Experts urge child-centered policies to spur Africa's inclusive education
ADDIS ABABA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Experts and policymakers have called on African countries to formulate child-centered policies to spur the inclusive participation of children in education and other vital sectors as a critical imperative in realizing a better continental future.
The call came during a high-level continental event, which was organized by the African Union (AU) on Monday under the theme of "Equity at the Heart of the AU Decade of Education," in connection with the celebration of this year's edition of the Day of the African Child that falls on June 16 each year.
Highlighting that the African continent continues to face "stark inequities" in education access, participation, and learning outcomes, the meeting underscored the need to exert concerted efforts in augmenting the participation of under-represented children, especially children with disabilities, girls, children in conflict-affected areas, and those from marginalized communities.
Madougou Saidou, director of education, science, technology and innovation at the AU Commission, called for continental actions toward the realization of the major aspirations of the AU's Decade of Education for Africa (2024-2034), including a more coordinated and streamlined "political will, strategic investment, and data-driven policy to transform educational trajectories in Africa."
The high-level webinar, among other things, highlighted the progress made by selected African countries in helping children enroll in school, as well as recent regional commitments to expanding access to quality education.
Zhang Yanhong, head of foresight and innovation at the Institute for Statistics of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, urged African countries to emulate the successful experiences of countries with best practices in aligning their financing and policy priorities.
He called for robust efforts at both national and continental levels to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Serving as an important platform for African policymakers and experts to share experiences, the continental gathering also catalyzed regional dialogue and partnership to accelerate efforts toward setting and reaching national benchmarks in the education field.

Interview: NATO is global driver of conflicts, U.S. activist says at pre-summit protest
THE HAGUE, June 22 (Xinhua) -- NATO has become a driver of global conflict rather than a force for peace, prioritizing military expansion at the expense of public welfare, a U.S. anti-war activist said here on Sunday during a protest ahead of the alliance's annual summit. "The wars are multiplying, the military spending is escalating, and NATO is instructing nation after nation to take money out of education, retirement, health care, and green energy, and put it into weapons and wars," said David Swanson, executive director of the non-profit group World Beyond War, in an interview with Xinhua. Swanson, who traveled from the United States to join the protest near the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, said NATO's presence in the city was "ironic," given what he described as the alliance's role in fueling conflicts around the globe. "NATO should have come to The Hague because the International Criminal Court is here, and its leaders should present themselves for prosecution. But it should not be here to organize the world for more wars and more military spending," he said. "NATO can be abolished and the world (would) be safer without it." The protest, attended by hundreds, took place two days before the NATO summit, where member states are expected to push for increased defense spending. While the demonstration was billed as opposing NATO and the war in Gaza, it also drew participants holding banners reading "No Iran War," following U.S. airstrikes on three of Iran's nuclear facilities a day earlier. Swanson said NATO's expansion since the Cold War, with 32 members currently, has only worsened global insecurity. "NATO is expanding globally and adding partners around the world, and has become the single biggest distributor of weapons, promoter of wars, and creator of military bases around the world," he said, adding that it certainly should have disbanded when the Cold War ended. He also criticized NATO member countries for following U.S. directives without regard for domestic public opinion or international law. "NATO countries are servants of the U.S. government, colonies of the U.S. government, and obedient to the U.S. government," Swanson said. "They need to start listening to the people of their countries, to international law, and to the United Nations."
