Verstappen fastest in first Canadian GP practice
Red Bull's Max Verstappen led first practice for the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix on Friday while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc crashed and runaway leaders McLaren made a comparatively slow start to the weekend.
Four-time world champion Verstappen, last year's winner at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and chasing an unprecedented fourth successive Canadian victory, lapped in 1:13.193 seconds on a bright afternoon.
Williams' Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz were second and third fastest respectively, with the Briton 0.039 slower than Verstappen and his teammate 0.082 off the pace and all using the soft tyres.
Mercedes' George Russell, who started on pole position in Canada last year, was fourth fastest with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton fifth and Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar sixth.
McLaren's Lando Norris was seventh with championship leading teammate Oscar Piastri 14th, and fined €100 (R2,069) for speeding in the pitlane, as the team tested upgrades including a new front wing.
The session was halted when Leclerc hit the barriers at the second chicane with 45 minutes remaining, causing extensive damage to his Ferrari.
The Monegasque still ended up 10th fastest.

Not long after his first day at Maranello — where he posed beside the iconic F40, Enzo Ferrari's final signed-off creation — Hamilton made headlines again by expressing a desire to one day bring a modern homage to life, rumoured to be called the 'F44'. But while that project brews in the background, Hamilton is clearly wasting no time enjoying what's already on offer. Invited by Ferrari to drive the F80 around the Fiorano test circuit, Hamilton joined current teammate Charles Leclerc for a high-speed session in the hybrid hypercar. And the verdict? As expected, glowing. 'Fastest road car I've ever been in,' the Brit enthused — quite the statement from someone who's piloted the Mercedes-AMG One, a car built with Formula 1 tech and a Nürburgring lap record under its belt. Clearly impressed, Hamilton even hinted at adding the F80 to his personal garage: 'Okay, I've got to order me some of these one day.' With only 799 examples planned and reportedly already spoken for, one would imagine Ferrari might still make a plan for its newest star signing. 'This is another level,' he added, calling it 'the fastest road car Ferrari has done.' Leclerc, meanwhile, is no stranger to the F80. The Monégasque driver was part of the hypercar's launch campaign, having previously driven it at Fiorano shortly after its official reveal. Before his departure from the team, Carlos Sainz Jr. also sampled a camouflaged prototype and gave it his stamp of approval. Now racing for Williams, the Spaniard was one of the first to get a taste of the electrified machine. As for Hamilton, despite owning a Pagani Zonda (which he once described as 'terrible to drive' but praised for its soundtrack), the V6-powered F80 appears to have left a far greater impression — both in performance and refinement. He was not the only one to sit the premier out, as Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli had to head back to Italy to write his exams – clearly another hungry driver – just hungry for his education at this point. Oscar Piastri, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll also sat out the premier due to their own personal reasons while Verstappen laid down some times in the Aston Martin. Going under the alias 'Franz Hermann' when he's out racing GT3 cars, Verstappen could either just be training to become a better F1 driver or getting ready to make a pivot into a new career path. His unhappiness at Red Bull has not been a secret, amid car development challenges and key staff members, like designer Adrian Newey, leaving the Milton Keynes outfit. The Dutch-Belgian driver has also devoted a bit more time to his family since the birth of his new daughter, and could also explain his absence from the premier. But he did not miss the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix. The 2025 season, which marks a decade in F1 for Verstappen, has had its ups and downs – but most of it was spent chasing the tail end of papaya lightning. His win in Japan showed a level of driving that even shocked his own team, who knew the RB21 stood no chance against both McLarens. Then again at Imola, Verstappen pulled off not only a win, but a sizable lead ahead of Oscar Piastri in the McLaren, a bit of a flex to show off the new money Red Bull had dumped into the RB21's development post Newey. The paddock will pack up in New York and unload at the Red Bull ring in Austria next weekend, and Verstappen will have a chance to claim another victory in his home turf and add some much needed points toward his fifth title shot. Equalling Schumacher's record of five straight world titles is a feat still very much possible at this stage, especially with McLaren losing a bit of concentration in recent weeks. But he will have to deal with a determined George Russell and another hungry future champion in Antonelli. The Italian teenager has given Mercedes a fighting chance for the Constructors title this year, enough to rival the prowess of McLaren. Red Bull, on the other hand, can only put all their eggs in Verstappen's basket at this point – as the 'cursed' second seat bears no fruit for Christian Horner, who does not remember what a Constructors title tastes like. But many have speculated that Verstappen will call it quits after this season, and cannot invest his career into Red Bull's hopes and dreams in F1. He has stated that his interest in GT3 racing is real, and is also known to be a sim-racing expert – competing in 24-hour events online as well.

Toyota files R6. 5 billion lawsuit against KZN government for flood damages

Image: Supplied Toyota South Africa Motors has initiated a R6.5 billion lawsuit against the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, Transnet, and the eThekwini Municipality, claiming damages from the April 2022 floods that severely impacted its Prospecton plant. In summons filed in the Durban High Court, Toyota South Africa Motors Pty Ltd said it had suffered damages to the tune of R6.5 billion. This included costs in excess of R4 billion for repairs and reinstatement work at the storm-impacted plant and R2 billion for business interruption. Transnet, the KZN Department of Transport, and the eThekwini Municipality have been cited as the defendants. Craig Woolley, a director at law firm Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa Inc, which is acting for Toyota, said all three defendants had 'entered an appearance to defend.' In the court papers, Toyota said that the three organisations had failed in their duty to maintain infrastructure and should have known that neglecting such responsibilities could lead to flooding. During the April floods, the structural integrity of the Umlaas Canal and the diversion berm were compromised, leading to stormwater flowing into the Prospecton Industrial Area, where the Toyota plant is situated, causing extensive flooding and damage, read the court papers. It stated that Transnet owned the Umlaas Canal and was responsible for its management and maintenance, as well as the flood risk associated with it. The concrete-lined canal is intended to channel and divert the uMlazi River around the Prospecton Industrial Area. Together with the diversion berm, it forms an integral part of the flood control and prevention mechanism for the Prospecton Industrial Area, it further stated. It said the Department of Transport was responsible for the management and maintenance of the diversion berm, while the municipality owned, managed, and was responsible for the maintenance and control of the stormwater management system for the Prospecton Industrial Area. Image: Doctor Ngcobo Independent Newspapers Detailing its court action against each of the defendants, Toyota said Transnet should have known that in the event of the Umlaas Canal and the diversion berm failing to manage this stormwater, the Prospecton Industrial Area was likely to be flooded, resulting in damage to the company's premises and property. It said the defendants failed to ensure that these structures were functioning as required to prevent flooding in the Prospecton Industrial Area. Additionally, it had neglected to carry out regular maintenance on the Umlaas Canal, resulting in structural weaknesses, and failed to repair previous flood damage. It said it fell on the Department of Transport to ensure that the diversion berm and canal were functioning properly and it had failed to do so. It added that the municipality should have known that in the event of the stormwater management system not functioning as required, the area where the plaintiff's business was situated was likely to be flooded. 'As a result of these failures, Toyota was compelled to engage various contractors to repair the damage caused by the flooding and hired specialist engineers to repair the structural damage to the premises, as well as damage to electrical installations, plumbing, air conditioning, and assembly systems.' The company suffered 'damages to fixtures and fittings, office contents, and electronic equipment, and experienced losses due to vehicles being flooded and damaged.' Furthermore, they were unable to conduct business activities during the repair period, leading to additional business interruption losses. 'As a result of the aforementioned issues, Toyota claims to have suffered damages amounting to R6 540 980 194.00, which includes R4 488 642 693.00 for the fair and reasonable costs incurred in the repair and reinstatement of the plaintiff's premises and property and R2 052 337 501.00 for business interruption.' 'The defendants are jointly and severally liable to compensate the plaintiff for the aforementioned amounts, along with interest thereon,' stated the court papers. Ndabe Sibiya, the spokesperson for the KZN Department of Transport, said that MEC Siboniso Duma regarded Toyota as an important stakeholder in the province. 'Respectfully, he does not believe that it will be appropriate at this stage to engage on this matter through the media,' said Sibiya. 'We can only indicate that the cut-off low-pressure system continues to leave a trail of destruction across the province. It has triggered floods, mudslides, and a rise in the water table. Bridges, road infrastructure, and houses have been damaged, costing both the KZN Transport and Human Settlements Departments billions of rands. For instance, in 2022 alone, we needed more than R6 billion to repair roads, and we could only reprioritise R2 billion from our budget,' Sibiya said. eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the municipality was aware of Toyota's action and had filed a notice to defend.
