Just a day before Ju Haknyeon's departure from THE BOYZ, Eric was seen getting emotional upon meeting with their fans after his shoot.
THE BOYZ's Eric was seen getting emotional while meeting with a bunch of enthusiastic fans. And what first seemed like a sweet and thankful moment between them is now being looked at from a very different lens by the group's fans. They think that Eric was emotional because of the scandal involving his teammate Ju Haknyeon. As the incident happened just a day before the latter announced his hiatus, fans believe that Eric was sad because of that.
On June 16, after finishing filming an episode for Idol Radio, where he has been the DJ since January, with the project group DOUBLE ONE, he was on his way home when he greeted a group of fans waiting for him outside. He showed his usual warmth by greeting them with a smile and a wave from inside his car. However, after a point, fans noticed that the idol started getting emotional.
His eyes welled up, and he quickly covered his face with his hands, clearly trying to hide his emotions. Eric soon pulled back into the car so as to hide his face from his fans to avoid showing his vulnerable side to the public. At first, they thought that the 24-year-old singer and rapper was overwhelmed with love and gratitude.
But as soon as the news broke out about Ju Haknyeon's controversy and consequently of his hiatus, fans began to connect the dots between the two incidents. Many now believe that Eric got emotional because he knew what was about to happen to the group.
FYI, Ju Haknyeon got embroiled in a scandal following his private meeting with a former adult film star. According to sources, the idol was seen meeting Asuka Kirara, a retired Japanese AV (adult video) actress, at a private bar in Tokyo during a late-night gathering on May 29. In the wake of the incident, the idol was officially removed from THE BOYZ. His contract with One Hundred Label, a subsidiary of IST Entertainment, has also been terminated.
In response to the controversy, Ju Haknyeon posted a handwritten letter denying the claims of his involvement in any illegal activity. He apologised to his fans and even accepted that he attended a private gathering, but denied involvement in prostitution.
Following the controversy, the other THE BOYZ members, including Sunwoo, Younghoon, Q, Eric, Jacob, Juyeon, New, Hyunjae, and Kevin, released their individual statements through a fan communication platform, addressed to their fandom, called B, on June 18. Eric sincerely apologised to their fans 'for the recent string of bad news that has caused hurt and disappointment."
