Des Moines has America's best brewpub
DES MOINES, Iowa — When Whitney Selix and her husband, Scott, opened Lua Brewing Company just over five years ago, they had no idea just how wild their initial ride would be.
'We opened in November, and the pandemic shut us down in March,' she said. 'Fortunately, we'd built a good base of customers in that short time and they helped us get through.'
Five years later, Lua loyalists have stepped up again.
The Sherman Hill brewpub won USA Today's Reader's Choice Award for the best brewpub in the country.
'I was kinda shocked,' said general manager, Pete Holmgren. 'The other employees and I were voting every day but I wasn't sure we really had a chance.'
Readers Choice nominees are submitted by a group of travel writers and food critics associated with USA Today. Readers can then vote once per category per day to support their favorite nominees.

Iowans are known to rush to online polls to support their favorites, but other 'Best Brewpub' finalists came from much larger cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Sacramento.
By definition, a brewpub serves beer it makes on the premises alongside a full menu. Lua is neither Des Moines' oldest brewpub (Court Avenue Brewing Company), nor even its largest in Sherman Hill (Big Grove). Still, it seems to have made a unique space for itself in a highly-competitive market.
'We've always just kind of marched to the beat of our own drum,' Selix said, 'and kind of done what we thought was cool and fun. It seems to be working.'
Holmgren says Lua has cycled through more than 400 beers in the last five years and has tripled the size of its initial food menu. The secret, he says, is to keep rolling with changes.
'No day is the same, you know? Two days ago it was 60 degrees and we were packed for a Hoyt Sherman show. And today we won best brewpub and we just had a blizzard and there's not a single person in here,' he laughed.

What's next for Bahama Breeze? Owners say big change is coming.
A little over a month after 15 locations were abruptly closed, owners of the Caribbean-inspired chain signal the brand could soon come to an end. Owners of the Bahama Breeze restaurant chain signaled this week that the brand is no longer a priority, and they are considering selling the Caribbean-inspired chain a little over a month after shuttering over a dozen locations. Darden Restaurants CEO Ricardo Cardenas said in an earnings call on Friday, June 21 that they "will be considering strategic alternatives" for Bahama Breeze, such as selling the brand to a new owner or "converting restaurants to other Darden brands." "After further review, we have made the difficult decision that these remaining locations and the Bahama Breeze brand are not a strategic priority for us," Cardenas said in the call. The company abruptly closed down 15 restaurant locations in mid-May, leaving what they call their 28 "highest performing" restaurants currently in operation. The company has not issued a projected timeline of either a sale or restaurant conversions and has not disclosed if there is an interested buyer. Cardenas said the company does not expect a potential sale to have a "material impact" on their financial results. The restaurants first opened in the 90's in Florida, where half of their remaining locations remain. Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia all have two locations, according to the chain's website, while the states of Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, South Carolina and Washington have one location. Burlington set to open new Michigan locations. Where they will be
Michigan shoppers, get ready to welcome more Burlington stores this summer. The New Jersey-based discount department store chain will open two new locations in the state this summer, USA TODAY reported. The stores in Brighton and Burton are expected to open July 25. Burlington plans to open about 100 new locations by the end of 2025, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Kristin Kendrick Wolfe told USA TODAY on June 9. The retailer has already opened 22 locations in both rural communities and major metropolitan areas in 2025, Wolfe said. More expansions will be coming in 2026. "In fact, Burlington is on track to grow to 2,000 stores nationwide," Wolfe said in a statement. "We're excited to keep growing and bringing amazing deals on top brands to shoppers across the country." Here's what to know. Burlington will open new locations in Brighton and Burton. The two new Burlington stores in Michigan will open July 25, 2025. Each new store will include Burlington's new store layout and the company's new motto that reads "Deals. Brands. WOW!," USA TODAY reported. "The refreshed store layout provides a better and more enjoyable shopping experience, making it easier for consumers to discover deals and savings on their favorite brands," Wolfe said.
