Original copy: While it remains to be seen what - if anything - might happen with the Switch 2 price in the US, Nintendo fans should still be able to express interest in Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders soon.
Nintendo's official guide page on how to buy the Switch 2 says, "The first batch of invitations will go out starting May 8, 2025," and "additional batches of invitation emails sent periodically until purchasing on My Nintendo Store is opened to everyone."
The invitation requirement previously outlined by Nintendo remains unchanged from other regions, including a Nintendo Switch Online membership of at least 12 months and a minimum of 50 in-game hours total, as of April 2, 2025.
There's no word on whether the previously unveiled $450 price tag is staying the same, but it's possible it won't change. Analyst David Cole, founder of games industry marketing and research firm DFC Intelligence, speculates that Nintendo will "stick with the $450 price" despite tariff concerns, believing the number "was reached with the threat of tariffs already looming." Other experts seem to agree, too.
Bernstein analyst Robin Zhu is one such person, with expectations of Nintendo maintaining its original price for the Switch 2 if the new 10% levy on most US imports stays the same, saying that "Nintendo probably keeps pricing at $450 and just takes the hit on margin." There's no telling what the price will be until those hotly anticipated pre-orders finally go live in May, though – but I'll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed.

The treasure trove of platinum on the moon

The moon is likely to become the next mining hot spot, as there may be extensive platinum and other metal deposits in its craters. Guidelines about resource mining on the moon are still not solidified, so this could lead to problems with more countries and private companies trying to stake their claim. But the potential for platinum could also entice private companies to invest more in space exploration. There might be more than $1 trillion worth of platinum deposits on the moon, according to a paper published in the journal Planetary and Space Science. Of the 1.3 million craters on the moon with a diameter greater than one kilometer, "nearly 6,500 were made by asteroids containing commercial quantities of platinum," said New Scientist. This "highlights the potential viability and profitability of lunar mining endeavors compared to mining asteroids in orbit," said the paper. Countries have already been involved in a modern space race to put humans back on the moon, and the profit potential could bring more interested parties. Nobody owns the moon because of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. But as the potential for resources becomes imminent, the rules are likely to change. The treaty notably "leaves key questions unanswered," Rebecca Connolly, an adjunct senior lecturer at the University of Sydney Law School, said to New Scientist. This includes "clarity on the rules and governance for ownership of extracted resources, commercial licensing rights, equitable benefits sharing, environment protection standards to avoid harm, and regulations for long-term occupation and permanent infrastructure on the moon." To address some of the unknowns, NASA and the U.S. spearheaded the Artemis Accords in 2020. These "provide a common set of principles to enhance the governance of the civil exploration and use of outer space," said NASA. Though the accords are nonbinding, 55 countries have signed on as of last month. Russia and China, two of the most proactive countries trying to reach the moon, have not signed on. A monetary incentive for reaching the moon could change space exploration as we know it. Astronomy is "done to satiate our curiosity," Jayanth Chennamangalam, an astrophysicist and the lead author of the study, said to New Scientist. It has "very few practical applications" and is "mostly paid for by taxpayer money." If we can "monetize space resources, be it on the moon or on asteroids, private enterprises will invest in the exploration of the solar system." While that could lead to wider research being done, it can also lead to the exploitation of the moon. It was recently listed as a threatened historic site for this very reason. "Take one last good look at the moon tonight," Luis Prada said at Vice. "There might be a time when the moon is not so innocent and pretty anymore and you only see cynical corporate greed."

In the U.K., supply levels have been significantly better, with more frequent Switch 2 restocks, some of which have lasted for hours, if not multiple days. U.K. gamers shouldn't have much trouble buying a Switch this week. The Nintendo Switch 2 costs $449 / £395 standalone or $499 / £429 bundled with a copy of the popular launch game, Mario Kart World. My Nintendo Store is using an invite system to allocate its available Switch 2 stock. You will need to meet specific criteria, including having a Nintendo Switch Online account and then be selected and sent an invite to order the console. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Nintendo Store Antonline's Switch 2 listings have a "coming soon" message. This could be a sign that the tech retailer is planning to restock the console in the near future, though that message has been there quite a while now, so it's a little puzzling. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Antonline Newegg's Nintendo Switch 2 pages are live, but there's currently no stock. Newegg may restock the console soon, but nothing is confirmed yet, so this is another one to watch closely for now. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Newegg Sam's Club has a listing page for the Nintendo Switch 2, which currently advises the console is "coming soon." This could be an indication that the retailer is planning to take Switch 2 orders in the near future, so be sure to watch this space. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is practically guaranteed to be the most in-demand Switch 2 accessory, and it packs a suitable upgrade over its predecessor adding a headphone jack, the new "C" button, and customizable back buttons. It's modeled after the iconic Piranha Planet from the Super Mario series and offers all the same features, plus you can close the Piranha's head to give yourself some privacy as needed. Huge caveat: it's resolution maxes out at 480p, whereas the Nintendo camera is retailers: Best Buy You don't need the Switch Joy-Con 2 Wheel to enjoy games like Mario Kart World, but it'll sure make the experience much more fun. It's big enough so you can carry the Switch 2, Nintendo Switch 2 dock, Joy-Con 2 controllers, various cables, and up to six game retailers: Best Buy | GameStop The Switch 2 comes with an increased storage capacity of up to 2TB.
