In a move that could benefit over 4 million beedi workers in nearly 8,000 establishments covered under the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), the Union labour ministry is going to examine classifying the beedi industry as 'seasonal' establishments. The move will relax the 'non-contributory period' (NCP) norms under the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995 (EPS-95) for beedi workers, making it easier for them to qualify for pension benefits.
A non-contributory period (NCP) refers to a period when an employee is absent from work and does not receive wages. During such periods, no contribution is made to the employee's provident fund (PF)

Mumbai: A meeting was held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat in Nagpur's Hyderabad House. The 2027 Sinhastha Kumbha Mela in Nashik was the top agenda. The meeting focused on improving the road infrastructure to handle the surge in pilgrims in the city. The meeting was attended by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan. Also present were Minister of State Shivendra Raje Bhosale, other public representatives, and senior government officials. Highway Approvals And Centre's Support "We had requested the central government - I had personally requested the Prime Minister - that the road network required for the Kumbh should be taken up by the Centre. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari held a meeting on that issue," Mr Fadnavis said. He added eight major roads, including those from Sambhajinagar, Nagpur, Gujarat, Mumbai, Dhule, and Palghar, which will be used heavily during the Kumbh, have been approved. "Some internal roads that fall under the Centre's purview were also discussed. Nitin Gadkari has approved almost all of these roads. That's why road works on national highways are essential." Among the key projects discussed is the construction of a four-lane highway connecting Ghoti to Trimbakeshwar via Jawhar, with an estimated cost of Rs 3,700 crore. Additionally, there are plans to expand the Nashik-Sinnar stretch and upgrade national highways linking Nashik to other major cities, aiming to improve regional connectivity ahead of the 2027 Kumbh Mela. Dwarka Junction To Be Built In Two Phases "We are executing the project in two phases. The first will be completed before the Kumbh, and the second will begin afterward. This is to ensure no work remains unfinished during the event," Mr Fadnavis said, referring to the major bottleneck in Nashik. Mr Mahajan said the underpass at Dwarka is not being utilised efficiently. "We've directed MSRDC to come up with a new design. Work is expected to begin in the next three months," he added. Nashik Ring Road Update The Nashik Ring Road project, pending for years, has finally been cleared. "Instructions have been given to complete the project within 18 to 24 months," Mr Mahajan said. He said a new connection between Jalgaon and Sambhaji Nagar is under consideration, which will improve access to Mumbai. In addition, roads leading to pilgrimage hotspots like Shirdi and Shani Shingnapur will be upgraded to accommodate increased traffic.

Russian companies see India as base for setting up IT teams: Ashwini Vaishnaw

St Petersburg [Russia], June 22 (ANI): Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said many Russian companies are considering India as a base for creating their IT teams and that both countries can collaborate and lean in on each others' areas of expertise, TASS reported. 'A lot of Russian companies are now looking at India as a base for setting up IT teams. For example, Sberbank. They are setting up a base in Bengaluru. So a lot of opportunities are there for collaborating,' the Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology told TASS in an interview on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). The minister added that there are many areas for mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in the IT sector, the Russian state media reported. 'There are multiple areas for collaboration in IT. Of course, cybersecurity is one area where Russia has a lot of strengths. We can learn from each other. India has strengths in AI, IT systems management, and IT system programming. So both countries can really collaborate and learn from each other and to achieve a win-win solution for both,' Vaishnaw emphasised. The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) was held on June 18-21 and the theme for the event this year was 'Shared Values: The Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World.' The program included the SME Forum, the Creative Industries Forum, the Day of the Future International Youth Economic Forum, the Drug Security Forum, and the Roscongress Urban Hub discussion platform. Establishment of NFSU, CFSL will strengthen criminal justice system: Amit Shah in Raipur

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], June 22 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that the setting up of National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Nava Raipur would further advance and strengthen the criminal justice system of Chhattisgarh and central India. 'Today marks an important day for Chhattisgarh's criminal justice system. In a way, three new initiatives are being started to further advance the criminal justice system: The laying of the foundation stones for National Forensic Science University and Central Forensic Science Laboratory laid today, along with the transit campus of NFSU inaugurated,' Shah said while addressing the gathering here. 'The move will strengthen the criminal justice system in central India,' he said. Shah informed that the Chhattisgarh government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth Rs 5,000 crore at the investment summit held this year, which would bring industries to the state. 'Chhattisgarh's i-Hub has also been inaugurated. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth Rs 5,000 crore has been signed at an investment summit organised by CM Vishnu Deo Sai. The industries are coming. However, until the youth push themselves to be industrialists, Chhattisgarh will not witness an industrial revolution (development),' the Union Minister said. Talking about the Innovation Hubs in Chhattisgarh, the Union Home Minister encouraged the youth to pursue careers in starting industries and develop a culture that allows the state to grow. 'i-hub will ensure technical and financial help to the youths in establishing their startups. This will provide a major opportunity and platform for the youth of Chhattisgarh. Until the youth here becomes an MSME industrialist and develops a culture of this kind, Chhattisgarh cannot develop,' Shah added. Meanwhile, Shah informed that the NFSU campus will be constructed at Rs 145 crore, and the CFSL will be constructed at Rs 123 crore. 'The top forensic science institutes will be constructed at a total cost of Rs 268 crore. The state government has given land for the same.' The Union Home Minister shared details about the courses to be offered by NFSU and appealed to the youth to show confidence in the Narendra Modi government, assuring that employment is guaranteed after graduating from NFSU. 'Trust the Modi government, NFSU ka graduation matlab apki naukri ki guarantee hai (employment is guaranteed after graduating from NFSU),' Shah said, adding, 'The development of these institutions will reduce the dependency on big cities for forensic sample examination.' He lauded the Chhattisgarh government over implementation of new criminal laws, including Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). 'The Chhattisgarh government is working very well on the implementation of three critical laws. Implementing these laws will ensure that justice is served within three years of registering an FIR,' Shah said. (ANI)
