BHUBANESWAR: Puri's royal family mourns as Ranarnab Deb, the younger sibling of King Dibyasingha Deb, passed away at age 67 following a prolonged illness.
Family sources confirmed his passing at about 12.30 am between Sunday and Monday at a private medical facility in Puri.
The last rites will be performed in Puri with full royal ceremonial honours. A senior Shree Jagannath Temple Administration official stated, "His demise will not affect his elder brother's 'seva puja' during Rath Yatra on June 27."
Many dignitaries expressed their grief at Deb's passing. Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi shared on 'X': "I am deeply saddened to hear about the demise of the Thata Raja of Puri, Ranarnab Deb.
My condolences to the bereaved family. May Lord Jagannath grant them patience and strength in this hour of unbearable grief. I pray at the feet of Lord Jagannath for the peace and solace of the departed soul."

To support on-the-spot testing, a mobile lab-on-wheel will be stationed in Puri. "Disinfection of all water sources is being done and will be intensified further in the coming days. Bhubaneswar: Raids were conducted on Tuesday at several restaurants in Bhubaneswar, Jajpur and Cuttack to assess the standard of hygiene amid the diarrhoea outbreak in parts of the State, officials said. Diarrhoea was first detected in Jajpur on June 9. Over 200 patients are still under treatment in different healthcare facilities in the district. A team, led by Darpan's tehsildar Manas Tripathy, conducted raids at eateries, sweet shops and hotels in Barchana town in Jajpur. 'We are checking the hygiene and quality of food served in eateries. If stale food was found, we issued a warning to the owner. If they continue to serve unhygienic or stale food, we will seal their shop,' he said. The local administration in Bari, Dharmasala, Vyasanagar and Binjharpur blocks has already shut down hotels, eateries, fast-food stalls, meat shops and water packaging units for a temporary period. Municipal authorities in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar have also started conducting raids after diarrhoea cases were detected in some pockets of the twin cities. Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation teams conducted raids at eateries in Kalinga Vihar and Delta Square areas. They collected food samples for testing and also fined some restaurant owners for not maintaining the quality, an official said. The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) sealed two hotels in Station Bazar after finding low-quality water and food served there, he said. Capital Hospital's Director, Rupabhanu Mishra, said a separate ward has been set up to treat diarrhoea patients. Meanhile, Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said the State government is fully alert and taking all precautionary arrangements to avoid spread of diarrhoea during the Rath Yatra, which is scheduled to commence from June 27. While speaking to mediapersons, Mahapatra said the Urban Development department is fully alert in view of the rising cases of diarrhoea in the State. 'Particular attention is being given to the town areas where Rath Yatra celebrations will take place. The department is on high alert to avoid any outbreak during the festival. Intensive surveillance and monitoring are being carried out to ensure that the public remains safe, and the festival is conducted smoothly,' said Mahapatra. 'Although no concrete evidence of contaminated water has been found so far, we are taking every precaution to avoid any health crisis,' added Mahapatra.

Health minister Mukesh Mahaling said that the govt has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign alongside strict enforcement actions against contaminated food and water sources. "We are making coordinated and sustained efforts to stop the spread of the disease," Mahaling said. Health secretary S Aswathy said approximately 10% of tested samples in the worst-hit Jajpur district have shown positive results for vibrio cholerae, the bacteria responsible for cholera. However, she noted an encouraging trend in recent days. "New patients reporting to hospitals are showing mild symptoms, indicating that our awareness initiatives are yielding results and people are seeking early medical intervention," she explained. Regular disinfection of various water sources is also being carried out extensively at the field level. To expand awareness programmes, NHM has also deployed 10 mobile awareness vans (IEC vans). Additional doctors, medical assistants, medicines and awareness pamphlets have also been sent to other affected regions and field-level awareness programs have been intensified, the govt statement said. Four state-level teams have been dispatched to oversee field-level implementation. These teams are composed of senior officials, specialists and advisors from the health and family welfare department. They will visit areas such as Bhuban, Banki, Dharmasala, Barachana and Bhandaripokhari to monitor field-level efforts and strengthen coordination among various departmental teams working on the ground. The focus is on water source purification, door-to-door campaigns, early identification and primary treatment of diarrhoea patients, distribution of medicines and halogen tablets and public awareness programmes, providing necessary guidance and assistance to make these initiatives more targeted, the govt statement said.
