Alabama football 2025 season preview, predictions: Duke Johnson II
When looking at the Alabama Crimson Tide's 2025 football recruiting class, there are few position groups altogether that stick out more than at linebacker.
In the Crimson Tide's 2025 class, Alabama added a total of three linebackers, the highest-rated of which was Duke Johnson II, a talented prospect who was a two-way star in high school.
Johnson was also one of the first names to commit to Alabama in the class, and comes to Tuscaloosa as a name that could very easily make an impact in year one as a true freshman.
Here is everything you need to know about talented true freshman linebacker Duke Johnson II entering the 2025 Alabama football season.
Duke Johnson II player information
Position: Linebacker
Linebacker Jersey Number: No. 15
No. 15 Height: 6'1
6'1 Weight: 220
220 Class: Freshman
Freshman Hometown: Eastman, Georgia
Eastman, Georgia High School: Dodge County
Duke Johnson II career stats
Johnson is not only new to Alabama this season, but the linebacker is also a new face to college football overall. The 2025 season will be Johnson's first at the collegiate level.
Duke Johnson II 2024 stats
As mentioned previously, Johnson is new to college football this season, but is however coming off a strong year at the high school level in which he played both ways at Georgia's Dodge County High School. Defensively, Johnson amassed 122 tackles and 11 TFL across 11 games, while the now Alabama linebacker also rushed for 1,097 yards and 22 touchdowns on 115 carries, along with eight receptions for 129 yards and another score, on offense.
Duke Johnson II recruiting ranking
According to the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings, Johnson was considered as the nation's No. 130 overall player in the 2025 class, as well as the No. 9 linebacker nationally. A four-star prospect who committed to Alabama back in March of 2024, Johnson was also considered the No. 16 player in the state of Georgia out of Dodge County High School.
Duke Johnson II 2025 season outlook
There is no denying that Alabama's 2025 linebacker class is one that could make an impact in Tuscaloosa for many years to come, with Johnson as the highest-rated of that talented group.
As for 2025 in particular however, Alabama enters the season with two starters cemented at inside linebacker in the returning Deontae Lawson and Justin Jefferson, while Colorado transfer Nikhai Hill-Green is likely to play a massive role also. Because of this, Johnson is likely buried on the depth chart entering his true freshman season, meaning that the former four-star is not likely to see a significant amount of action defensively in 2025.
However, Johnson is a name that could make an impact on special teams this season in some form.
Duke Johnson II 2025 season prediction
2025 Prediction: 5 tackles, 0.5 TFL

Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 20 - Ed Johnson (1969-72)

The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the "New Jersey Americans". Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today. To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise's jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 21st of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 20, which has has had a total of 28 players wear the number in the history of the team. The fourth of those players wearing No. 20 played in the (then) New York (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, big man alum Ed Johnson. After ending his college career at Tennessee State, Johnson was picked up with the 34th overall selection of the 1968 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. The Atlanta, Georgia native would play the first season of his pro career with the (defunct) Los Angeles Stars in the ABA, and was dealt to New York in 1969. His stay with the team would span parts of two seasons, coming to an end when he was traded again, this time to the (also defunct) Texas Chaparrals in 1972. During his time suiting up for the Nets, Johnson wore only jersey No. 20 and put up 13.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.

Diontae Johnson supports ex-Steelers teammate, predicts Kenny Pickett to start for Browns

Kenny Pickett and Diontae Johnson have reunited on the Browns — and the ex-Steelers wideout believes his former QB will get the starting nod in Cleveland. On an episode of the Sports and Suits podcast, Johnson subtly explained that Pickett has been getting the Browns' starting QB reps: "I think [the Browns] are gonna roll with Kenny [Pickett] right now," Johnson said. "I've been seeing Kenny, right now, with the ones — and then Joe [Flacco] will come in. I think they're probably gonna roll with [Pickett], just like to see — coming off the season he was with Philly and having a Super Bowl." Johnson then addressed concerns over Pickett's hand size, claiming that the former Steelers QB "can spin it" even with gloves on. The Pickett-to-Johnson connection in Pittsburgh lasted just two years — as the Steelers traded Kenny "Two Gloves" to the Eagles, and Johnson to the Panthers in March of 2024. The two former Steelers teammates will look to play a major role in Cleveland's offense in 2025 — and they'll both get their first opportunity at a revenge game when the Browns head to Pittsburgh in Week 6 this upcoming season.
