedly sexually assaulted during oil massage
A 25-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted while having an oil massage at an undisclosed hotel in Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The woman reported that a female masseuse sexually assaulted her. Explaining to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the woman said that she had booked a massage at the hotel after suffering pain on both her feet while training for an upcoming sporting event. Emotionally distraught, the woman said that within minutes of the massage, the female masseuse rubbed oils onto her private parts and touched her inappropriately. She asked the masseuse to stop what she was doing, which she did. The masseuse then asked the victim to turn over. However, that was not the end of it. When the woman lay on her back, the masseuse moved her underwear aside and began touching her private parts with one hand while fondling her breast at the same time. She recalls that her eyes were immediately filled with tears and she requested that the massage be stopped. While getting dressed, the masseuse also broke down, cried and repeatedly apologised explaining that she was bisexual and had become aroused during the massage session. The woman is currently seeking advice on registering a criminal case. A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment after being convicted for raping a 19-year-old female victim in an incident that occurred in August 2021. According to a police statement, the victim was visiting a friend at their parental home in Drikoppies Trust. While on her way back home, the accused, Calvin Shabangu, violently assaulted the victim, destroyed her mobile phone and forced her into his bedroom where he repeatedly raped her. Following the assault, the victim fled the scene and reached a nearby house for assistance. The following day, she reported the matter to her family and was taken to the Schoemansdal Police Station, where a rape case was officially opened. The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Tonga, with members from Schoemansdal Visible Policing, traced and arrested Shabangu. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed his gratitude displayed by the Investigation team, the Prosecution team, and the Judiciary. 'We commend the victim for her bravery in coming forward and the exceptional efforts demonstrated by our SAPS members in ensuring swift justice. This outcome reinforces our commitment to combating Gender-Based-Violence and ensuring the safety of our communities,' said Mkhwanazi. Man sentenced to life imprisonment for rape
The Springs Magistrate Court has sentenced Thobimvula Ngeyane to life imprisonment over charges of rape. Ngeyane was charged after raping a 44-year-old woman at his home in Kwa-Thema, Gauteng in November 2022. The 40-year-old accused pretended to buy a cold drink at the victim's place and asked her to follow him to his home to collect money for the drink. Upon arrival at his home, Ngeyane raped the victim and stopped when his younger brother walked in on them. A case of rape was opened at SAPS Kwa-Thema and transferred to Springs Family violence, Child Protection Services and Sexual Offenses Unit. After thorough investigations, the accused was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. In other news, the Standerton Regional Court sentenced a serial rapist to 25 years' imprisonment for raping a woman in 2016. According to police, the victim was on her way to a hiking spot along Secunda Road (R546) near Charl Cilliers in May 2016 when she accepted a lift from an unknown man driving a white vehicle of an unidentified make and registration number. Initially, the suspect claimed he was heading in the same direction as the victim but later changed his route and claimed he needed to pick up others from a nearby farm. The suspect then suddenly stopped the vehicle near a dumping site and assaulted the victim. 'It is further alleged that he moved to the passenger seat, used a hat to cover the victim's nose, and physically assaulted her.' 'The suspect then tied her with a seatbelt, forcibly removed her clothing, and raped her multiple times without protection, despite her resistance and cries for help,' the police statement read. After the assault, the suspect wiped himself and the victim, removed the vehicle's registration plate and hid it under the driver's seat. He then threw the victim's belongings out of the vehicle before abandoning her in an isolated area. The victim hitchhiked to Charl Cilliers for help and was transferred to Standerton Police Station for further investigation and a medical examination. In a twist of events, the victim witnessed the suspect being escorted by prison wardens at a hospital and immediately alerted the police. The police identified the suspect and arrested him. He was found guilty of rape and sentenced to 25 years in prison. The sentence will run concurrently with other prison terms he is already serving, including housebreaking, two counts of assault, 10 counts of rape, kidnapping and three counts of theft.
