Former Disney channel star Bridgit Mendler raises $30 million for tech startup

Express Tribune25-04-2025

Bridgit Mendler, once known as the cheerful Teddy Duncan on Disney Channel's Good Luck Charlie, has taken a surprising and remarkable leap from television into the world of aerospace.
The 31-year-old actress-turned-entrepreneur is now the CEO and co-founder of Northwood Space, a startup aiming to overhaul the way satellite communications are built and accessed.
After earning a law degree from Harvard, Mendler stepped far beyond the entertainment sphere to launch Northwood Space, which is based in El Segundo, California.
The company's mission?
To construct a 'data highway between Earth and space,' as Mendler described it in a recent interview.
According to CNBC, the company has just raised $30 million in seed funding, backed by top venture capital firms including Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz.
Northwood Space's focus is revolutionary: mass production of satellite ground stations.
Traditionally, these stations—which are essential for relaying data between Earth and satellites—have been expensive, custom-built, and few in number.
Northwood Space intends to disrupt that model by creating standardised ground stations that can be mass-produced.
The aim is to bring scalable, affordable, and flexible space infrastructure to governments and businesses that manage satellite constellations.
Mendler explained the vision with clarity: they want to build 'factories for ground stations,' which would make this infrastructure more accessible to a wider range of users. The company's first ground station is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2024.
The recent $30 million funding round is a major step forward for Northwood. The capital will be used to grow the team, refine the startup's technologies, and begin production and deployment of their ground station networks.
The round was led by Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), with participation from Also Capital, BoxGroup, and Humba Ventures.
Despite Mendler's fame, insiders stress that the success of Northwood Space isn't just a product of celebrity spotlight.
Her leadership and deep technical interest are said to be driving the company's momentum in a competitive and highly technical field.
What might have looked like a novelty venture to some is now being recognised as a serious industry player.
Bridgit Mendler's story stands as a bold counter to conventional expectations around celebrities and their careers. It highlights how passion, education, and vision can open doors to new sectors—even space.
As Northwood Space continues to grow, its work could redefine the way satellite communications are built and operated, with Mendler at the helm of it all.

Situation at Iran's Bushehr nuclear plant is 'normal', Russian official says

By Gleb Bryanski ST PETERSBURG (Reuters) -Russian nuclear energy chief Alexei Likhachev said on Friday that the situation at Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, where hundreds of Russian specialists work, was "normal" and under control. The Israeli military said at one point on Thursday that it had struck the Russian-built Bushehr facility, but later said the comment had been made by mistake. Likhachev, head of the state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, said on Thursday that any attack on the plant could cause a Chernobyl-style nuclear disaster. Bushehr is Iran's only operating nuclear power plant and uses Russian fuel that Russia then takes back when it is spent to reduce proliferation risk. Asked on Friday about the situation at Bushehr, Likhachev told reporters: "So far the situation is completely under control, everything is normal. The night passed in the usual anxious but manageable atmosphere." He added: "We continue to work in pre-mobilization mode and very much hope that all our signals from yesterday reached the Israeli leadership." The "pre-mobilisation" comment appeared to refer to the possibility of evacuating staff in the event of an emergency. Russian President Vladimir Putin said this week that Russia has up to 600 staff at Bushehr, including 250 permanent workers and others on temporary assignment. He said Israel had issued a promise to Russia over their safety. Likhachev said on Thursday that some of those on assignment had been evacuated but the core staff remained for now. Russia, which has close ties with Iran, has warned strongly against U.S. military intervention on the side of Israel in the air war that began a week ago. Israel has stated that it launched strikes on Iran to prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Iran, which denies such an intention, has responded with drone and missile attacks on Israeli cities.

Watch: Winston Peters, Judith Collins speak on Israel-Iran conflict from RNZAF base

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters and Defence Minister Judith Collins are about to make an announcement regarding the Israel-Iran conflict from the Royal New Zealand Airforce Base in the Auckland suburb of Whenuapai at 3pm. The announcement that the ministers would speak on the conflict came before it was revealed the US performed military strikes against three Iranian nuclear sites, including uranium enrichment facility Fordow. Trump said on Truth Social: "We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American Warriors. There is not another military in the World that could have done this. NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE! Thank you for your attention to this matter." Peters has previously said the provocative behaviour by both Israel and Iran was to be criticised, and New Zealand did not take sides in a conflict of this nature. "There are no innocent parties in this conflict," he said. It was a tragedy that civilians were being killed, Peters said. "The people who are innocent ... that tragedy is just awful and I think New Zealanders understand that with clarity," Peters said. "That's why we try to help where we can, but we are a long way from this conflict." While Peters said we should avoid making judgement without all the information, he noted the conflict in the Middle East has been going on for years.
