Kristaps Porzingis Named in Celtics-Suns Trade Report After Kevin Durant News
Kristaps Porzingis Named in Celtics-Suns Trade Report After Kevin Durant News originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Kristaps Porzingis endured a challenging 2024-25 campaign with the Boston Celtics. Limited to just 42 regular-season games, the 7-foot-2 forward averaged 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, while shooting an impressive 48.3% from the field and a stellar 41.2% from three. However, his availability was hindered due to injuries and an upper-respiratory illness that flagged him down throughout the season.

Porzingis' health issues carried into the playoffs. In the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks, he averaged just 4.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in only 15.6 minutes per game, shooting a meager 24.0% from the field. Debilitated by lingering fatigue from his illness, he was unable to impact the Celtics' rotation meaningfully, paving the way for questions about his health and future role.

With Porzingis under contract for another year at a high salary, and the Celtics already managing luxury-tax commitments, there have been growing whispers that the 29-year-old could be one of the players Boston moves.
Amid this backdrop, NBA Insider Jake Fischer reports that the Phoenix Suns have been doing preliminary work on Porzingis.

'I've also heard that Phoenix has done some background work on Kristaps Porzingis with Boston known to be exploring its trade options up and down the roster," he wrote. "Sources say you can likewise add Phoenix to the list of teams that had been hoping to elbow its way into Myles Turner's free agency this summer.'
This comes on the heels of reports that Kevin Durant could be traded from Phoenix any day now, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. That move could give Phoenix some flippable assets and create a need for another floor-spacing seven-footer—making Porzingis a compelling match given his size and skill set.
If the Suns were to acquire Porzingis, he could offer them high-ceiling offense, complementary rim protection, and elite spacing. It will also be interesting to see if the Celtics would involve Durant in the trade package that sends Porzingis to Phoenix.

WNBA files trademarks for the name ‘Portland Fire' and stylized ‘P' logo
The WNBA filed trademarks for the name 'Portland Fire' and a stylized 'P' logo earlier this week, potentially indicating that the league's 15th franchise will revive the Fire name from the team that existed from 2000-02. The league's expansion to Portland was announced in September 2024, and the team will begin play in 2026 alongside the Toronto Tempo. The organization has teased an announcement for next month — a statement from a spokesperson for WNBA Portland reads, 'The countdown is on. We'll see you July 15!' The countdown is on ⏰ — WNBA Portland (@wnbaportland) June 20, 2025 If it does choose the name Fire, the new Portland team is hoping it doesn't carry the prior team's track record. The Fire had three unremarkable seasons during the WNBA's first decade, cracking .500 in their final year in the league and never qualifying for the playoffs. The franchise folded due to financial losses, one of six teams to fold by 2009. Advertisement The expansion Portland team hired Inky Son, formerly the chief administrative officer of the National Basketball Players Association, as its team president earlier this year and the organization's first employee. The organization also broke ground on its practice facility in April, a space that will be shared with the NWSL's Portland Thorns, who are also under the same ownership of RAJ Sports. However, while Toronto has hired a general manager and assistant GM among other employees, in addition to revealing its team branding, Portland has yet to build out its basketball operations staff. Both franchises will also have to hire head coaches before the expansion draft following the 2025 WNBA season. The league is still in the process of expansion and accepted bids for its 16th franchise through January. More than 10 groups submitted formal bids, but the WNBA has not yet announced a winner.

Yankees activate Luke Weaver after the right-hander missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees activated right-handed reliever Luke Weaver from the injured list Friday after he missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring. Weaver was injured warming up before a June 1 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. After being placed on the injured list, the Yankees thought Weaver might be out until early July or through the All-Star break. Instead, Weaver began feeling better quickly and said the pain disappeared shortly after the injury. He took his final steps in his rehab by throwing a simulated game on Tuesday after throwing side sessions. Weaver has a 1.05 ERA with eight saves in nine opportunities in 24 appearances. He ascended into the closer's role by converting six saves in seven chances after Devin Williams posted an 11.25 ERA in his first 10 appearances and was removed from that spot on April 27. A 31-year-old right-hander who can become a free agent this autumn, Weaver supplanted Clay Holmes as closer last September. From May 20-22, Weaver became the first Yankees pitcher to appear on three consecutive regular-season days since Aroldis Chapman in September 2021, though Weaver's first outing in that stretch lasted just two pitches, and the three totaled 18. Williams converted all four save chances while Weaver was injured and has a 1.76 ERA in his last 16 appearances since May 5. The Yankees cleared room for Weaver by optioning Jayvien Sandridge to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre. Sandridge was called up Thursday when Yerry De los Santos went on the injured list with right elbow discomfort. ___ AP MLB:

Mookie Betts reacts to Boston's ‘crazy' Rafael Devers trade
The Boston Red Sox have traded their best hitter to a team in the NL West – again. This past weekend, it was Boston dealing away Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Back in 2020, it was the Red Sox sending former MVP Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Advertisement So, how did Betts react to seeing his old team trading away another star in his prime? The Dodgers star sure seemed surprised, but didn't seem to want to touch on it any further. 'I just thought it was crazy,' Betts said, via The Athletic. 'Nothing really to say, it's just crazy.' The Devers trade came as a shock to fans in Boston, who just witnessed their team sweep the New York Yankees by playing some of their best baseball of the season. This type of move has become a recurring nightmare for Red Sox fans. First, it was the 2020 Betts trade. Then it was seeing Boston let Xander Bogaerts leave for the San Diego Padres in free agency. Advertisement Fans in New England will be in an uproar this year (and for years to come) as they witness another homegrown star land out west. Apparently, Betts will not be joining them in their outcry. 'I genuinely don't care,' Betts said, via The Athletic. 'It just is what it is.' News of the Devers broke shortly after the Red Sox beat the Yankees Sunday. Officially, Boston is sending their DH to San Francisco in exchange for four players: LHP Kyle Harrison, RHP Jordan Hicks, OF James Tibbs III and RHP Jose Bello. As things currently stand, it's not an impressive turn. But given the youth of the players Boston received, it will be a few years until we know how the Red Sox truly made out in the deal.
