Former Scottish football starlet blinded in bottle attack lands prestigious car dealer prize

Daily Record25-05-2025

John McTier was the victim of an unprovoked attack in Govan when he was just 16
A talented footballer blinded in a bottle attack has become an award-winning car dealer - and said the traumatic incident drove him to success.
John McTier was just 16 when he was jumped by a gang of six as he walked his girlfriend home in Govan. Now, 21 years on, he is celebrating success.

John had just signed for Ayr United and experts predicted a big future ahead of him when his career was left in ruins by the unprovoked attack in December 2004.

He was jumped by a gang of teen thugs - three boys and three girls - aged 14-17 as he walked near his home in Govan, Glasgow.
As he lay in hospital blinded in one eye and thinking about the wreckage of his life he told his mum Patricia: "I wish they had finished me off. If I can't play football I can't do anything else."
John, a promising left-winger, tried to make a comeback but losing the sight in his left eye proved too much to overcome and he was forced to give up the game.
He was initially offered just £32,000 in compensation for the assault, including just £5,000 for loss of earnings.
But lawyer Liam O'Donnell, ex-Scottish PFA chief Fraser Wishart, then Ayr coach Robert Connor and former Dundee United winger and team-mate Craig Conway told the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority he could have signed for an Old Firm club and earned £500,000 a year.
He was eventually awarded more than £260,000 in 2010 and used the cash to set himself up in business.

And the pain of the attack fuelled him and he has just been crowned Best Independent Motor Dealer at the 2025 Scottish Business Awards for his Cardonald-based firm Woodville Cars.
John told the Scottish Sun: 'It was a job to start with and then when I started doing something right, I got a buzz out of that.
'I was always wanting to be a football player, I tried my best, I wouldn't do the teenager thing and get drunk or whatever, I trained and I worked my best.
'I gave it 110 per cent. I didn't know any other thing. As stupid as it sounds, if a wee granny comes in and books you, you've got to get that right, I'm not taking that car out unless it's checked and double checked.
'It comes back to treating other people like you'd like to be treated yourself. I don't even know who nominated me for this award but it means a lot.'

Chelsea set Nicolas Jackson asking price as Premier League club enter race

Chelsea have set a steep asking price for Nicolas Jackson after a Premier League club entered the race to secure his signature. Jackson enjoyed a relatively promising first season at Stamford Bridge following a £32m move from Villarreal in 2023, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. But the Senegal international went backwards last season, only scoring one Premier League goal in the second-half of the campaign. Wastefulness in front of goal has not been his own problem, either, with Jackson seeing red in two of his last five appearances, including in Chelsea's Club World Cup defeat to Flamengo. Jackson started that game from the bench as Enzo Maresca handed new signing Liam Delap his first Chelsea start since his £30m move from Ipswich Town. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. It was recently suggested by ex-Chelsea star John Obi Mikel that Jackson would remain Maresca's first-choice striker next season ahead of Delap, who scored more goals than his new teammate for a team that were relegated from the Premier League. But Chelsea have seemingly already decided to put their faith in Delap and are therefore open to offers for Jackson. On Saturday, it was reported that Juventus had opened talks with Chelsea to discuss a deal for the 24-year-old. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says an unnamed Premier League club are also showing interest in Jackson, who Chelsea value at between €55-60m. Given Chelsea's steep asking price of around £50m, Juventus are ready to turn to other targets unless the Blues shown a willingness to lower their demands. 'I think Nicolas Jackson has definitely been disrespected. I think he's the focal point and a real presence up there. 'He occupies the centre-halves and takes them back to create space for the likes of Cole Palmer to come into. 'Palmer, in particular, profited off the space that Jackson created him. Enzo [Fernandez] as well. I think Enzo is a better No. 10 than a No.8 and when he gets forward he's a real goal threat. 'But they need someone who is going to lead the line and occupy the centre-halves and create that space for them. 'He's been a huge miss. He's not a prolific goalscorer but he's certainly a threat and they can't replace him. 'They've got nobody like him to come in – they've tried it with [Christopher] Nkunku or playing with Pedro Neto as a false nine but it's not worked. 'Sometimes as a manager you have to find a different way. I just think they're a bit to predictable on the ball, playing sideways and backwards, but perhaps there isn't the options forward when the midfield players look up. 'Jackson would normally be stretching the opposition in behind or they could play longer into his chest and have him hold the ball up. They haven't had that in his absence so he's been a huge miss.' Ex-Premier League manager Tim Sherwood speaking to Metro After being sent off in Chelsea's second Club World Cup fixture, Flamengo boss Filipe Luis backed Jackson to develop into one of the best strikers in the world. When asked about Jackson's red card, Filipe Luis said: 'First of all, I love Chelsea. 'I spent one really happy season there, we won the Premier League and the League Cup and I made special friends and played with the best players in the world for a season, and I was really happy there. More Trending 'So I know how the club is special and how the club needs to win titles because of the pressure inside the club, it happens. 'But he [Jackson] is so good, he's young, he has all the potential and quality the club needs. 'For sure, he will surpass this little mistake. I think it was clear, I just saw it in front of me, I haven't seen it on the TV yet, but for me it was a red. 'But it is just a small detail for a player who is a big player, he can be one of the biggest strikers in the world.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Bob MacIntyre ends Travelers in stunning style to make more key Ryder Cup moves as he sets immediate goal

Scottish star delivers final flourish at TPC River Highlands to end seven-week US run in style Buoyant Bob MacIntyre delivered a searing sign-off from his seven-week sequence in the States as he finished with a fabulous flourish at the Travelers Championship. The Scottish star completed his latest impressive spell on the PGA Tour with a brilliant late-Sunday burst to boost his finale at TPC River Highlands. ‌ MacIntyre played his last four holes of his tournament in four-under par to card a Sunday 66 and surge up the final standings in Connecticut with his best round of the week. ‌ Understandably, after such an epic performance, he was unable to recreate the scintillating magic of Oakmont the previous week and get into title contention as he had done when coming within a whisker of winning the US Open before being dramatically pipped at the death by winner JJ Spaun. But the Oban star still delivered mostly-strong work before the thrilling finale which has secured another positive step forward in the race for the FedEx Cup play-offs and, more crucially, the The Ryder Cup team. MacIntyre's Oakmont display rocketed him to fourth place in the European List and he cemented that excellent effort by banking more valuable points in Cromwell. Staring the week, the Tartan ace was one place behind Shane Lowry and one ahead of Sepp Straka in the List heading into the tournament and finished well ahead of both the Irishman and the Austrian in the closing positions at the Travelers to make more key ground. The 28-year-old went into the 28th and final competitive round of his gruelling seven-successive week spell on the two-under par mark and exchanged shots with the course to stay on that number through 14 holes of his final effort before the flying late flurry. MacIntyre first jumped forward with a chip-in eagle three on his 15th, the par-five sixth on the course as he started from 10th tee due to weather delays and restructured tee-times, to lift his position and backed it up immediately with a long-birdie putt at the next to stretch to five-under par. ‌ Following a par on his penultimate hole, MacIntyre concluded with another birdie at his last hole to cap the week and the lengthy spell of events in perfect fashion. The Scot's work has seen him take in the Truist Championship, PGA Championship, Charles Schwab Challenge, Memorial, RBC Canadian Open and US Open before this Travalers and MacIntyre will now return home for a short break before the defence of his Genesis Scottish Open title and The Open Championship at Royal Portrush the following week. Former Ryder Cup star David Howell is convinced the Scot can have a strong run in Northern Ireland having come sixth at the course in 2019 in his debut Open. He said: 'Yes [Scottie] Scheffler is going to be the favourite for that Championship, of course. But he is made for links golf, Bob MacIntyre. And he has proved to himself last week that he can win a Major because, when he had the chance, he did everything right. So he'll have his own expectations to deal with, but surely we'll have a good performance from him.' MacIntyre made it clear in the immediate aftermath of Oakmont that he isn't shying away from the Major challenge and admitted it has handed additional belief as he said: 'There's no reason why I can't win a major championship in my career and that's my goal now. I said I wanted to win the Scottish Open and I got that. I just want to win Majors now.'

Shinty: Oban Camanachd storm to victory in Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup final

Oban Camanachd flexed their muscles, displaying the depth of their fully fit squad, before running out 6-1 winners over Kyles Athletic in the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup final at Peterson Park. Daniel MacVicar's shot low across the keeper from the right to put the Oban side ahead before Malcolm Clark touched Lorne Dickie's hit-in home to make it 2-0 at the turnaround. James Pringle lost his marker as he ran left before pulling a goal back, but Ross Macmillan sprinted onto Daniel MacVicar's ball forward to beat keeper Iain MacFarlane to make it 3-1. Substitute Daniel Maccuish and Ross Campbell put gloss on the win. Daniel Maccuish juggled the ball by defender and keeper for a brilliant individual effort before Ross Campbell hammered home two fine strikes from the left. Oban Camanachd captain Daniel MacVicar was outstanding throughout, and he stepped forward to collect shinty's oldest trophy from Glasgow Celtic Society president Donald Fletcher. This was Oban Camanachd's third successive Celtic success, their longest winning run since they took south shinty's main prize for eight successive seasons between 1987 and 1994. Oban Camanachd boss Daniel Cameron has now won this trophy as player, captain and manager and he said: 'I knew we had the depth of squad today and that's something we haven't had this season. 'To have the luxury of bringing on a Scottish international like Daniel MacCuish shows where the squad is at just now. 'At the start of the season, people said we'd struggle after losing 6 or 7 players, but we'll let people talk. We have our own in-house goals, and we'll keep them to ourselves, but they will be our focus.' Kingussie will meet Newtonmore in the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals after both won their last-eight ties. Dylan Borthwick gave Kingussie an early lead at Lovat before Greg Matheson levelled. Dylan Borthwick scored again, but Callum Cruden blasted home a disputed penalty to make it 2-2. Savio Genini chipped in with another vital goal, scoring the winner with five minutes remaining. Kingussie manager Iain Borthwick said: 'We were flying during the first half-hour and could have been well ahead but for their keeper Ronan Macmillan. 'The second half was more even so it was a relief to see Savio's shot hit the net. The semi-final should be a cracker.' It took extra-time before Newtonmore saw off Skye 3-1. The Islanders led through Archie Millar, but Iain Robinson equalised soon after. Goals in the second half of extra-time from Conor Jones and Iain Robinson again sent More through. Manager Peter Ross said: 'I thought we'd more pressure but Skye were always dangerous. 'They aren't far away from being a side that can win things. We won it with a wonder save from Kenny Ross from Dan MacDonald and a wonder goal from Conor Jones after good play from Declan Brannan who got stronger and stronger as the tie went on.' Oban Camanachd face Glasgow Mid Argyll in the other semi-final. Fort William are two points clear at the top of the Mowi Premiership after beating Kinlochshiel 3-1. Arron Jack put Shiel ahead but Lachie Shaw equalised before half-time. Hamish Shaw put the Fort ahead soon after the restart and a late second from Lachie Shaw sealed victory. Fort William co-manager Alan Knox said: 'We were against the wind during an even first half, but we played some lovely shinty after that and dominated from there. I thought their keeper Josh Grant made some outstanding saves.' Kilmallie go third in the Mowi National Division after beating Glenurquhart 2-1. Full forward Martin Stewart dropped deep to lay the ball off to Ben MacKinnon who sent a blistering 30-yard strike by Stuart MacKintosh in the visiting goal to put Kilmallie ahead. Martin Stewart was again the provider as Archie MacNiven smashed home the second from the left. Daniel Maclean pulled a goal back, but it wasn't enough.
