Statehood: Omar says waiting for PM, HM to fulfil promise
Jammu, June 20 (UNI) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said he was waiting for the fulfilment of the promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
'Will see whether we have to go legally or not for statehood but till then, we are waiting for the Prime Minister and the Home Minister as they have assured that statehood will be restored to Jammu and Kashmir,' Abdullah told media at an event.
To strengthen public outreach and grievance redress, Abdullah on Friday inaugurated a new Raabta office here at Canal Road after one is functioning in Srinagar (Kashmir valley).
On the issue of reservation in the recruitment, Abdullah however, lashed out at the former J&K Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti stating, 'how much she (Mehbooba Mufti) is speaking on this? Where was she when she had the opportunity to raise this issue?'
'When she was contesting elections from Anantnag constituency and seeking votes from Rajouri-Poonch, why did she prefer silence on this matter? Why did the People's Conference leader, Sajjad Lone, who was close to the BJP, not speak on the reservation issue then?' said Abdullah.
He, however, maintained that the Cabinet Sub-Committee framed by his government has submitted its report on reservation issue to the Law Department for remarks before taking a final call thereafter.
Moreover, on giving water access to the neighbouring Punjab by Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister said, 'I am not in favour of this. There is a drought-like situation in Jammu, so first, let us use our water for ourselves.'
'Under Indus Water Treaty, Punjab already had water. Did they give us water when we needed it, then why should I send water to Punjab?,' said Abdullah while reacting to the 113 km-long canal proposed for redirecting additional water from three western rivers of the Indus system in Jammu and Kashmir to Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan.
Meanwhile, on opening of Raabta office in Jammu, Abdullah said, 'We want to reach out to people and after the successful response in Kashmir, we wanted to have a similar office in Jammu as well so that the grievances can be taken via both online and offline modes and can be addressed without any delay.'

Iran's key advisory body denounces Trump's calls for Iranian surrender, says it's not an option
Tehran, June 20 (UNI) Iran's Expediency Discernment Council, a key institution in the country's political structure, has strongly condemned US President Donald Trump's remarks on Iran to either surrender or 'face the slaughter', declaring that surrender or accepting imposed peace is not an option, reports Iran International. The administrative advisory body said "Trump and the dreamers of the camp supporting the false Zionist regime must know that the surrender of the great Iranian nation or acceptance of an imposed peace is a futile illusion and an unattainable fantasy." The council reaffirmed the country's resolve to defend its national and ideological principles under the leadership of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. It criticised Trump's call for an unconditional surrender as irrational and dismissive of Iran's strength. Trump has been considering giving Israel direct US military aid, making Washington an active participant in the ongoing conflict. Iran has warned that any US interference will be met with serious repercussions, and has threatened to block the Hormuz Strait, which is crucial for global maritime trade, controlling over one-third of the world's oil supply. Blocking it could potentially give Iran an unprecedented edge in the conflict, giving it leverage. The Expediency Discernment Council (EDC) is an administrative assembly in Iran appointed by the Supreme Leader, established to resolve conflicts between the Majlis (parliament) and the Guardian Council. It was created in 1988. It plays a major role in formulating macro policies of the Islamic regime, and serves as a mediator between different branches of government and advising the Supreme Leader on key policy matters. Iranian FM condemns Israeli attacks at UN meeting
Geneva, June 21 (UNI) Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned Israeli attacks on the country at a United Nations meeting here on Friday. Speaking at the 59th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Araghchi said that Israel has launched "an unprovoked aggression" against Iran. Araghchi is in Geneva for a meeting with his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany, with an EU representative also attending. Araghchi pointed out in his speech at the UNHRC meeting that Israel has been committing "a horrible genocide in Palestine," and now it is waging aggression against Iran. Israel is committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, he said. Iran's nuclear facilities have also been targeted, despite their being under monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Araghchi noted. Such attacks not only constitute a violation of international law, but could also trigger serious radioactive leaks with catastrophic environmental and public health consequences, he added. Araghchi noted that Iran was supposed to meet the United States on June 15 for peaceful resolution of Iran's nuclear issue. The Israeli attacks, he said, represent a betrayal of diplomacy and a blow to the UN system. Shortly before the UNHRC session, Daniel Meron, Israel's permanent representative to the UN Office at Geneva, addressed the media. Meron said that Israel has to act now to eliminate the "existential threat" posed by Iran, stressing that Israel only attacks military objectives and strategic weapons, and that target selection is carried out responsibly and meticulously. In response to the meeting between the Iranian foreign minister and the European officials, Meron said Israel expects the European officials to "take a firm stance" on Iran and demand a complete rollback of the nuclear program, the dismantling of ballistic missile arsenal and program, among others. High-level Japan-US meeting cancelled over defence spending demands: Reports
Tokyo, June 21 (UNI) Tokyo cancelled "two-plus-two" security talks with the United States after Washington asked Japan to boost defence spending to 3.5 percent of the GDP, the Financial Times newspaper reported citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had planned to meet with their Japanese counterparts, Defence Minister Gen Nakatani and Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, on July 1 in Washington. The Financial Times said on Friday that Tokyo scrapped the meeting after a demand was made in recent weeks by US Defence Department's official Elbridge Colby for Japan to increase defence spending to 3.5 percent of its GDP, instead of the 3 percent asked for earlier. The newspaper specified, citing a senior Japanese official, that the decision to cancel the planned meeting was also related to the election to the upper house of Japan's parliament. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party is expected to lose seats in the upper house election, set for July 20. Earlier in June, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called on NATO member states to increase their defence spending from the current 2 percent to 3.5 percent of their respective GDPs, and spend another 1.5 percent on infrastructure development, defence industry and other security-related investments. US President Donald Trump previously demanded that NATO allies spend 5 percent of GDP on defence. Japan is not a member of NATO, but is one of NATO's partners in the Indo-Pacific region. The Hague will host the NATO summit from June 24-25. Media reports have suggested that the allies will focus primarily on NATO defence spending during the summit. UNI SPUTNIK ARN
