Funding boost for community buildings across York and North Yorkshire
A funding boost has been announced to support community buildings across York and North Yorkshire.
The 2025/26 Community Building Programme will see £1.35 million spent on such spaces as village halls and cricket grounds, according to a spokesperson for York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.
The scheme is being delivered in partnership with North Yorkshire Council and City of York Council and is funded through the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF) and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said: "I want to make it easier for people to look after each other in their own communities, wherever they are in the region.
"This is particularly key in our rural areas.
"They are vast and beautiful, but often the people who live there feel more isolated than those who live in towns and cities.
"I have visited community buildings from Hawes to Whitby, and so many places in between.
"It might be a village hall, or a cricket ground, but it's the passion of the people who make these into more than places - into anchors for local life.
"That is why community buildings are essential to be able to create healthy, thriving, and connected communities right across the region."
Following on from previous UKSPF funding rounds that supported 43 village halls and community buildings, Mayor Skaith has committed £600,000 from his Mayoral Investment Fund to help more than 20 hubs.
Councillor Heather Phillips, North Yorkshire Council's executive member for stronger communities, said: "We are looking forward to working with our partners on the delivery of this programme.
"These buildings are incredibly important to local communities, particularly in rural areas where it may be the only meeting place for that village.
"They bring the community together, often by providing services and activities for all age groups."
Councillor Pete Kilbane, deputy leader of City of York Council, said: "Community venues like village halls are so much more than just buildings.
"They are places where people get to know each other, make new friends, host family celebrations, play sports, and access key services that enable people of all ages to lead happier, healthier lives.
"In short, they are the places where community is built."
David Burton, chair of Great Ouseburn Village Hall Management Committee, said: "I know how difficult it can be to help run a village hall, but I would encourage anyone in my position to keep an eye out for grants from the Combined Authority and apply where possible.
"This grant process has been extremely straightforward, and the changes made possible with this money have already made a huge impact on our community."
Funding applications will be open till August 4, and applications can be made at https://yorknorthyorks-ca.gov.uk/project/community-buildings-programme/

Potential record deal puts Elliott's name back in the headlines as Albion are linked
Harvey Elliott, pictured with Yasin Ayari, could be on the move (Image: Simon Dack) Harvey Elliott's name is being linked with Albion again – after Liverpool clinched a record deal. The champions' move for Florian Wirtz will set them back an initial £100 million. That will become a British record £116 million if various clauses are met. Advertisement It also appears to affect Elliott's potential to play significant minutes for the Reds. Albion were believed to be interested in Elliott during the January transfer window and probably before that. That might at least partly explain why The Sun report him to be of interest to the Seagulls in the current window. He would command a sizeable fee and comes with some uncertainty over what he can produce in the Premier League on a consistent basis. But Elliott, who is currently with England under-21s at the Euros, has shown plenty of promise. He scored for Liverpool at the Amex towards the end of the season. Advertisement There is no suggestion that Albion have bid for Elliott but there is a theory the presence of his former Anfield mentor James Milner could help persuade the 22-year-old to move. Albion have an array of options in attacking midfield areas but plenty of outward activity is expected during the summer transfer window.

Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab closes on $2B at $10B valuation
Thinking Machines Lab, the secretive AI startup founded by OpenAI's former chief technology officer Mira Murati, has closed a $2 billion seed round, according to The Financial Times. The deal values the six-month-old startup at $10 billion. The company's work remains unclear. The startup has leveraged Murati's reputation and other high-profile AI researchers who have joined the team to attract investors in what could be the largest seed round in history. According to sources familiar with the deal cited by the FT, Andreessen Horowitz led the round, with participation from Sarah Guo's Conviction Partners. Murati left OpenAI last September after leading the development of some of the company's most prominent AI products, including ChatGPT, DALL-E, and voice mode. Several of her former OpenAI colleagues have joined the new startup, including co-founder John Schulman. Murati is one of a handful of executives who left OpenAI after raising concerns about CEO Sam Altman's leadership in 2023. When the board ousted Altman in November of that year, Murati served as interim CEO before Altman was quickly reinstated. This story was originally published on Fashion Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Fashion Dive newsletter. Womenswear brand Dôen has closed a Series A funding round from growth equity firm Silas Capital, according to a news release this week. While financial terms of the funding round weren't disclosed, Dôen said that before this round, it had raised about $1 million in outside capital. The company's revenue is expected to reach $100 million this year. Dôen will use the new funding to expand retail operations and boost infrastructure in order to support its growing global customer base, per the release. Since Dôen's online launch in 2016, the company has expanded from women's dresses, tops and footwear into outerwear, denim, swimwear, tees, delicates and a home capsule, per the release. While the company already operates seven brick-and-mortar locations in California, New York and Massachusetts, Dôen said the funding will help expand its retail footprint into other key markets. The company also plans to boost operational infrastructure and invest in marketing. Margaret Kleveland, Dôen's co-founder and CEO, said in the release that the announcement had been 'a long time in the making' as the brand looked for a partner that aligned with its longterm vision for growth. Dôen launched wholesale through Net-A-Porter in 2019 and has had domestic partnerships with Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, per the release. Dôen's products are also placed in select international retailers and available at more than 150 specialty stores globally. Sales at Dôen's owned retail stores grew 80% year over year, with comp store sales up 46%, per the release. The New York store in particular saw sales grow 65%. Overall, the business grew 40% year over year in e-commerce, and wholesale bookings have risen 110% year to date. Dôen employs 160 people and is headquartered in Van Nuys, California. Collaborations have been a key part of Dôen's strategy, including its partnerships with brands like Reformation and K. Jacques. Dôen has also released two capsules with Gap. The Silas investment in Dôen follows previous investments in digitally native fashion brands including Naadam, Tracksmith and Summersalt. The firm has also invested in luxury fashion brand Proenza Schouler. Silas Capital's current investment portfolio includes beauty and wellness companies such as Violette_FR, Oak Essentials and Makeup by Mario. Last year, Silas Capital said it would focus on investing in consumer brands as part of its 'emerging growth' strategy. Sign in to access your portfolio
