Vidarbha Pro T20 League: Giving players freedom is key to success, says NECO Master Blaster's Jitesh Sharma
Master Blaster's batter Jitesh Sharma feels that the freedom given to young players has been a defining factor in the team's resurgence and overall performance in the ongoing Vidarbha Pro T20 League.
NECO Master Blaster have qualified for the semi-final of the Vidarbha Pro T20 League and are raring to go. After losing the first match, NECO Master Blaster won three matches on trot to make a comeback.
Aryan Meshram has been the standout performer, smashing three half-centuries and anchoring crucial wins for the side. Alongside him, R Sanjay has also made significant contributions, helping the team stay consistent with the bat.
Speaking after the team's qualification for the knockouts, Jitesh said, 'When you give freedom to the talent, this is what happens. Aryan Meshram is one such example. That's why giving freedom to juniors and upcoming players is important – so that they can enjoy the game and express themselves on the field.'
Reflecting on the team's mindset, Jitesh added, 'I've told my teammates – go and enjoy on the field. If you love hitting sixes, go hit sixes from the first ball. It doesn't matter if you get out. I'm proud of my batters for the way they've responded to this approach.'
However, while the batting has flourished under this fearless style of play, Jitesh acknowledged that bowling remains an area of concern. 'One thing we need to work on is our bowling. As we head into the semi-finals, it's important we tighten up in that department,' he said.

1 2 3 4 Nagpur: After playing a key role in RCB's IPL triumph a month back, Jitesh Sharma is set to leave Vidarbha. Sources said that the big-hitting wicketkeeper-batter, who justified his Rs11 crore price tag with a string of stellar shows, will play for Baroda in the next domestic season. A source informed that Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) on Friday received a request for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Jitesh. A player has to obtain a NOC from his home association for shifting base to a new team. Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) officials confirmed that Jitesh will be joining their team in the next season. After making his First Class debut for Vidarbha in October 2015, Jitesh got just 18 matches in the longer format in the last one decade. Many feel he is a much better player than the number of First Class matches he got to play for Vidarbha. "Same was the case with his leadership quality. Vidarbha never fully utilised his captaincy skills. It was only after his exploits in the IPL, first for Kings Punjab and RCB in the last edition, that he has finally managed to command respect — which he always deserved — within the Vidarbha setup," a source said. Punjab Kings were the first to appoint Jitesh as vice captain and then captain in 2024 IPL. Before that Jitesh never got any leadership role in Vidarbha's senior cricket. Post the IPL, Jitesh led Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and took the team to quarterfinal stage. In Vidarbha's next tournament, Vijay Hazare Trophy, he played under Karun Nair. SARWATE TO PLAY FOR CHHATTISGARH Former Vidarbha allrounder Aditya Sarwate, who played for Kerala last season, confirmed that he will move to Chhattisgarh for the upcoming season. The left-arm spinner and solid lower-order batter said that due to family commitments he wanted to move to a team based near Nagpur. "My move to Chhattisgarh has been finalised. I look forward to the new challenge after a fruitful outing with Kerala," Sarawate told TOI. Sarwate's allround performance had propelled Vidarbha to twin Ranji Trophy titles in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. Last year, Sarwate was one of the standout performers for Kerala as they made it to their first Ranji Trophy final. The title clash, played at Nagpur, saw Vidarbha clinch their third Ranji Trophy on the basis of first innings lead. Sarwate had snapped 40 wickets in his first and only season for Kerala.

The 31-year-old Jitesh, who has played nine T20Is for India (100 runs@14.28), was a star performer for IPL-2025 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (261 runs in 15 matches@37.28, with one fifty and a strike rate of 176.35, including a top score of 85 not out in a league stage match and a crucial cameo off 24 off 10 balls in the final against his former IPL team Punjab Kings. Star India batter Karun Nair, who is all set to make a return to the Test fold after eight years, is on the verge of leaving Vidarbha to move back to Karnataka, as the domestic transfer season begins with just over two months to go for the 2025-26 season to start, according to a report in Cricbuzz. Not just Nair, but Vidarbha is also set to lose the services of IPL 2025 winner Jitesh Sharma, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's star wicketkeeper-batter, as he too is contemplating a move to Baroda. Vidarbha were the champions in the Ranji Trophy, runners-up in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and quarterfinalists in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2024-25 season. Vidarbha's domestic success last year was built on strong batting contributions from Nair and Jitesh, with the former playing a crucial role. Nair scored 863 runs in the Ranji Trophy, the fourth-highest in the event and topped the charts in the Vijay Hazare one-day tournament with 779 runs. Nair had left Karnataka ahead of the 2023-24 season, but according to the report, he will return to the state for personal and family reasons. KSCA sources confirmed to Cricbuzz that Nair's return is a strong possibility. The star Indian batter led Vidarbha in the Vijay Hazare last year. Sources within BCA have confirmed to Cricbuzz that the transfer of Jitesh from Vidarbha to Baroda should be completed within a day or two. Jitesh led Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and played under Nair in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but couldn't make much of an impact. Jitesh enjoyed a successful Indian Premier League season with RCB and delivered some match-winning innings, including a 10-ball 24 in the final. Baroda Cricket Association officials have said that Jitesh will play in both red-ball and white-ball formats for the state side. Last year, Karnataka won the Vijay Hazare defeating Nair's Vidarbha, but couldn't make the knockouts in the Syed Mushtaq Ali. In the Ranji Trophy, Karnataka couldn't reach the knockouts.
