From India to Guinea: Indian railways to export 150 Bihar-made locomotives to Africa; 10 things to know about the Rs 3,000 crore deal

Time of India2 days ago

India is set to make a powerful statement in global railway manufacturing as it is set to began exporting more than 100 high-tech locomotives to West Africa.
Built under the 'Make in India' initiative in Bihar, these locomotives come equipped with world class facilities to ensure pilot comfort.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first export-bound unit this Friday, marking a major milestone for Indian manufacturing.
Here are the top 10 things you should know about the locomotives:
1. Global collaboration
The locomotives are being manufactured in collaboration between the US based Webtecin collaboration and Indian Railways at its Marhowra Rail Factory near Patna, Bihar. The Marhowra Rail Factory was set up in 2015 under a MoU to build 1,000 powerful freight locomotives in 10 years.
Wabtec delivered the first one in 2018, and has since supplied over 700 from this factory.
2. Massive deal
The Marhowrah Diesel Locomotive Factory in Bihar will export 150 Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives, to support Guinea's Simandou iron ore project. The order for 150 locomotives is worth over Rs 3,000 crore, secured through global competitive bidding.
3. Phased delivery plan
The locomotive delivery plan spans across three years. Of the 150 locomotives, 37 will be delivered in this financial year, 82 in the next, and the remaining 31 in the third year.
4.
Advanced technology
Each 4500 HP locomotive features AC propulsion, regenerative braking, microprocessor-based controls, and a modular architecture for ease of maintenance and upgrades.
5. World-class facilities
Each locomotive meets top-tier emission standards and has an AC cab. They are equipped with fire detection systems and eco-friendly technology. The cabins are modern and ergonomic, with added amenities like a refrigerator, microwave, and waterless toilet system.
"The Republic of Guinea asked us to provide all these amenities for the convenience of their train crew," a Webtec official told PTI.
6. Heavy loads and handling
Each locomotive comes with a single cab, two units coupled together can pull up to 100 wagons at top permitted speeds. They are fitted with DPWCS (Distributed Power Wireless Control System) to ensure smooth, synchronised operations and better freight handling.
7. Types of tracks at the factory
The Marhowrah plant houses three track types: broad gauge, standard gauge, and Cape gauge.
These tracks in the premises have been laid to support the manufacture and testing of locomotives for diverse international specifications.
8. Advanced technology
Each 4500 HP locomotive features AC propulsion, regenerative braking, microprocessor-based controls, and a modular architecture for ease of maintenance and upgrades.
9. Customisation
During a recent press briefing, Wabtec revealed that it conducted an in-depth study of Guinea's terrain, climate, and operational requirements before customising the locomotives.
Engineers made multiple visits to the West African nation to ensure the design met local needs, including adaptations for standard gauge tracks and extreme weather conditions. Given the region's harsh climate, the locomotives were customised to help combat the challenging environments.
10. Job creation
The Bihar-based factory employs 285 people directly and supports 1,215 more through indirect roles. Across India, over 2,100 individuals are engaged through the joint venture's wider services.
The export deal comes as the West African nation begins work on its biggest iron ore mining project, creating a demand for stronger freight support. This move boosts the Marhowrah factory's role as a rising global hub for locomotive exports, creating local jobs and highlighting India's growing manufacturing strength, a sign of Atmanirbhar Bharat driving global infrastructure with innovation and quality.

Solution to import dependence on vegetable oil does not lie in hiking MSP

India's pulses and vegetable oil imports touched a record 7.3 million tonnes (mt) and 16.4 mt, valued at $5.5 billion and $17.3 billion respectively, in 2024-25. Some of that may have had to do with the strong El Niño-induced drought of 2023-24, whose effects on food inflation extended right up to December 2024. It forced large-scale imports — in the case of pulses, from an average of 2.6 million during 2018-19 to 2022-23 to 4.7 mt and 7.3 mt in the following two fiscals. But the same cannot be said about vegetable oil imports, which have more than doubled from 7.9 mt in 2013-14. It's quite possible that pulses imports will reduce considerably in the current fiscal, assuming a normal monsoon. But that's unlikely with vegetable oils, where rising imports have attained a structural inevitability similar to petroleum crude and natural gas. In pulses, scientists have bred shorter-duration chana (chickpea) and photo-thermo insensitive moong (green gram) varieties, enabling farmers to grow these with minimal irrigation or in all four seasons. Much of the increased domestic pulses production after 2015-16, notwithstanding the setbacks of the last two years, has been courtesy of chana and moong. It has, then, limited the need for imports mainly to arhar (pigeon-pea) and urad (black gram): In a normal year, India can produce roughly 90 per cent of its consumption requirement. Such effort has been woefully lacking in oilseeds. Take soyabean, where the average per-hectare yield in India is hardly one tonne, compared to 2.6 tonnes in Argentina and 3.4-3.5 tonnes in Brazil and the US. Not allowing genetic modification in soyabean or mustard, with potential for raising yields, hasn't helped either. It's not surprising that the import dependence in vegetable oils is well over 60 per cent — and, at the current pace, set to rise further. The solution does not lie in hiking minimum support prices (MSP). MSPs have no meaning unless accompanied by physical procurement as with rice and wheat. But even that has limitations. The latest MSP for soyabean, at Rs 5,328 per quintal or $615 per tonne, is way above the landed cost of $400-450 for the same from Brazil and the US. What the government can do is to assure oilseeds and pulses farmers of a minimum income support, while setting this at a reasonable level that incentivises them to grow and even expand acreages under these crops. But there is no substitute ultimately for increasing yields and reducing cultivation costs — which has unfortunately not happened in oilseeds, unlike with rice, wheat or sugarcane.

Strong demand, stable activity in economy

India's economic indicators are becoming more supportive of growth, according to the report released by Motilal Oswal Private Wealth (MOPW) on Friday. The report highlights that several positive trends are emerging on the domestic front, including higher GDP growth, easing inflation, and strong tax GDP grew by 7.4 per cent in the fourth quarter of FY25, which is the highest reading in the last four has remained below 4 per cent for four consecutive months, and GST collections have been rising steadily. These signs indicate strong demand and stable activity in the formal sector of the report also notes that India's policy environment is now moving in a unified direction. Fiscal, monetary, and regulatory policies are all aimed at maintaining growth increased tax exemption limits that came into effect from April 2025 are expected to improve disposable incomes and boost the same time, the government's capital expenditure continues to rise, supporting the investment the global front, the environment remains mixed. In April and May, markets faced worries over tariffs and geopolitical tensions. However, the situation improved with a delay in global tariff implementation and a ceasefire announcement between India and Pakistan. This improved global sentiment has helped global equity markets, with the MSCI World Index reaching record highs. Meanwhile, rising bond yields in Japan and China's shift towards gold show that global investors are moving away from US could become a concern as the US faces refinancing of $9 trillion in debt this a weaker Dollar Index could help emerging markets like India by attracting more foreign investments. In the Indian stock market, valuations have increased as earnings have not grown at the same Nifty-50's one-year forward valuation has risen above its long-term average, and mid and small-cap stocks continue to trade at a premium. This makes careful stock selection and active management more important for investors looking to generate higher returns, the report stated.
