Belgian Foreign Minister: What's Happening in Gaza Is a Humanitarian Catastrophe
DaysofPal – Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Hadja Lahbib, has described the situation in Gaza as a major humanitarian catastrophe, affirming that Belgium is stepping up its diplomatic pressure on Israel in light of escalating violations.
In comments made Sunday, Lahbib expressed grave concern:
'Even if I don't have the authority — or even if I did — to formally declare this a genocide, it is the responsibility of the international community to make that determination. But truly, what more do we need to witness? A humanitarian blockade, mass forced displacement, blatant violations of international law, and a clear intent to erase Gaza—what else must happen?'
He condemned the dehumanizing rhetoric used by some Israeli officials, saying, 'They speak of Palestinians as if they are not human beings.' He emphasized the urgent need for action, noting that 'the humanitarian dimension remains the most critical and pressing.'
Lahbib confirmed that Belgium has decided to escalate its diplomatic language in response to Israel's ongoing actions, which he stated 'violate international law and may constitute war crimes, as recognized by the International Criminal Court.'
Belgium is also evaluating the possibility of launching an air bridge for humanitarian aid to Gaza—similar to past operations. However, such efforts would require Israel's approval to access its airspace. Lahbib noted that Belgium is in talks with other European countries to increase pressure and secure land access for aid convoys.
'There are hundreds of trucks waiting at the borders daily, trying to reach starving civilians. What is happening is, in every sense, a scandal,' he concluded.

UN Official says Israel's Gaza aid system is a lethal trap for starving civilians
DaysofPal – The head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees has condemned the US-Israel-backed aid delivery system in Gaza as a 'lethal' and 'medieval' mechanism that is contributing to mass deaths among starving civilians in the besieged territory. Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, issued a scathing rebuke of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US- and Israel-endorsed aid coordination entity, accusing it of militarizing humanitarian relief and deliberately endangering lives. 'It is now the routine to shoot and kill desperate and starving people while they try to collect little food from a company made of mercenaries,' Lazzarini wrote in a post on X. 'A lame, medieval, and lethal system that is deliberately harming people under the camouflage of 'humanitarian aid' with lies, deceit, and cruelty. Inviting starving people to their death is a war crime. Those responsible for this system must be held accountable.' The remarks come amid growing international outcry over Israel's ongoing offensive in Gaza, which has left more than 55,630 people dead since October 7, 2023, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Thousands of those killed were reportedly seeking food or aid at GHF-run distribution sites. Mass killings at aid checkpoints According to UNRWA and media reports, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed at aid distribution points since the GHF launched operations three weeks ago. Gaza-based correspondents reported that at least 420 people were killed and more than 3,000 injured by Israeli fire near three aid sites in central and southern Gaza. 'You go there to get food, but you never know if you'll make it back,' one Palestinian told reporters, calling the sites 'execution grounds.' On Wednesday alone, at least 47 Palestinians were killed, including 14 aid workers, further underscoring the growing dangers of accessing life-saving assistance. Starvation as a Weapon of War Human rights groups and UN officials have accused Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war. Palestinians, including children, have died from malnutrition and dehydration, while Israeli forces have reportedly restricted humanitarian access and blocked essential supplies. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has denounced the repeated killing of civilians at aid sites, calling the pattern 'unacceptable' and demanding an independent investigation. 'The needs of the Palestinian people remain unmet,' said UN spokesperson Farhan Haq at a recent briefing. 'The Secretary-General continues to call for accountability and for Israel to uphold its obligations under international humanitarian law.' UNRWA has warned that Gaza's health system is on the verge of total collapse. Forty-five percent of essential medical supplies are out of stock, and the remaining inventory could be depleted within six weeks. Vital medicines and blood products are nearly exhausted, while fuel shortages have crippled hospitals, which depend entirely on generators to function. 'The amount of fuel in the hospitals is enough for three days only,' Gaza's Health Ministry said, blaming Israeli restrictions that prevent fuel delivery to areas designated as combat zones. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that for over 100 days, no fuel has entered Gaza, with Israeli forces denying access to fuel reserves in affected areas. 'This is pushing the health system closer to the brink of collapse,' Tedros stated. The recent blackout, according to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, was brought on by a fresh outage along one of the main routes, which was brought on by ongoing Israeli attacks on landline and internet infrastructure. 'There has been a new outage in the fiber optic line,' said Laith Daraghmeh, executive director of Gaza's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. 'As a result, there are currently no communications services in southern and central Gaza.' The Government Media Office condemned the blackout, calling it 'a crime aimed at obscuring the truth and deepening the humanitarian catastrophe.' 'The widespread and recurring interruption of communications and the internet cannot be considered a technical or accidental failure,' it said. 'Rather, it is a deliberate and premeditated crime aimed at isolating the Gaza Strip from the outside world, obscuring the truth, and depriving citizens of the most basic necessities of life, safety, communication, and assistance.' In his remarks, Lazzarini called for the immediate reinstatement of humanitarian principles and unimpeded access for aid workers and specialists. 'Humanitarian principles must be reinstated. Experts must be allowed into Gaza to provide assistance,' he urged. Shortlink for this post:

Israel Shuts Down Al-Aqsa Mosque for Second Friday
DaysofPal — For the second week in a row, Israeli occupation forces closed all gates to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem on Friday, barring Palestinian worshippers from entering for Friday prayers, according to a statement from the Jerusalem Governorate. Israeli occupation authorities shut all entrances to the mosque compound, including Bab Hutta and Bab al-Silsila, after allowing only a limited number of worshipers through under the pretext that the allowed capacity had been reached. The Jerusalem Governorate reported that Israeli forces also stopped worshipers at Bab al-Sahira and obstructed access to the Old City and the mosque ahead of Friday prayers. Despite the restrictions, Palestinian activists and religious leaders issued urgent calls to residents of Jerusalem and Palestinians in 1948-occupied territories to mobilize and flock to the mosque, especially after the compound was reopened on Wednesday following a six-day closure. The calls emphasized the importance of mass attendance and participation in prayer at the mosque, rejecting Israel's restrictive 'quota' policy, which reportedly limits attendance to 400–500 individuals. Activists described the current moment as critical, urging people to resist ongoing Israeli attempts to isolate Al-Aqsa from its surrounding community. 'Being present at Al-Aqsa right now is a form of popular resistance,' said one Jerusalemite activist. 'It's a clear message that this holy site is a red line that must not be crossed, regardless of political or military circumstances.' Last Friday, Israeli authorities completely sealed off Al-Aqsa under the pretext of a 'state of emergency' following the start of Israel's military operation against Iran. Although the mosque was reopened on Wednesday with limited access for some worshipers, dozens of Israeli settlers stormed the compound through the Moroccan Gate the following day under heavy police protection. On World Refugee Day: Hamas Says No Solution to Refugees Except Ending Occupation
DayofPal– The Hamas Movement affirmed that the global celebration of World Refugee Day, amid the ongoing war of extermination and starvation in Gaza, places the international community before political, legal, humanitarian, and moral responsibilities to put an end to the Israeli crimes. In a press statement issued on Friday, Hamas stated that this year's World Refugee Day comes at a time when the Israeli Zionist occupation is escalating its war of extermination and starvation against the people in Gaza, committing daily massacres and crimes against the displaced and starving refugees. Hamas added: 'The terrorist occupation government has turned relief operations for the starving into death traps and ambushes, where our Palestinian people are killed at the gates of the criminal American-Zionist-controlled checkpoints distributing humanitarian aid—in the most horrific forms of bloody revenge killings and violations of all international laws, norms, and humanitarian values.' The movement pointed out that the continued aggressive war by the Israeli occupation against refugee camps in the occupied West Bank, through systematic destruction and displacement, is a dangerous escalation in targeting the refugee issue. 'it's only an attempt to erase its features, as a prelude to liquidating our national cause. However, our people will not allow this and will stand as a formidable barrier against it,' it added. Hamas affirmed that the right of return for refugees to the homes they were displaced from by the Israeli occupation is an individual and collective right, recognized by international laws, charters, and UN resolutions. No one has the authority to relinquish, compromise, negotiate away, or abandon this right. The movement reiterated its rejection of all solutions aiming to erase the refugee issue or end the right of return. It also categorically rejected all Israeli attempts, supported by the U.S. administration, to abolish, obscure, or eliminate the role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), or to transfer its mandate to any other entity, especially in the distribution of aid and relief. Hamas emphasized the necessity for the agency, as a UN institution, to fully uphold its responsibilities in distributing aid, serving refugees, and providing them with necessary services. The movement reaffirmed that the Israeli Zionist occupation of Palestine land and its perpetration of crimes of displacement, discrimination, and apartheid against the people for over seven decades is the root cause of the ongoing tragedy and suffering of millions of Palestinian refugees, both inside and in the diaspora.
